Ludhiana, December 14

The police recovered 2.7 kg of opium from four drug peddlers in the city. In the first case, the Division No 4 Police arrested two drug peddlers at the Gol Market near Damoria Bridge with 1.7 kg of opium. The accused have been identified as Rajesh Kumar Gupta, a native of Baksar district of Bihar and a resident of Daba, and Murli Naarad Mal, a resident of Mahapur village of Kerala.

According to information, Davinder Singh, SHO, Police Station Division Number 4, was present at a checkpoint near the Gol Market when both drug peddlers were heading toward the Old City Area. The police stopped them at the checkpoint. During search, the police recovered 1.7 kg of opium from their possession.

Davinder Singh said a case of drug peddling was already registered against Rajesh at the Pataran police station, Patiala, after the recovery of 3 kg of opium from his custody.

On a tip-off from Rajesh Kumar Gupta, staff from the Police Station Division No 4 arrested another drug peddler from Chander Nagar. The accused has been identified as Balwainder Singh, a resident of Kalwane village, Patiala district. The police recovered 500 grams of opium from his possession.

During investigation, the police found that Rajesh Kumar Gupta used to smuggle opium from Nagaland and supply to Balwainder Singh and some other peddlers in Punjab.

A police team led by sub-inspector Balwinder Singh laid a checkpoint near Sandhu Electronics at Hargobind Nagar. The police spotted a person talking on cellphone while driving motorcycle. The police stopped the youth and searched him. During the search, the police recovered 500 grams of opium from his possession. The accused has been identified as Sunny Singh, a resident of Dudar village, Patiala.

Davinder Singh, SHO, Police Station Division Number 4, said: “We have been investigation the cases thoroughly. We hope that the accused will disclose more links during the investigation.”
