New Delhi, December 20

Union Urban Development Minister M. Vekaiah Naidu said installing LED streetlights is a good initiative to reduce electricity consumption in the city. It will help in improving the financial health of the municipal corporations in the capital.

He said there are an estimated five lakh streetlights in Delhi owned by the state government agencies.

All these are conventional streetlights and consume more energy every year. In addition to consuming high levels of energy, these streetlights require substantial annual maintenance cost.

The Union Minister said such streetlight consumes almost 50 per cent less energy as compared to the conventional streetlight and they also have a very long life which reduces maintenance cost considerably.
