The Sector 34 police station has topped the chart of vehicle theft cases reported in the city with a total 152 cases reported out of which 129 remains untraced.

The plus point this year was that the number of thefts was lesser as compared to 2013 i.e total 176 cases were reported out of which 153 were untraced previous year.

The Sector 39 police station follows the chart with 93 vehicle thefts reported out of which the police has failed to trace 64 cases.

Meanwhile, third in the queue stands Sector 36 police station with 84 vehicles stolen from the jurisdiction of the police station out of which the police has failed to recover 65 vehicles.

UT SSP Sukhchain Singh Gill said the vehicle thefts were one area where they were concentrating. “We are soon going to analyse the statistics of the vehicle thefts in the beginning of 2015 and based on the study a strategy will be chalked out,” the SSP added.

However, the overall statistics of the vehicle thefts reported during 2014 shows a dip as compared to 2013. While total 900 cases of vehicle thefts were reported from the city only 238 were traced in 2013, the number of cases reported this year till December 18 are 785 out of which 218 have been traced.

The Mani Majra police station has succeeded in controlling the vehicle theft cases with only 71 cases reported this year as compared to last year when 153 cases were reported.

Similarly, the number of vehicle theft cases in Sector 17 police station has also come down to 82 cases reported this year as compared to 116 reported last year.

The SSP said the Station House Officers (SHO) would be asked to identify the areas where more theft incidents were reported and to intensify the patrolling in those areas.
