The Army gunned down two militants belonging to United A’chik Liberation Army (UALA), a Meghalaya-based terrorist group, in an encounter that took place in the wee hours of Thursday near village Kongkhal, in western Assam’s Goalpara district, close to Assam-Meghalaya border. Two 7.65 mm pistols, two hand grenades, large amount of ammunition and other war-like stores were recovered during the operation. TNS

Sonia Gandhi hospitalised
Congress president Sonia Gandhi was on Thursday admitted to a hospital for an infection in the lower respiratory tract. Her condition was stable, a hospital official said. "Sonia Gandhi was admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital around 8.30 pm. Her condition is stable and she is under observation," sources said. ians

R-Day: Security stepped up
The Mumbai police have asked schools in the city and managements of malls and multiplexes to beef up security after intelligence agencies warned of terror attacks ahead of Republic Day celebrations. Police officers visited the managements of some schools in South Mumbai, Bandra-Kurla and other places and reviewed security arrangements. Officials said they had been warned of a 26/11-type terror attacks targeting schools and shopping malls.

Directive to tea estates
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has directed the tea estates (TEs) in the state to implement all clauses of the Plantation Labour Act (PLA), 1951, within six months to improve working and living condition of tea workers and warned of punitive measures against tea gardens for failure to comply with the directive. Gogoi also directed the planters to revise the wages of tea workers as per the Minimum Wages Act. TNS
