Chandigarh, December 21

The 24-year-old girl, who underwent pancreas transplant at the PGIMER five days ago, the first such surgery to be conducted at the institute, developed severe infection today. Family members indicated that the implanted pancreas did not suit her.

After regaining consciousness, last week, she is again confined to bed now. Her brother Ramesh said, “We have been told that the pancreas have to be removed due to infection. Now, she will remain hospitalised atleast for two months.”

The PGIMER conducted the first pancreas transplant on December 8 after the family of a 45-year-old brain dead patient gave its consent for donating his organs.

Her family had been keeping their fingers crossed as the results of the transplant is only known only after two weeks of the operation. After struggling to keep her stable with medication and procedures for the past 18 years, the family decided to take the risk and agreed for transplant. The family hails from Solan.
