Two men have been apprehended for allegedly supplying pseudoephedrine which is used to make party drugs in Ghaziabad and Delhi, police said today.
Pseudoephedrine is used to legitimately manufacture anti-cold and anti-allergy medicines and can also be used to illegally produce synthetic drugs such as Amphetamine Type Stimulants (ATS). The ATS is a 'party drug' that induces euphoria and hallucinations and is sold by common names like Speed and Meth.
The Delhi Police Crime Branch arrested Ramveer (39) and Amit Kumar (35), both are residents of Ghaziabad.
The police said they seized 14 kilograms of pseudoephedrine worth Rs 70 lakh allegedly from the accused.
On November 22, the Crime Branch was tipped off that Ramveer and his brother-in-law, Amit Kumar, are allegedly engaged in supplying pseudoephedrine in Ghaziabad and Delhi.
The police were informed that the accused would come with a consignment of pseudoephedrine near a bus stand under the Geeta Colony flyover in east Delhi between 4.30 pm and 5.30 pm on the same day.
"At about 4:40 pm, a white Maruti SX4 bearing a Uttar Pradesh registration number plate arrived there from the Jamuna Bazar side.
“The car driver was identified as Ramvir who started waiting near the bus stand. After about 10 minutes, a Mahindra XUV vehicle bearing a UP registration number plate also arrived there and its driver was identified as Amit Kumar.
“The driver of Mahindra XUV got down with a bag and handed it over to Ramvir who checked the bag. After waiting for about 10 minutes, the two men proceeded to return but were apprehended by the police party," said Ravindra Yadav, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime).
Fourteen kilograms of micro-crystal pseudoephedrine was found in the bag, according to Yadav.
"During their interrogation, the accused revealed that they had come near the Geeta Colony bus stand to deliver pseudoephedrine to one of their contacts but were caught.
They said that they had come in contact with one Mayank Aggarwal and started purchasing the drug from him.
Aggarwal and his wife were arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau and a huge quantity of pseudoephedrine and other drugs were recovered from him," said Yadav.
