After SC rebuke, 8 cases registered in Faridkot

The Faridkot police today registered eight kidnapping cases after it was pulled up by the Supreme Court for its inaction on missing children.

These cases are related to children who went missing in the last 23 months in Faridkot district and the police being hesitant about lodging FIRs. Demanding justice for these missing children, various social orgasnisations have been staging a dharna in front of Faridkot police station since May 25.

While hearing a public writ petition filed by Nobel Peace Prize winner Kailash Satyarthi, the Supreme Court had recently taken exception to the “apathy” of the police and directed the state chief secretary and the Director General of Police to appear before it for their failure to register such cases.

Following the apex court orders, VK Bhawra, director, Bureau of Investigation, Punjab, wrote a letter to the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Faridkot, on December 16, directing him to register FIRs in all missing children cases.

Among these children are Mohan Jeet Singh (10), missing since December 22, 2013; Badal (16), missing since October 3, 2013; Mangal Singh (17), missing since May 25, 2013; Gurdeep Singh (16), missing since February 24, 2013; Mohinder Kumar (17), missing since June 4, 2014; Ganga (14), missing since June 16, 2014; Amandeep Singh (16), missing since September 12, 2014; and Karamjit Kaur (16), missing since June 2014.

In his letter to the SSP, VK Bhawra wrote that in the missing children cases, instead of registering FIRs, only DDR entries had been made earlier.

“Though 45 children (25 in 2013 and 24 in 2014 till November 30) were reported missing in Faridkot district, only 28 FIRS were registered (16 FIRs in 2013 and 12 in 2014). Out of these 45 missing children, 28 were recovered,” reads the letter.
