Hisar, December 19

Shopkeepers in the market situated along the Flamingo Tourist Complex kept their shutters down today in protest against an eviction notice served on eight shops here.

The shops in the market are owned by the Haryana Tourism Corporation (HTC) and were rented out about 30 years ago.

A team of the administration and police arrived in the market today to seal the shops, but they faced opposition from shopkeepers and had to return without sealing the shops.

The shopkeepers claim-ed they had paid the rent regularly till 2010, but the corporation refused to accept the rent after that. “We have been sending cheques as per the norms but the officials stopped accepting the rent after 2010. These shops are our only source of livelihood,” they said.

A delegation of shopkeepers also met state BJP president Subhash Barala today, who assured them that their issue would be taken up with authorities.
