Two persons were injured in a shootout in front of the district court complex here today. The victims have been identified as Sharanjit Singh alias Shanna of Diamond Avenue on the Majitha road and Moris of Navi Abadi area.
They were standing across the Patwarkhana when two car-borne assailants opened fire at them.
They were rushed to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital. Sources said Sharanjit sustained two bullet injuries on his chest and waist while a bullet pierced through the leg of Moris. Doctors attending to them said while Moris was out of danger, Sharanjit’s condition was critical.
The incident led to panic in the area. Senior police officers visited the spot.
Gaurav, who is known to the victims, had a narrow escape. He alleged Surinder of Navi Abadi and Karan of Mahal village had fired at them due to group rivalry.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Balkar Singh said a case of attempt to murder was registered against them and further investigations were in progress.
He said the shootout could be the result of an altercation between two groups last night. Raids were on to nab the culprits, he added.
Earlier on Saturday, members of the two groups had clashed with each other wherein Vishal Sharma alias Bhuri was injured. He is an accomplice of Shanna and Moris.
Bhuri said he was returning home from Rambagh area when Karan, Surinder, Kabir and some unidentified persons attacked him with sharp weapons. He is under treatment at the hospital. His mother Kanta Sharma alleged Karan and Surinder came to the hospital this morning and threatened to eliminate Vishal and his accomplices. She said she had informed the police about the incident.
Kabir refuted the allegations. He alleged Vishal and his accomplices had attacked him and his friend Ganga with sharp weapons.
