 Double delight

It was double delight for India as Srikanth and Saina triumphed in China’s den. Shuttler Kidambi Srikanth, ranked 15th in the world, not only pulled off the biggest upset of his career by beating two-time Olympic and five-time men’s singles world champion Lin Dan in straight games to secure his maiden Super Series title, but also created history. He is the first Indian male shuttler to win a Super Series Premier event. On the other side, in her sixth appearance in the prestigious tournament, world number five Saina Nehwal beat Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi in straight games to win her maiden China Open Super Series. After a barren 2013, this is Saina's third title of the year as she had won the Australian Super Series and the Syed Modi International Grand Prix Gold earlier. Keep it up!

Gambling game

Apropos the editorial “BCCI's Srinivasan must go” (November 17), he should go not only from the BCCI, but also go from the ICC. The Supreme Court disclosing the names of Srinivasan, his son-in-law Gurunath and others (except players) in the 2013 IPL spot-fixing scandal marks a black day in Indian cricket. Cricket was considered to be gentlemen’s sport. But incidents of betting and spot-fixing have tarnished its fair name. It has become a gambling game. 

In spite of the initial adverse report of Justice Mudgal, CSK owner Srinivasan had not bothered to quit till the SC order to keep off. They should have tendered their resignations when they were named in the Mudgal preliminary report recently. But the arrogant Srinivasan kept manipulating the board members by his clout.

The officials and players connected with cricket are financially very well  placed. They are, rather, overpaid and one cannot understand why they should indulge in illegal activities to make more money.

Cleanse BCCI, PM

Apropos the editorial “BCCI's Srinivasan should go” (November 17), the BCCI seems to be a political den, with people from most parties in its panel. Leaders who fight inside Parliament and on TV channel debates behave like brothers when it comes to the BCCI. The real reason seems to be the cash the game of cricket is generating and so nobody bothers about the way it comes. The PM should launch a ‘swachh BCCI mission’. But that would be successful only if people from his party (BJP) who are in the BCCI resign and lead by example.

Circle kabaddi 

Deputy CM Sukhbir Badal deserves praise for promoting circle kabaddi and making it a world famous sport. Old and retired players have got a chance to serve. Good coaches are now in demand as experienced hands are needed to organise the games. People watched World Kabaddi League matches with interest. Many Bollywood personalities have formed their own teams. However, a good player feels frustrated at the time of a controversial foul, specially that regarding pulling of the shirt. This rule should be amended. Let the players wear strong underwear and play on mats. No shirt-pulling fouls, then!

Hockey win

Our hockey team has once again proved its mettle by defeating Australia by three matches to one. The team has brought back India’s name on the map of hockey. Credit goes to the captain, Sardar Singh, and his players. The hard work put in by the coach Walsh is praiseworthy. The government must award all team members. Best wishes for the coming Olympics.

Building chaos

Apropos the editorial 'Building chaos' (November 10), the NGO 'Society for Preservation of Kasauli & its Environs' (SPOKE) has been taking up the issue of unscientific constructions going on in Kasauli hills with successive CMs. When no action was forthcoming, SPOKE filed two PILs in 1993 & 2005 against the Government of HP and the builders. As a result, a stay was imposed by the HP High Court and the government was directed to formulate control measures to arrest these haphazard constructions. These were formulated and notified the HP Govt Gazette in 2008 in the form of 'Revised Development Plan for Kasauli Planning Area-2021'. These have , however, been only on paper and even after six years these control measures have been implemented only in their gross violation and the unscientific constructions are going on as before with impunity. It seems that the Govt has not learnt any lesson from the recent devastations. Failing the faithful implementation of these control measures we should be prepared to witness repeat of the devastations of 2012 and 2014 in Uttrakhand, north Himachal Pradesh and J & K in the event of floods or Earthquake.

Fine for littering

With reference to the article "Making 'Swachh Bharat' a success" (November 11), India can become a clean country only if the government imposes penalties on people who litter public places. There should be dustbins every 200 m at public places. Spreading awareness is a pre-requisite.

Matrimonial service

The Tribune is doing excellent service through its matrimonial advertisement column. My marriage was fixed through the paper in 1978. My daughter’s wedding too was solemnised the same way last year. Now, my son is due to be married in December, thanks to the column. Carry on.

Exempt from tax

The animation movie ‘Chaar Sahibzaade’ is a religious and historical film. It portrays the story of the sacrifice of Guru Gobind Singh’s four sons. Since it provides good moral education to society, the film should be exempt from tax in Punjab just as in some other states. Many more people would then be able to afford to watch this movie and become aware of our history and derive the benefit of the Guru’s teachings.
