“Secmol – the school for Norphel”, a film made by the Education Multimedia and Research Centre (EMMRC), University of Kashmir, has won the best film award in the second edition of Woodpecker Film Festival and Forum.

The festival was held at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi, from December 11 to 13. The award carries citation, trophy and a cash prize. Of the 100 entries received from across the country, 64 were shortlisted and screened during the three-day film festival.

“SECMOL” was declared the best film in the education category.

Produced and directed by Shahid Rasool and Shafqat Habib, the film was shot at Ladakh. It revolves around a Nobra boy, Norphel, who had failed in Class X. Norphel’s story is that of courage and the right environment provided by his school, which only enrols Class X failures.

The documentary film demonstrates how the country’s education system fails even the brightest and calls for re-look on the curriculum, the course material and the techniques of teaching and learning.

At Norphel’s school, stress is more on learning then on scoring marks.

The award was received by Shahid Rasool and Shafqat Habib during a award ceremony at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi, on Saturday.

Congratulating team EMMRC, KU Vice Chancellor Khurshid Iqbal Andrabi termed it as a moment of pride for all at KU.

Dean, Academic Affairs, MA Wani and Registrar, KU, Zaffar A Reshi congratulated EMMRC for bringing laurels to the institution.

The EMMRC has produced over 1,000 ETV programmes and documentaries during the past two decades and has won nine national-level awards. Film “Global warming - the catastrophe in making” produced and directed by Shahid and Shafqat had won the best film award in 2010.
