Athletes of Malwa College bring laurels

BATHINDA: The athletics team of Malwa College of Physical Education, Bathinda, comprising of 36 athletes, emerged as the over-all champion in the men’s category by winning 8 gold, 7 silver and 3 bronze medals in the 52nd Inter-College Athletics Championship held at Punjabi University, Patiala, from December 16 to 18, 2014.

The athletics team of Malwa College of Physical Education, Bathinda, comprising of 36 athletes, emerged as the over-all champion in the men’s category by winning 8 gold, 7 silver and 3 bronze medals in the 52nd Inter-College Athletics Championship held at Punjabi University, Patiala, from December 16 to 18, 2014.

Athletes of the team established six new records in different athletics disciplines. In Javelin throw, Bhupinder Singh created a new record by throwing 69.71 mt; in triple jump, Navjot Singh jumped 15.29 mt to create a new record.

Ajay Kumar jumped 2.06 mt and set a new record in high jump. Jashanjot Singh created a new record in 110 mt. KM Ranchna established a new record in hammer throwing with 60.26 mt.

The college management, director, staff and students hailed the victory. The management announced a cash award of Rs 11,000 to each athlete who won a medal.

All women participants of the college bagged gold medals in their respective events. KM Ranchna (hammer throw), Sharanjit Kaur 800 mt and 1,500 mt (gold), Ritu Dinkar 5000 mt (gold), Manju Yadav 10,000 mt (gold) and 4x100 mt relay (gold).

President of District Athletics Association, KPS Brar, while congratulating the college team hoped that these athletes would repeat their medal winning performance at the All-India Inter–University meet to be held in Bangalore (Karnataka) next month. — TNS
