Punjab co-operative societies and the war

THE excellent work done by the Jullundur Co-operative Societies in supplying warm socks, caps, mitten, gloves, etc.

THE excellent work done by the Jullundur Co-operative Societies in supplying warm socks, caps, mitten, gloves, etc., to the Indian troops at the front is described by Colonel Clark, I.M.S., Sub-Assistant Surgeon Mahomed Azim Khan and Mr. Abdul Majid Khan, Assistant Registrar of the Co-operative Societies. The total subscriptions received up to 30th November amounted to only Rs. 1860.12.3; but the Jullundur Sock League has been able to provide from this meagre amount 2,506 pairs of woollen socks and 47 pairs of Balaclava caps and a few other articles. It is explained that each 100 lbs. of yarn costing Rs. 200 give 40 dozen pairs of socks and that the socks are turned out by machinists at 12 or 13 annas a dozen pairs. This brings the cost per pair to about 7 ½ annas as compared with 10 annas which is the market price for the same quality. We are pleased to note that the Jullundur Kanya Mahavidyalya has enthusiastically co-operated with the League in this matter.

Improvement of libraries in the Punjab

THE Punjab University has taken in hand the question of improving its own Library. For this purpose the Syndicate, apparently with the sanction of the Senate, has assigned a sum of £1,000. It proposes to meet the pay and travelling expenses for a period of about 12 months of an expert University Librarian. It is a temporary arrangement, the object being, to benefit not only the University Library, but the College Libraries as well, from the experience of an expert in the introduction of improvements desirable and necessary, in equipment, control and general working and generally in regard to the adoption of a policy which is advantageous to each one of the separate institutions.
