Patiala, December 18
The Central Government will grant Rs 60 crore to Government Medical College, Patiala, which seeks to upgrade its infrastructure. The college authorities had sought the assistance in light of the fact that the government had approved additional 50 postgraduate (PG) seats in the college this year. The total number of PG seats in the college has risen from 150 to 200.
This grant will be issued under the government’s scheme to upgrade the medical college. Officials of the Health Department said Rs 50 crore would be spent on building a 500-seat lecture hall, five 250-seat lecture halls, six central research laboratories, a library and a demonstration room. A part of this amount will also be spent on the maintenance of the existing hostels. Besides, Rs 10 crore will be spent on upgrading equipment in the medical college and hospital.
One of the senior officials said Rs 1.2 crore would be sanctioned for each student, thus taking the total amount to Rs 60 crore for 50 students.
“While the Central Government will sanction 70 per cent of the grant (Rs 42 crore), the remaining 30 per cent (Rs 18 crore) will be released by the state government,” he added.
College principal Dr KD Singh said they were awaiting a communique in this regard.
