The troubles of Italy

THE Egyptian correspondent of the Pioneer in his letter this week gives an additional reason why Italy, to protect her own interests, should join the Entente Powers.

THE Egyptian correspondent of the Pioneer in his letter this week gives an additional reason why Italy, to protect her own interests, should join the Entente Powers. He points out that the position in Tripoli is endangered and that German officers are at Senussi camp trying their utmost to get the sect to declare a jehad against Great Britain and march against Egypt. But the Grand Sheikh of the Senussi has issued a proclamation enjoining his followers and the affiliated tribes to maintain a calm and peaceful attitude. So far the Mahomedans of North Africa have not given trouble and they apparently do not feel justified to give way to religious frenzy where religion is not menaced. Italy knows this point just as well as the British and consequently she will not in anticipation of danger plunge into war which might just as well hasten it. Italy is apparently well aware that the Entente Powers are bound to come out victorious without her own help and her best interests require to be watchful and yet fully prepared for eventualities.

The fighting strength of the allies

IT is not perhaps generally known that the French have not been able to call out the full strength of their fighting forces. The British army is yet to be strengthened by those who are under training. A London correspondent points out that the French reserves have not been fully called up because they cannot be equipped. "There was, and still is, a deficiency of rifles, bayonets, transport, boots, belts, clothing, and stores of all kinds. The defects are being made good; but the process takes time, and we have to help the French as much as we can, as well as to supply ourselves. "
