Chairman of the moderate faction of the Hurriyat Conference and head of the Muttahida Majlis-e-Ulema, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, today expressed concern over the increase in social crimes, saying that urgent steps were required to counter “negative influences” in society.
Mirwaiz, while referring to the rape and murder of a woman in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district, said: “The incident is not only brutal in nature, but as a society it is a collective shame for us.”
The separatist leader, in a statement, demanded “stern punishment” for the culprits involved in the incident.
Referring to the recent acid attack on a law student in the city, Mirwaiz said: “It is a reason of shame that the culprits are still untraced.”
“There is a need of massive social reform movement in society,” he added.
Mirwaiz said the violence against women has become a routine in Kashmir and termed it “highly unfortunate”. He demanded immediate arrest of culprits involved in the acid attack and also demanded stern punishment for the culprits in rape and murder of Pulwama woman.
