Ripudaman Singh Malik, who was the main accused in the 1985 Air India Kanishka bombing and later acquitted, was shot dead outside his business office in Surrey near Vancouver today.

  • 329 people were killed in the explosion of the Air India Flight 182 Kanishka on June 23, 1985 near the Irish coastline. The flight was operating on Montreal-London-Delhi-Mumbai route.
  • Ripudaman Singh Malik was among the main suspects to have been a part of the bombing. He allegedly funded the act.
  • Malik was acquitted of the charges of his involvement in the bombing in 2005. Another accused, Ajaib Singh Bagri, was also acquitted.
  • The only person convicted was Inderjit Singh Reyat, a dual British-Canadian national, who was a member of the International Sikh Youth Federation.
  • Malik visited India in December 2019 after his name was removed from the blacklist of 312 Sikhs living abroad in September 2019. 
  • Malik praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi to declare December 26 as Veer Baal Divas marking the martyrdom of the sons of Guru Gobind Singh in a letter written on January 17, earlier this year.
