Robinson starts China visit
BEIJING, Sept 6 (PTI) — United Nations Human Rights High Commissioner Mary Robinson started her trip to China today amid allegations that Beijing had been suppressing religious freedom and was responsible for widespread rights abuses in Tibet. During her 10-day visit, the first by a UN Rights High Commissioner to China, Ms Robinson is expected to discuss with officials a broad range of human rights issues, including China’s ratification of international human rights instruments.
CM denies threat
IMPHAL, Sept 6 (PTI) — Manipur Chief Minister Wahengbam Nipamacha Singh today accused the Congress of trying to engineer a split in the nine-month-old, four-party United Front Manipur (UFM) ministry, but said it was not under threat. Mr Nipamacha Singh told a press conference, at which 32 of the 44 ruling coalition legislators were present, there was also no question of changing the leadership of the UFM ministry which was running "smoothly".

Black box located
GENEVA, Sept 6 (AFP) — The "black box" flight recorder of doomed Swissair flight 111 which crashed off the Canadian-Atlantic coast, killing all 229 persons on board, could be recovered later today, Swissair said. The box has been located at a depth of 60 metres in the Atlantic Ocean, Sair group president Philippe Bruggisser said. A submarine located the beacon that the black box emitted yesterday. The box should contain flight data and conversations in the cockpit in the run-up to the tragedy on Wednesday.
Flood toll 640
DHAKA, Sept 6 (Reuters) — Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today urged members of her Cabinet to rush to the country’s villages to supervise relief and rescue operations as the worst in its history intensified. Triggered by heavy rain and fed by swollen rivers flowing from the Himalayan mountains, the floods have killed nearly 640 persons, disaster management officials said. Officials said Bangladesh’s longest floods, which started two months ago, had left millions homeless or marooned over three-quarters of the country.
3 cops injured
GWALIOR, Sept 6 (PTI) — Three policemen have been injured after a mob attacked a police station at Pichchore in Gwalior district following the discovery of the body of a man allegedly killed in police custody. According to the police, trouble broke out after some villagers identified a body recovered by the police from a field near Chatarpur yesterday as that of Sobran Baghel, brother-in-law of dacoit Raghuvir Gardia. The villagers alleged Baghel, who had been brought from his village Chatarpur for interrogation in connection with the whereabouts of Gardia, had died following police torture.
Mobile hospital
MUMBAI, Sept 6 (PTI) — US-based Nargis Dutt Foundation is all set to introduce India’s first mobile cancer hospital and bone marrow transplant unit in Mumbai and New Delhi respectively, by the year end. Custom-built by Siemens India at a projected cost of $ 2,50,000, the mobile hospital would cater to half of the city’s population which lives in Mumbai slums, Mr Sunil Dutt, the trustee of the foundation, told PTI here today. Doctors will also be able to perform minor out-patient surgeries in the hospital, he said.
1 killed in clash
VIRUDHUNAGAR, Sept 6 (PTI) — One person was killed and at least 10 injured during clashes between volunteers of the Puthiya Tamzihagam, a party floated by Dr Krishnasamy, and residents of some villages near Sattur in Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu late last night, the police said today. The victim was sleeping in a match factory godown which, along with some shops, was set on fire during the clash, the police said.
