AMRITSAR
Nominated: Dr Manmohar Singh, professor of orthopaedics, Government Medical College here, has been nominated Man of the Year 1998 by the American Biographical Institute (ABI) in view of his overall accomplishment and contribution to society, according to a press note here on Wednesday.


GURDASPUR
Water borne diseases: The district Health Department launched a special drive to create awareness about water-borne diseases among people. A meeting of sarpanches, panches and staff of the district Health Department was held at Dunera on Thursday. Dr Ajaib Singh Sandhu, Civil Surgeon, said that all water hydrants should have a cemented base.

MOGA
Resentment: Resentment prevails among residents of Bhekha village over the government's failure to build a 5 km stretch of link road linking the village with the main road for the past several years. Mr Pyara Singh, resident of Bhekha village, told mediapersons on Wednesday here although the state government had given approval for construction of the stretch in 1983 nothing had been done so far in this connection.

Appointed: Mr Jasbir Malour has been appointed president of the youth wing of the district unit of the Haryana Lok Dal (Rashtriya) by the party president, Mr Om Prakash Chautala.

FATEHABAD

Mutation adalat: Mr Phateh Singh Dagar, SDM, has said the district administration will organise a "mutation adalat" at Bhattu Kalan in this district on Friday. Senior officers of various departments would be present to redress grievances. Mr Dagar said panches and sarpanches of the area had been invited to the adalat. He appealed to the people to take part in the adalat in a large number.
Plantation drive: The district administration has formulated a plan for plantation of 5.09 lakh saplings on 425 hectare of land in the district. According to the Deputy Commissioner, Mr P.C. Bidhan, the administration will ensure the participation of school children, farmers and government institutions in the programme. He said the district administration will celebrate vanamahotsava in the second week of this month. Painting and essay writing competitions for school children will be organised on the occasion.

REWARI
Drug de-addiction centre: According to the Deputy Commissioner, 410 drug addicts got themselves registered for treatment at the local Drug Awareness Counselling and Assistance Centre during the past one year. Out of them 183 patients have recovered fully.Twentynine other addicts have been referred for treatment to the de-addiction centres at Gurgaon and Rohtak.

ROHTAK
Car taken away: Two armed youths allegedly took away a car from its owner near Kalanaur, about 20 km from here, on Tuesday. The complainant has identified the youths as Pawan and Rajesh. In another case, a Maruti car was stolen from the local Mahajan Mohalla on Tuesday while it was parked in a lane.

SIRSA
Patrakar sangh: A two-day state-level sammelan of the Haryana Patrakar Sangh, will be held from August 21. In a joint statement Mr Surinder Bhatia and Mr I. Mehta, the vice-president and joint secretary, respectively, of the sangh,  said on Thursday that former Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar and former Chief Minister Om Parkash Chautala would also participate.
Road mishap: Two persons were killed on the spot and 10 injured in a road accident near Ding Maur about 22 km from here on Wednesday. A tractor-trailer carrying 17 persons of a family was on its way to Mochiwali village when it overturned as the driver lost balance while trying to overtake a car. The deceased were indentified as Bakhtawari Devi (60) and Girdhawari Devi (32). All injured, including a child, were hospitalised and stated to be out of danger.

SONEPAT
Arrested: The Ganaur police has arrested two persons in connection with the theft of a tractor near Larsauli village on July 4. The Superintendent on Police, Mr K. Selvraj, told mediapersons here on Thursday that the arrested persons included, Pargat alias Pradeep of Hawri village in Kurukshetra district. The arrests followed an FIR lodged with the police by Mr Dinesh, a driver of the stolen tractor.

KAITHAL
Open darbar: The district administration organised an open darbar at Rajaound, 27 km from here on Wednesday. Out of a total of 200 complaints, 137 were redressed on the spot and the rest referred to the departments concerned for necessary action. The Deputy Commissioner, Ms Jaiwanti Sheokand, said that the open darbar scheme had received a positive response in different parts of the district..Top

Demonstration: Employees of the Food Corporation of India working in the Punjab region held a demonstration outside the regional office here on Thursday. A press release of the Bharatiya Khadya Nigam Karamchari Sangh said their agitation programme would include a 48-hour-long dharna outside the FCI headquarters in New Delhi from July 21.
Guru purnima: The local unit of the Shri Brahman Sabha celebrated Shri Gurudev Ved Vyas Guru Purnima Diwas at Parshuram Bhawan here on Thursday. Guru Ved Vyas had compiled the four vedas besides writing the Mahabharata.
Elected: The following have been elected as office-bearers of the
TopSubdivisional Engineers Association, Punjab PWD (B and R): president — Mr Jaswant Singh Dhillon; vice-president — Mr Harpal Singh Gill; general secretary — Mr Kulbir Singh Bains and joint secretary — Mr Kulwinder Singh Rao.
Memorandum: A deputation of the Sewerage Employees' Union of the Municipal Corporation (MC) met the Mayor, Mr Gian Chand Gupta, and submitted a memorandum to him. The memorandum pointed out that in 1965 there were 200 posts in the sewerage department while the present strength was only 78. Mr Gupta assured the delegates that their demand would be looked into.
Hailed: Chaudhary Gurmail Singh, a former Education Minister of Punjab and senior Congress leader, has hailed the appointment of Capt Amarinder Singh as the president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee. He hoped that the party workers would work unitedly under the new leader.
Office-bearers: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Shri Sanatan Dharam Sabha, Sector 32-D: president — Mr B.D. Mahajan; senior vice-president — Mr S.L. Singla; vice-president — Mr R.L. Sachdeva; general secretary — Mr Lekh Raj Sharma and joint secretary — Mr Siri Ram Thakedar.
Nominated: The Punjab State Valmiki and Mazhbi Sikh Sangharsh Samiti has nominated Mr Sat Pal Mattoo, Bhogpur, and Mr B.R. Sahota, Ferozepore, as vice-presidents of the sangharsh samiti. The other office-bearers will be nominated later by the state president, according to its general secretary, Mr Ram Krishan Kangra.
Security sought: Swami Krishnan and, president of the All-India Hindu Maha Sangh and founder of the Naina Devi Gufa, has demanded strict security arrangements in Jammu and Kashmir so that people may not leave the state out of fear. Swami Krishnanand, said he met a number of persons in the Jammu region who were feeling insecure and were keen on leaving the state. The situation in Jammu and Kashmir was so tense that the President and the Central Government must intervene and take serious steps to ensure security, he added.

HVC appointments: Mr Ram Lal Markenday, Himachal Vikas Congress (HVC) MLA, has been appointed president of the youth wing of the party. Mr Anil Singh Dogra has been nominated general secretary. These appointments have been made by Mr Sukh Ram, HVC president.
Criticised: Mr Anil Kumar Sharma, president of the cell for handicapped in the Congress, has criticised the BJP-HVC combine government for not announcing any concession for the disabled in the Budget proposals. He criticised the government for not increasing the pension of the disabled in the state.
