AMRITSAR
Doctors' rally: A rally was orgaised by the Junior Doctors Association, PCMS Association, Medical Students' Associaiton and Punjab State Medical and Dental Teachers' Association, seeking an early implementation of the new pay scales.
Dharna: Members of the Amritsar zone of the Punjab I.T.I. Employees Union staged a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Thursday. The president, Mr Chhottu Ram Dhiman, the secretary, Mr Harish Sharma, Mr Lakhbir Singh Chohan and Mr Gurbachan Singh expressed dissatisfaction over the pay-scale and demanded removal of anomalies.
FEROZEPORE
Grant: Mr Janmeja Singh Sekhon, Minister of State for Cooperation and Sainik Welfare, Punjab, said here on Thursday that the state government would allocate a grant of Rs 3 crore to the 284 gram panchayats of the district for development projects.
JALALABAD
Electrocuted: Mr Gurmail Singh, a truck cleaner, was electrocuted while covering the load with a net tarpaulin sheet which accidentally touched an over head high tension wire. The accident occurred in front of the Bajaj Filling Station.

Office-bearers: The president of the Bhartiya Janata Yuva Morcha, Jalandhar district, Mr Deepak Sharma, on Thursday appointed the following office-bearers of various units of the morcha. Phillaur — Mr Salwinder Singh (president) and Mr Narinder Gupta (general secretary); Noormahal — Mr Vijay Ohri and Mr Ashwani Arora; Shahkot — Mr Jatinder Singh and Mr Vijay Puri; Lohian — Mr Raju Ghumber and Mr Sanjeev Pabbi; Adampur — Mr Rajiv Panja and Mr Shiv Sangar; Kartarpur — Mr Ashwini Kumar; and Goraya —Mr Ashutosh Kalia and Mr Rajan Makkar.
PHAGWARA
Rotary Club: Dr Rita Bawa, Principal, Kamla Nehru College for Women, delivered the keynote address on "Functional literacy" at a function of the Rotary Club, Phagwara (Central).
Quacks: The legal cell of the Indian Medical Association, Punjab, has demanded stern action against quacks. Dr Raman Aggarwal, cell's state secretary, on Friday in a letter to all civil surgeons regretted that no effective steps had been taken against quacks who were practising allopathic medicine

Nominated: Prof A.S. Kang, former Dead of Arts and Languages of Kurukshetra University, has been nominated to the Advisory Committee of the Sahitya Academy, for a term of five years.
ROHTAK
Recovered: The district police has claimed to have recovered stolen goods worth Rs 7 lakh by solving 16 cases of robbery, dacoity and theft during the past one month. Stating this here on Thursday, the SSP, Mr K.K. Sharma, said six cases of murder, 16 of burglary and 40 of theft had been registered during this period. Besides, the police recovered 20,966 bottles of liquor and registered 31 cases under the Excise Act during this month.
SIRSA
Suicide: A jilted lover, Narinder Kumar (21), of Mandi Kalanwali, about 40 km from here, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in his home on Wednesday.
Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Sirsa National Cooperative House Construction Limited Residents' Welfare Society: president — Mr Sandeep Khanna; and secretary — Mr Ram Saran Saini.
SONEPAT
Pensioners' plea: Resentment prevails among government pensioners against the non-payment of D.A. instalments due to them from January this year. A spokesman for the Pensioners Welfare Association has urged the Chief Minister, Mr Bansi Lal, to order the immediate release of the instalments.

Bhajans: The Sirdi Sai Baba mandir in Sector 29 celebrated "Guru purnima" on Thursday by holding a four-hour-long programme of bhajans. Devotees who have contributed for the upliftment of the temple were honoured. A langer was served later on.
Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of Bharat Electronics Technicians' Welfare Association: president — Mr Sandeep Kumar; vice-president — Mr Shiv Kumar; general secretary — Mr Jang Bahadur; joint secretary — Mr Rajesh Jain; treasurer — Mr Bharat Lal.

  HIMACHAL PRADESH

HAMIRPUR
Snake bite: Mr Karamchand Soni (40), of Jhaniara village of Hamirpur district died of a snake bite on way to hospital on Wednesday night. He was employed with a local jeweller.
Killed: Mr Chander Lal was killed on the spot when the scooter he was riding collided with a truck near Chak Suker Chak village on the Jalalabad-Fazilka G.T. road. His sister Asha Rani was admitted to the civil hospital, for injuries.
