Nagrik forum
The general secretary of the Nagrik Welfare Forum, Mr
B.K. Chopra, on Saturday criticised the SAD-BJP
government for not abolishing the octroi and
"inspector-raj" from the state. He said the
government had failed to honour its pre-poll promises.
Arrested
The police has arrested Harjit Singh and Bhagwant
Singh, residents of Panjwar village, on the charge of
raping a girl of the same village.
Anti-malaria camp
An anti-malaria camp was organised at the Primary
Health Centre at Chabal on Friday under the presidentship
of Dr H.P. Aggarwal, SMO. Experts advised people to take
steps to avoid malaria.
Vacant posts
All vacant posts of District Attorney and Additional
District Attorney will be filled to clear the backlog of
work. This was stated by Mr Balbir Singh Chandi,
Director, Prosecution and Litigation-cum-Additional
Secretary, Legal Affairs, while addressing a meeting of
the local prosecution agencies on Saturday.
HOSHIARPUR
Arrested
The Amb police has arrested Kamal Sharma , alias
Kamal Kuthari, of Kamalpur mohalla here under Sections
307,323,406 and 34, IPC, and 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms
Act for allegedly firing at and injuring Mr Vishva Nath
Ohri. His accomplices Vikram Kumra, Arvind Sharma alias
Bobby, and Romesh Hans, all local residents, have
absconded.
PATHANKOT
Recruitment rally
A Punjab-level recruitment rally for the youth of
border villages has been organised by Gurj Division for
12 days from July 16. Prospective candidates will have to
go to Amritsar and Jalandhar for enrolment.
PATIALA
Play
The chairman of the Patiala Welfare Society, Mr Ajay
Thapar, on Saturday criticised the BJP-Shiv Sena
government in Maharashtra for allowing the staging of the
play "Mee Nathuram Godse Baltoy". He said
crores of Indians had been hurt by the play in which
Mahatma Gandhi had been maligned.
Inaugurated
The president of the SGPC, Mr Gurcharan Singh Tohra,
inaugurated a bridge between Kalyan and Bibipur villages,
near here, on Saturday.
Elected
The following have been elected office-bearers of the
M.M. Welfare Association (Mohalla Chah-Mughlan) here:
chief patron Mr Ramesh Kapila; president Mr
Raj Kumar; vice-president Mr Gurpreet Singh and
secretary Mr Hardial Singh.
Appeal
Members of the Punjab Medical Officers and
Para-Medical Staff Association of the PSEB have thanked
the Chief Minister Mr Parkash Singh Badal, for accepting
their demands. The president of the association, Dr
Naresh Raj appealed to the Chief Minister to accept the
rest of their demands, also such as grant of academic
allowance and conveyance allowance to all doctors with
effect from January 1996.
PHAGWARA
Crushed to death
Two scooter-borne youths, Arjun and Munih, were
crushed to death when a tanker knocked them down near
Jalowal Colony near Bhogpur on Friday. The tanker, coming
from the Pathankot side, went out of control and rammed
into the scooter. The tanker driver, Yashpal Singh, fled
after the accident. The Bhogpur police has registered a
case.
Old-age pension
The Minister of State for Education, Mr Swarna Ram,
said on Saturday that Rs 12 lakh had been released for
the old-age pension scheme. He was addressing a function
at the local Gurdwara Akalian to honour sarpanches and
panches of the Phagwara block.

Notice
The Senior Medical Officer here, Dr J.P. Singh, has
issued notices to unregistered medical practitioners to
stop practice, otherwise legal action will be taken
against them.
Meat shops
A deputation of local citizens has met the SDM, Mr
Sanjay Popli, and submitted a memorandum demanding that a
new meat market be constructed outside the city.
