CHANDIGARH, April
7While most fruits have become costly, prices of
almost all seasonal vegetables witnessed a further
decline in the local market during the past 24 hours.
During a survey of the
market today, it was found that orange witnessed biggest
jump in its price as it has gone up from Rs 40-50 to Rs
60-70 a dozen during this period. The price hike was due
to non-arrival of the fruit from Maharashtra during the
past two days. These days we are getting the fruit
from cold storages alone, due to which the price is on
the higher side, explained a trader.
Similarly, there was an
increase in the price of banana, as a dozen of the fruit
which was available between Rs 18 to Rs 20 just two days
back, was priced today at Rs 25. Same was the case with
the perry variety of mango, the price of
which increased from Rs 70 to Rs 100 due to its
non-arrival in the market during the past one week. The
safeda variety, however, registered a
downward trend, as a kg of the fruit, priced at Rs 50
just two days back, was available in the market for Rs 40
today. The fall was attributed to enhanced arrivals from
Hyderabad and surrounding areas.
On the other hand,
water-melon and melon have become costly during this
period. A kg water-melon, priced between Rs 10 and Rs 12
yesterday, was available for Rs 15 today. Similarly, the
price of melon has jumped from Rs 25 to Rs 35 during this
period. According to traders, the prices of these fruits
have increased owing to increased demand and lesser
supplies from different parts of Rajasthan during the
past two days.
On the other hand, the
prices of most of seasonal vegetables have further dipped
during the period.
A kg of ladys
finger, priced at Rs 30 yesterday, was available today
for Rs 24. Similarly, a kg of gourd, which was selling
for Rs 8 yesterday, was available in the market today for
Rs 5. Similarly, the price of bitter-gourd has come down
from Rs 24 to Rs 20 a kg during this period. According to
traders, the prices were slashed due to enhanced arrivals
of these vegetables from nearby areas.
Much to the relief of
people, the price of lemon has also started coming down
during this period. If a kg of lemon was priced yesterday
at Rs 60, it was available today for Rs 40, due to
increased arrivals from Chennai and surrounding areas
during this period.
The prices of other
vegetables and fruits are as follows:
cauliflower-Rs 3 a kg, cabbage-Rs 3, beans-Rs 12, peas-Rs
10, ginger-Rs 60, carrot-Rs 10, tomato-Rs 10, cucumber-Rs
20, brinjal-Rs 10, squash gourd-Rs 10, onion-Rs 7-8,
potato-Rs 3, grapes-Rs 40, pomegranate-Rs 35,
strawberry-Rs 60, pineapple-Rs 25 per piece, mausami-Rs
60 per dozen.
