AMRITSAR
Project on antibodies:
A UGC-sponsored project costing Rs 6.5 lakh entitled "Purification, characterisation and applications of some phytolectins from Indian plants" has been granted to Dr Jatinder Singh and Dr Sukhdev Singh of the Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry of Guru Nanak Dev University for three years. The project has been sanctioned to develop indigenous biotechnology for the purification of human antibodies and interleukins using phytolectins obtained from Indian plants.

Seminar:
The Society for Service to Voluntary Agencies the Social Security and Welfare of Women and Children and Planning Departments Punjab, jointly organised a one day workshop-cum-seminar on "Development and employment of women" here on Tuesday. Mrs Romila Dubey, Secretary, Punjab, inaugurated the seminar and released a booklet.

BATHINDA
Fast:
Members of All-India Station Masters Association have decided to observe a past in front of the residence of the Prime Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee, on April 12 to press for the acceptance of their demands In a press note issued here on Wednesday Mr Rajesh Sharma, President of the association, Ambala division, said their demands included the minimum pay scale of Rs 5500 to Rs 9000, running allowance.

Medical camp: Four hundred patients were examined and given medicines free of cost at a medical camp organised at Janata Nagar by the Inner Wheel Club in association with Rotary and Rotract clubs on Tuesday.

Bank's plea: The State Bank of Patiala Staff Union has urged the Punjab Food Minister, Mr Chiranji Lal Garg, to order a probe into the alleged incident forcible of lifting of 30 trucks of paddy from a sheller of Goniana being run by Arora Trading Company by Punsup officials recently. Mr M.M.Behal, General Secretary of the union, said the bank had lien over the paddy stock as it had advanced lakhs of rupees to the company.

'Scrap test': As many as 50 students have urged the Punjabi University authorities to scrap the entrance test for commerce courses. In a press note issued here on Tuesday, they pointed out that Panjab University had already scrapped the entrance test for admission to commerce causes.

Bar body:
Mr Sukhwinder Singh Kahlon, Mr Inderjit Singh Bajwa and Mr Paramjit Singh have been elected President, Secretary and Vice-President of the District Bar Association here.

KAPURTHALA
Rail coaches:
The Rail Coach Factory here has manufactured 1,087 coaches, including 230 air-conditioned ones, upto March 31, this year. The RCF plans to manufacture 1,073 coaches, including 232 air-conditioned ones during the current financial year.

Focal points: The Punjab Government has issued a notification for setting up industrial units at 22 focal points in the district. Mrs Usha R. Sharma, Deputy Commissioner, said here on Tuesday that persons interested to set up units in focal points could submit applications to the District Manager, District Industries Centre, till April 16.

LUDHIANA
CBI probe sought:
The Anti-Corruption Council of India has demanded a CBI inquiry into alleged acts of some high officials of Punjab State Hosiery Development Corporation., which led to its closure. Dr Shiv Gupta, Secretary General of the Council, in a press statement has alleged that this research centre was declared a sick unit due to embezzlement of funds and misuse of official powers by certain senior functionaries of the corporation.

MC election:
Mr Sohan Lal and Mr Rajinder Chopra have been elected Senior Vice-President and Junior Vice-President, respectively, of the local municipal council.

Water scarcity: There is an acute scarcity of potable water here . In Muhallas Bhatwara, Raoka, Nalapur, residents are forced to drink contaminated water. According to the Public Health Department old pipes had become rusty and appealed to the residents to get their pipe lines checked.

Celebrated:
Environment day was celebrated here on Tuesday at Guru Harkishan Public School in collaboration with the local Centre for Development, Punjab State Council for Science and Technology and the NSS Department of Punjabi University. Dr Baltej Singh Mann, Coordinator, NSS, inaugurated the seminar, Principal Jasvinder Kaur Dardi students to plant trees.

Appointed:
Mr Jaspal Singh Makkar of Machhiwara has been appointed Secretary of the District Ludhiana Congress (rural) by the Punjab unit President, Capt Amarinder Singh. He is a son of Mr Jagmohan Singh Makkar, who was killed by terrorists.

Farmers warned: Mr H.S. Saluja, Deputy Superintending Engineer, PSEB, here has directed farmers to keep their wheat stocks away from electric wires and transformers. In case of sudden sparking in a transformer, they should inform the nearest SDO, PSEB, he said.top

Invited: Professor Jitendra Mohan of the Department of Psychology, Panjab University has been invited to preside over a session and conduct a symposium on yoga and mental training at the 3rd World Congress on Mental Training to be held at the University of Utah, USA,from May 19 to 23. He will also preside over another session and present a paper on `` Personality and Organisational Behaviour: An Indian Perspective "at the biennial conference of International Society of Individual Differences to be held at Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, ,from July 5 to 8.

Lok Adalat: Mr Justice H.S. Brar, a Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and Executive Chairman, Punjab Legal Services Authority, will inaugurate the 13th permanent Lok Adalat at Fatehgarh Sahib on April 10, according to Mr S.S.Arora, Member Secretary. Mr Justice V.K. Bali, will preside.

Celebrated: The 58th birthday of Sant Asa Ram ji Bapu was celebrated by the Yog Vedant Seva Samiti at Sector 20 here on Wednesday. A shobha yatra was organised , which passed through different sectors of the city. A langar was also served after the Ramayana path.

Memorandum:
The Republican Party of India, Haryana unit, on Tuesday presented a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner here for submission to the President Mr K.R. Narayanan seeking the dismissal of the Vajpayee Government because of its alleged failure on all fronts and for ignoring the interests of Dalits, Scheduled Castes, minorities and women Mr Kundan Chaudhry, President of the state unit, presented the memorandum.

Course recognised:
The State Board of Technical Education, Haryana, has granted recognition to one and two year diploma courses in computer sciences to Hartron workstation, Gurgaon, Mr Sachin Malik, Director, Hartron Workstation, said.

Boycotted:
Government teachers boycotted the evaluation of matric examination answer sheets on Tuesday to protest against the non-payment of their remuneration for middle examination and for evaluation of papers of physical education, matric examination, 1997.

KURUKSHETRA
Electrocuted:
An assistant line man, Gian Singh who was working on an electric pole was electrocuted when an employee of a floor mill mistakenly, started the generating set near Amin Road here on Monday. According to official sources, the body was removed from the pole on Tuesday and cremated by his relatives. The police has registered a case.

Prize distribution: The Law Department of Kurukshetra University organised a three-day "moot court declamation and elocution competition in which over 50 students took part. Mr C R Goyal, District and Sessions Judge on Tuesday distributed prizes to the winners of the competitions and commended the efforts by the students.

REWARI
Remand for two:
Mr Vijendra Soni, President and Mr Ramkishan Mahlawt General Secretary of the Nagar Sudhar Samiti, Bawal, have been remanded in judicial custody till April 17 by Mrs Anita Dahiya, Judicial Magistrate. They were arrested on April 4 by the Bawal police following the registration of a case of cheating and forgery against them on the basis of a complaint filed by Mr Bhoop Singh, President of another Nagar Sudhar Samiti, Bawla. Traders and shopkeepers of Bawla observed a five-hour bandh on Monday in protest against the arrest of the two leaders.

ROHTAK
Looted:
An amount of Rs 1.30 lakh was looted from a trader at gunpoint by two car-borne robbers near Arwal village in the district on Tuesday. According to the police, the victim Kalu Ram, belonging to Juhi village in Bhiwani district, was on his way from Jhajjar town to Bhiwani.

SIRSA
New college:
A new government college at Dabwali sub-division in the district will start functioning from July this year. Mr K.K.Sehgal, Principal of Government National College, Sirsa, has been directed by the DHE, Haryana, to inspect and submit report in this connection.

Voters' list: The publication of voters' list will start from April 20. Informing this, the Deputy Commissioner and District Election Office, Dr Avtar Singh said claims and objections would be accepted up to May 20, and will be disposed off by June 21. The final voters' list will be published on July 21.

SONEPAT
Retired:
Mr Sukh Lal Dhankar, Additional Superintendent of Police here, retired on Monday after putting in 35 years of service. Mr Dhankar was posted in this district about five months ago. He was given a warm send-off by his colleagues.

BILASPUR
Summer festival:
The four-day Summer Festival at Ghumarwin will be declared a district-level function and the government will provide full financial support to the festival. This was announced by the minister of State for Cooperatives, Mr Rikhiram Kondal, while inaugurating the festival at Ghumarwin, 30 km from here on Tuesday.

CHAMBA
One convicted:
The Sessions Judge, Chamba, Mr B.S.Chauhan on Tuesday convicted Kailash Chand, alias Kailaso, uppadhan of the Ohra panchayat for an offence under Section 376 of the IPC and sentenced him to an imprisonment of seven years and imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 on him. In default of payment of the fine he has to further undergo imprisonment for one year.

Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Parvatiya Gramin Bank Officers Association: President — Mr O.P. Kondal; Vice-President — Mr Sharif Hussain Marshall; General Secretary — Mr Sanjay Patyal; Joint Secretary — Mr Subhash Sharma; and Finance Secretary — Mr Muklesh Sharma.

KANGRA
In-laws held:
The police on Tuesday arrested in-laws of Anita (23) of Jadoli village of the district for allegedly burning her to death. She was married in February and was done to death by her in-laws, the victim's father Dev Raj alleged. Her husband Vinod Kumar, father-in-law Balu Ram and mother-in-law Santosh Kumari were arrested and a case under Sections 302 and 34 of the IPC has been registered against them.

Children's camp: A three-day camp for schoolchildren, organised by the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) in which 150 children from 43 places of the district participated, concluded here on Tuesday. Addressing the children, a RSS's prant prachark Mr Rajinder said these camps aimed at infusing moral values among children.

SUNDERNAGAR
Sentenced:
Mr Samsher Singh, Additional Sessions Judge, Mandi division on Tuesday sentenced Mohan Singh of Soura village for murdering Kishan Singh of Dholongi village to rigorous imprisonment for life and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on him. In default of payment of fine he will further undergo simple imprisonment for one year.

Black badges: Employees of the SDM office here have been wearing black badges in protest against the non-acceptance of their demands. The local unit of the Deputy Commissioner Employees union organised a gate meeting in front of the office of the SDM on Tuesday. According to Mr K.C.Rao, the unit president protest meetings would continue till April 9 and if their demands were not accepted by them the state level body would decide the future action.top
