"India will be a world leader in next millennium"
First Prize (Rs 1500)

India is one of the largest sub-continents of the world, with, perhaps, the largest number of problems as well. Now as a new millennium is about to start everyone has some expectations from the future. I, being a part of my country, want some improvements in it.

Poonam ChopraWhat kind of ideal do I dream for my country? In the first place, poverty would be banished from my country. There would be no beggars and no one would cry out for food. There would be no slums.

Secondly, there would be development of rural areas and proper food and water supply would be provided to it alongwith other requirements of livelihood.

There would be free and compulsory primary education for everyone. No one would be duped for lack of knowledge of the three Rs —reading, writing and arithmetic. Moreover, education would be job-oriented so that people are able to decide their goal and work purposefully to achieve it.

With spread of education, population would be controlled. Everyone would have a happy family of one child who would be well-fed, clothed and sent to school.

Our space technology too would be highly developed and at par with today’s developed nations of world. We too would be in news for sending cosmonauts to various planets for research and development in this area.

Further, there would also be substantial advancement in the field of agriculture. We would have adequate means of irrigation and latest methods of raising crops. Thus we would be self-sufficient and able to export food to other countries.

The pollution problem in our country would also be solved as research would show the way to rendering these toxic fumes harmless. People would have a clean and healthy environment to live in.

India is a beautiful land with beautiful tourist spots. The tourist spots would be developed and maintained well so that deterioration environment and unhygienic conditions become a story of past.

Monuments too would be well-preserved. All those, owing to the hazards of modern development, such as the soiling of Taj Mahal by the Mathura refinery, would be maintained by scientific methods. Foreigners would wish to return again and again and thus it would lead to our earning valuable foreign exchange besides strengthening the ties with foreign countries.

Society would be well-adjusted. All communities would forget their petty differences and live together in peace and harmony. Communal riots and quarrels would be a thing of the past.

Social problems would have ended. The dowry system and bride-burning would be regarded as primitive happenings and child marriage, caste discrimination as retrograde customs.

Women would be respected, liberated and discrimination between men and women would be a dream of the past. Women would be treated as individuals with their own desires.

Finally, politics would have the basis of some good moral character and under the control of some educated and sensible persons. It would not indulge criminals. Students would also not indulge in dirty politics. Thus, politicians would not be caught in a rat race to make money.

The India of my dreams in the next millennium is one which has overcome all its present day problems and living in India would be like living in a paradise.

Second Prize (Rs 1000)

Clean roads, clean streets, no encroachments, flyovers, pollution control, population under control, freedom from corruption.

Divya SharmaSuch a chain of clean hearts leads me to my India of dreams. The roads of honesty lead to the gate of my new India in the next millennium. India I ought to seek. India which according to me everybody ought to seek. The India of the dreams of Bapu and many freedom fighters. India which has its own stand in the world. India ahead in its technology and power. The country which is one of the fully developed nations but is not westernised. It has rich culture and heritage. It has moved ahead with its rich and old culture, heritage, ethics and its strong will power has the potential to reach position where it can tell the world that it is not a boat caught in a typhoon but firm rock ready to face any challenge.

India of my dreams has peace and prosperity in every nook and corner. People are happy and educated. They can understand what is wrong and what is right. Politics is a clean game, with no dirty play for chairs at a higher level. The politicians are honest. They fight in Parliament for the welfare of the people and not to secure their own chairs. They keep their promises with the public.

The country is fully protected from web of terrorism. The Mujahideens in Kashmir, LTTE in the South, ULFA in the West and the mafia in the East are all shattered. Smuggling is thus controlled. There is no fear in the mind of people of the millitants. Kashmir is resumed as the "Paradise on the earth". Mumbai is again called the "Bollywood City".

My India of dreams has no scams. It is free from corruption and dishonest deeds. No more fodder scams and fodder-eating leaders as Laloo Prasad Yadav, and stock market holders like Harshad Mehta, no more Bofors and so forth.

Literacy is the mission of the Indian Government. "For work and not for fame".

The people are very hard-working and understanding. Many of them are famous like Dr Amartya Sen and Arundhati Roy.

The technology used by scientists and industrialists is the best in the whole world. India in the next millennium has all the new technology — the best satellites, aircraft, railways, automobiles and arms and ammunition.

No seeds of enmity are sown by social, religious and political leaders. They have similar motives — welfare of the people and unity and integrity of the country. The forests and wildlife are fully preserved. The hill stations are made more attractive for tourists.

The colours of our flag are well expressed. The Kesri or saffron shown power to face challenges, white shows peace and prosperity and green depicts greenery and need to save the earth from the disastrous pollution.

Third Prize (Rs 750)

It is difficult to predict the India of tomorrow. Prophecies have no place in political and national life. But coming events cast their shadow before. so from the present political and social set-up we can foretell that India in the next millennium will be happier, richer and safer than it is today.

Amit SahaiNo doubt we are free, but there is no of freedom on our faces. glow Poverty, sense of insecurity and unemployment stare us in our faces. Illiteracy, communalism, economic inequality, social injustice and narrow-mindedness are rampant today.

But we should not be pessimists. Rome was not built in a day. We are confident that by the next millennium most of our problems will be solved and our motherland will reach the pinnacle of glory and grandeur in every field.

In the international sphere, India will occupy a proud place in the comity of nations. Her strenuous and sincere efforts to bring about world peace will bear fruit. Our relations with neighbouring countries will improve.

Gandhiji wanted India to be a classless and casteless society, where all communities will live in perfect harmony. In the coming years, caste distinctions will be removed. Social evils like dowry will disappear.

The food problem will be solved. Everyone will have a house to live in, food to take and clothes to wear. There will be a socialistic pattern of society. The ghost of unemployment will be driven out. Floods and famines will be controlled. Instead of importing, India will export food grains. There will be no exploitation. Villages will have the amenities of life. In short, India will be again a land of milk and honey.

In the next millennium, India will witness a revolution in the field of science, technology and education. It will compete with advanced nations of the world. Illiteracy will be wiped away. Vocational and technical education will receive an tremendous fillip. India will once again be a seat of light and learning. writers, musicians, poets, artists and philosophers will command respect in society. India will make a marked progress in the field of art.

Women will have a prominent place in the society. They will be given a status of equality. Students will be well-behaved and disciplined. They will not indulge in anti-social activities. Instead of wasting time, they will put their energy in making India strong.

To say the least, we will have a new heaven on earth. There will be an all around progress and prosperity. People will be mentally, morally, spiritually and physically better. Nepotism, favouritism, corruption and inefficiency which today are eating into the vitals of our society, will take wings.

I wish and pray that India of my dreams in the next millennium may be glorious, gay and grand as I have painted. But our government does not have a magic wand. People’s whole-hearted and concerted efforts are required to translate this vision into a reality i.e. to make India a strong, prosperous and loving nation of the world.
