TN Speaker not to respond
CHENNAI, April 13 (PTI) — Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker P.T.R. Palanivelrajan today told the state Assembly that he would not respond to the summons sent to him by the Madras High Court on a case filed by an AIADMK MP challenging the Assembly resolution awarding 15 days’ simple imprisonment to AIADMK MLA R. Thamaraikkani for breach of privilege on March 24. He said the decision not to respond to the summons was only to protect the sovereignty of the House.

Kazhagam's protest
CHENNAI, April 13 (PTI) — The police have refused permission to a "burn Vedas" agitational programme which was proposed here tomorrow by the Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam, a regional party, to protest against the Centre’s decision to celebrate 1999 as ‘Sanskrit year’.

15 killed in mishap
CHITTAGONG, April 13 (AFP) — At least 15 persons were killed here after a truck loaded with construction workers collided with a taxi and careered off the road in suburban Fauzdarhat district, police said today. Five of the victims were inside the car while 10 others were on the truck.

Yeltsin impeachment
MOSCOW, April 13 (Reuters) — The Russia’s state Duma Lower House of Parliament is likely to schedule a ballot on whether to impeach President Boris Yeltsin on May 13, 14 or 15, communist leader Gennady Zyuganov said today. Mr Zyuganov, speaking after Duma’s managing council meeting, said deputies still had to vote on the date.

NEW DELHI, April 13 (PTI) — The Supreme Court has directed the Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary, who heads the Commission Management Board, to appear before it on April 26 and explain why orders for creation of green belt around the Taj Mahal has not been implemented.

Water sharing
DHAKA, April 13 (Reuters) — Dhaka and New Delhi may expand water-sharing deals beyond the Ganga to other common rivers, Bangladeshi Water Resources Minister said today. "There is no problem about sharing the Ganga water with India, and it is going on smoothly," Flood Control and Water Resources Minister Abdur Razzak told reporters after returning from India.

MUMBAI, April 13 (UNI) — The Bombay High Court today quashed the Maharashtra Government's order to transfer senior IAS officer Arun Bhatia and issued direction to reinstate him as Municipal Commissioner at Pune. A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice, Y.K. Sabarwal and Justice S. Radhakrishnan gave the direction to reinstate him on two public interest litigations filed by Pune-based citizens organisations.
