Nishant tested again
CHANDIPUR-ON-SEA (Orissa), April 14 — The indigenously built India's unmanned aircraft "Nishant" was successfully test-flown for the second day today from the interim test range (ITR) here. Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Scientific Adviser to the Defence Ministry, and other defence scientists were present at the ITR when the aircraft was test-flown at 1 p.m.
Iran missile
TEHRAN, April 14 — Iran said it had successfully test-fired today an advanced anti-aircraft missile which would heavily contribute to its arsenal. "It was fired this morning and it successfully hit and destroyed a mock enemy target". Iranian state television quoted a Defence Ministry spokesman as saying.

TIRUPATI, April 14 (UNI) — Naxalites of the Peoples War Group blasted the Station Superintendent's office early today at Puttur railway station, about 40 km from here, in Chittor district of Andhra Pradesh. According to the police, the Naxals of Kalangi Dalam arrived at the railway station around 3 a.m. and asked the staff of come out and blasted it using three bags of explosives.

LUCKNOW, April 14 (PTI) — The Congress and the Lok Dal have decided to join hands in Uttar Pradesh in a bid to fight the BJP, the two parties would launch a "decisive battle against communal and casteist forces" and expose the "misrule" of the BJP-led coalition government in the state, a joint statement said here today.

JOHANNESBURG, April 14 (Reuters) — President Nelson Mandela today formally declared June 2 as the date for the election that would end his leadership of South Africa. "The President signed the proclamation this morning in his office in Pretoria. The election in now firmly cast in stone," Presidential spokesman Parks Mankahlana told Reuters.

NEW DELHI, April 14 (PTI) — There was high drama at Indira Gandhi International Airport in the wee hours today as a Bangkok-bound Thai Airways flight (TG-316) made an emergency landing following a bomb hoax. According to airport sources, soon after the emergency landing passengers were evacuated and the aircraft was examined.

Hostages released
BOGOTA (Colombia), April 14 (AP) — Leftist rebels who hijacked Avianca domestic flight yesterday released six hostages, five elderly persons and a baby, to the International Red Cross. "We don't have their identities, but we know that they are well", Mr Rolin Wavre, Deputy Red Cross Chief for Colombia, told the Associated Press.
3 killed in mishap
MADURAI, April 14 (UNI) — Three Railway employees were mowed down by the Tirunelveli-Erode passenger train at Kudalnagar on the city's outskirts this morning. Two others were injured in the accident. According to Railway sources, the mishap occurred when the victims, engaged in maintenance work, failed to hear the approaching train.
Speed record
TOKYO, April 14 (DPA) — Japanese monorail train today established a new record high speed for a Railway at 552 km per hour, 2 km per hour quicker than the previous best, reports said. The Maglev Train, with a linear induction motor, was running on an 18.4 km test track in Yamanashi province West of Tokyo.
Delhi rocked
NEW DELHI, April 14 (PTI) — A moderate tremor shook the Capital and several parts of northern India at around 10.54 p.m. tonight, the Met Office said. The quake, measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale, had its epicentre in Chamoli district of Uttar Pradesh and lasted for nearly 20 seconds. "This is an aftershock of the earthquake that hit northern India on March 29".
