Passports:
Passport applications received at the office here up to serial number 402/109913/98 till December 18, last year have been processed. Passports have been despatched to the persons concerned whose applications were complete in all respects till the week ending April 12.
LUDHIANA

Wheat arrivals:
Fresh arrivals of wheat crop have been reported at Asia's biggest grain market in Khanna, 40 km from here. Official agencies had purchased 3,18,205 quintals of wheat till Wednesday at the official fixed price of Rs 550 per quintal.
Special drive:
The district administration has decided to launch a special drive to check the sale of substandard eatables, rotten fruits and vegetables and to remove garbage in the city. This decision was taken at a meeting of officers of different departments held here on Thursday under the chairmanship of Mr Arun Goel, Deputy Commissioner.
Agitation:
The Punjab Trade and Industry Forum and the Punjab Pradesh Beopar Mandal have decided to launch a joint agitation in protest against the "anti-trade and anti-industry" policies of the state government. Mr Harish Khanna and Mr Jagmohan Sharma, presidents of the forum and the mandal, respectively, said here on Thursday that the protest would begin by observing a "black day" on April 26.
Training programme:
Dr Sarjit Singh Gill, Additional Director, Extension Education, Communication Centre, Punjab Agricultural University, has exhorted farmers to adopt mechanical and biological control in the management of sugarcane borners with least emphasis on the use of insecticides. He was addressing a seminar-cum-training programme on "Bio-Intensive Large Scale Integrated Pest Management Trial on Sugarcane" at Nawanshahar Cooperative Sugar Mill on Friday.
MOGA
Sessions court sought :
The President of the Moga Bar Association, Mr Nasib Bawa, while addressing members of the bar today urged the Punjab Government to set up a sessions court here. He further sought the merging of Dharamkot town and its neighbouring villages into Moga, as promised by the then Chief Minister of Punjab, Beant Singh.
Action sought:
Residents here have urged the authorities concerned to check the misuse of red lights on vehicles and sought action against those found guilty.
Rates fixed:
The Deputy Commissioner Mr Kulbir Singh Kang,has fixed the rates of both bricks and tiles in the district. The prices has been fixed at Rs 1,350 per thousand bricks and Rs 1,500 per thousand tiles.

Elected:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the local Lions Club (Qila Mubarak) here: President — Mr Rakesh Cajla; Secretary — Mr R.C. Aggarwal; and Treasurer — Mr Arun Gupta.
Camp:
The Dedicated Brothers Group organised a special health check-up-cum-free medicine distribution camp at Rauni village on Thursday. It was held to commemorate 300 years of the birth of the Khalsa Panth.
Urged:
The Punjab State Karamchari Dal met here on Thursday and urged the state government to increase LTC, house rent, remove ban on recruitments, give bonus and DA on central pattern and to implement the anomaly committee report.
Special exam:
Mr Madan Lal Hasija, Director, Language Department, Punjab, said in a statement here on Thursday that a special exam for Punjabi Parbodh will be held on April 20 here.
Medical camp: About 3,000 patients were examined and given medicines free of cost at an eight-day free homoeopathic medical camp organised by the State Council of Homoeopathic System of Medicine, Bhai Ghanyaji Charitable Trust and Prerna Charitable Trust at Gurdwara Dukhniwaran Sahib here to mark the 300th birth anniversary of the Khalsa.

IBP tanker crashes :An oil tanker belonging to an IBP dealer of Dhuri yesterday hit a chowk at a crossing near the local PWD rest house. Failure of brakes was said to be the cause of the accident, according to the driver.

First-aid camp:
The local branch of the State Bank of Patiala organised a two-day first-aid camp in front of the bank building from April 13 to provide medical facilities for the devotees coming to Anandpur Sahib.
Office-bearers:

Crop destroyed:
Wheat crop in 50 acres was destroyed in a fire at Dharmheri, Hasanpur and Dutal villages due to a short-circuit recently.
Killed:
Randhir Singh of Bibipur village was killed at his farm when he was operating a harvesting machine. The combine of the machine hit the latter and he died on the spot.

Merged: The Federation of Chandigarh Traders, at its meeting here on Friday, decided to merge with the Chandigarh Beopar Mandal in the interest of the unity among the traders of the city. Visited: The Mayor, Mr Kewal Krishan Addiwal, along with the Punjab Minister for Forests, Mr Mohan Lal, on Friday visited the furniture market near the Badheri village, which was gutted in a fire on Thursday. Mr Addiwal and Prof M.M. Puri also visited the site in Sector 25, where the Janata and the Kumhar colonies are to be rehabilitated soon.
Elected:
The following have been elected office-bearers of Mubarikpur Agriculture and Co-operative Service Society Limited: President — Mr Krishan Pal Sharma; Senior Vice-Presidents — Mr Manishwar Singh Dhillon ( Daffarpur) and Mr Surmukh Singh (Kheri); Members — Mr Roop Chand (Mirpur), Mr Gurnam Singh (Pandwala), Mr Ujagar Singh and Mr Manohar Lal (both Sundran) and Mr Nathu Ram (Mubarikpur).
Memorandum: A delegation of the UT Building Maintenance Workers Union met the Adviser to the Administrator on Friday and submitted a memorandum of their demands. Mr Ramesh Kumar Chandoliya, President of the union, said the demands discussed included bonus for the year 1998- 99, regularisation of daily wage workers, abolition of the contract system, release of DA instalment and filling of vacant posts.
Function: A function, dedicated to the memory of the ex-Chairman of the Punjab Public Service Commission, Mr Amarjit Singh, will be organised by the Punjabi Vikas Manch on April 18, in the Ayurvedic College auditorium here. This was stated by the Secretary-General of the manch, Mr Parvinder Singh.

PANIPAT
Protest:
The Haryana Roadways Workers Union held a meeting here on Friday in protest against the killing of Rakesh Kumar, a bus conductor of Panipat depot, by a gang of robbers on Wednesday near Muzaffar Nagar. Mr Ram Bhagat, State President of the Union, demanded compensation for the family of the deceased.

Arrested:
A case of molestation of a minor girl has been reported from the district. According to police sources, two youths of Quilla mohalla molested the girl at Ambedkar colony, and one of them was arrested. A case of under Sections 354, 452/34, IPC, has been registered.
Condemned:
the District Youth Congress Committee (DYCC) Urban has condemned the present trend of holding caste-based conferences. In a joint statement here on Friday Mr Om Prakash Gehlot and Mr Jitendra Saini, General Secretary of the DYCC and the State Secretary of the Akhil Bhartiya Rajiv Gandhi Brigade, respectively, alleged that some ministers and former ministers of Haryana were widening the gap between different castes by organising such caste-based conferences for the past few months.
SONEPAT

Arrested:
The police on Friday claimed to have arrested a proclaimed offender, Anil, alias Mehardeen, after one year. He was produced before the National Human Rights Commission and the Mahila Dakhyata Samiti, who had been seeking his arrest. The Senior Superintendent of Police, Mr K. Selvraj, said the culprit was allegedly involved in a quarrel between two families.
Mass marriages:
The Shri Ram Sharnam Ashram organised a mass marriage ceremony in Sector 15 here on Friday where marriages of five girls were solemnised.

Reward controversy
: Mr Ajay Sondhi, a shopkeeper of Nadaun town of the district, has alleged that he was deliberately denied the reward for giving information to the police regarding two persons accused in a murder case after seeing the serial "India's Most Wanted". The district police chief had given an assurance regarding the reward, he added.
KANGRA

Condemned:
The Himachal Pradesh Medical Officers Association on Thursday condemned the state government's move to appoint "ayurvedic chikitsa adhikaris" at allopathic institutions in the state. They demanded the time-scale promotion case to be settled at the earliest.
SHIMLA

"Vidya upasaks":
The state committee of the Democratic Youth Federation of India has criticised the Himachal Pradesh Government's move to appoint "vidya upasaks" in place of JBT teachers at primary schools. It urged the state government not to charge any fee for JBT the test and the application forms should be free of cost.
