SOPU flays poll rule
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Aug 13 — An important rule of the election process in Panjab University came in for sharp criticism by the Students Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU) at a press conference here today.

Addressing the press conference, Dayal Pratap Randhawa, president of SOPU, said a rule regarding contesting elections said a candidate, on being merely accused of an offence, could be suspended.

In order to take benefit of the rule, student leaders were being falsely implicated, he alleged. The rule needed immediate attention and should only apply to students who were found guilty, Randhawa said.

He was referring to the recent incident in the university when he was arrested and some others were named in the FIR.

He expressed his dissatisfaction with the police functioning in the university. The police should be called only when the internal security system failed, he suggested.

Randhawa also referred to the importance of an independent inquiry into the police action in the past. He had been arrested in an assault case recently.

'Name playground'

The Haryana Students Association, in a press conference held today, demanded that the university authorities name a playground after Major Vikram Batra, a hero of the battle in Kargil. Bhupinder, a leader of the organisation, said the martyr was a student of the university a few years ago.

Seats filled

All seats in BSc first-year (honours school) in all science departments in Panjab University and in B Pharma were filled during the first round of counselling, according to an official release. The departments claimed that the response had been extraordinary.

As many as 1,743 students applied for 313 seats. The last student admitted this year had 148.75 marks in CET, compared to 123.50 marks last year.Back
