Price Watch
Prices of fruits stable
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Aug 17 — Barring a few, there has been no change in the prices of a majority of commonly used fruit in the local market during the past four days.

During a survey of markets it was found that the price of mango was rising with each passing day due to shrinking arrivals in the market, the reason of which was that the crop was almost over down in the south and in Uttar Pardesh. A kg of the 'chausa' variety of mango, which is the only available mango variety, priced at Rs 40 just four days ago, could be purchased today for Rs 50. The wholesale price has increased from Rs 180 to Rs 200 per 7 kg pack.

On the other hand, the price of 'baggugosha' has come down during this period. A kg of the fruit, priced at Rs 50 last week, could be purchased today for Rs 40. The wholesale price of the same has dipped from Rs 240 to Rs 200 per 12 kg pack. According to traders, the decrease in the price was due to higher arrivals of the fruit from Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.

Guava, another major summer fruit, could be purchased at its old price of Rs 20 in the retail market and for Rs 12 a kg in wholesale market. Similarly, one could purchase plum for Rs 40 a kg, the price which is prevailing in the market for the past one month as there was no change in the quantum of arrivals in the market from Himachal Pradesh during this period.

Even as the royal variety of apple could be purchased for Rs 40 a kg in retail and for Rs 500 per 18 kg pack, apple lovers could buy the golden variety of the fruit for Rs 25 a kg in retail and for Rs 250 per 18 kg pack.

There was no change in the price of papaya as it could be had for Rs 20 a kg in retail and for Rs 15 a kg in the wholesale market. The same was the case with banana, as these were available in the retail market for Rs 20 a dozen and in the wholesale market for Rs 130 per 100 pieces.

If the local variety of pomegranate could be purchased for Rs 40 a kg in retail and for 130 per 4 kg pack in wholesale, the 'kandhari' variety of the fruit could be had for Rs 80 a kg in retail and for Rs 140 per 2 kg pack in the wholesale market.

'Mausambi' was priced at Rs 40 a dozen in retail and for Rs 110 per 4 dozen in the wholesale market. The fruit was priced at Rs 70 a dozen during last fortnight but arrival of fresh crop has eased the situation, resulting in dipping of the price.Back
