GURDASPUR
Cheat held:
The police has arrested a cheat involved in extracting money on the pretext of providing jobs to the unemployed youths and for constructing gurdwaras. According to Mr Varinder Kumar, SSP, the accused has been identified as Gurmeet Singh of Kot Fatta village in Bathinda district and the police has recovered Rs 50,000 which he had extorted from Sucha Singh of Dhariwal to provide a job to his unemployed brother, Pritam Singh in a railway coach factory.
Cement recovered: The police has arrested Baljit Singh from Jugial, a colony of Ranjit Sagar Dam, and recovered 2556 kg of cement stolen from the dam site. His accomplice, Salwinder Singh, an employee of the Fire Brigade at the dam was also arrested. A case under Sections 379/411 of the IPC has been registered against them at Shahpur Kandi police station.

HOSHIARPUR
Resentment:
Resentment prevails among doctors and Class IV employees of the local ESI Hospital, against the Health Department for not releasing their salaries for the past two months. A spokesman of the employees urged the Chief Minister to get their salaries released at the earliest to save them from starvation.

PATIALA
Academic session:
The Finance Minister, Capt Kanwaljit Singh while inaugurating the new academic session of Guru Harkrishan College exhorted the students to develop their all round personality and professional skills. Dr B.S. Mann, co-ordinator, IAS training centre of Punjabi University, said the globalisation of the Indian market had stimulated the need for professionals. He hoped that the college would assess and monitor development of each student, individually.
Compensation: The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum here, has directed Air-Pak International travel agency to pay Rs 10,000 to Mr Suresh Mittal of Anand Nagar who had purchased a ticket from the travel agency, for an overseas trip. The travel agent, however, had confirmed the ticket without booking it with the airlines. Mr G.S. Khurana, President District Consumer Forum, upheld the complaint of the consumer and directed the travel agency to pay the compensation within 15 days.

AMBALA
Hardship faced:
The local business community is facing hardship in getting the cheques of other banks encashed as these are located at Ambala cantonment. Mr Kirti Prasad Jain, Chairman, Industrial Cell of Haryana BJP, has demanded that the cheques received till 2 p.m. be cleared on the same day. He said he had written letters to the authorities concerned in this regard.

KAITHAL
Accident:
One person was killed and four others were injured when a four wheeler hit a tree near Pundri, about 16 km from here, on Sunday. The deceased has been identified as Roop Chand of Pundri. The injured have been admitted to the hospital. The police has registered a case against the driver for rash driving and impounded the vehicle.

KURUKSHETRA
Cremated:
Prof S.N. Dubey (58), Chairman, Department of Chemistry, Kurukshetra University, who died of cardiac arrest on Monday was cremated here on Tuesday. A large number of students, teachers and non-teaching employees, including Dr M.L. Ranga, Vice-Chancellor and Mr Vineet Garg, Registrar, attended the funeral. He was a well known inorganic chemist.

REWARI
Beaten up:
The Congress legislator Capt Ajay Singh Yadav has demanded a judicial inquiry into the incident in which Tehsildar, Mr Rajbir Singh Yadav was allegedly beaten up by the Inspector and his gunman at Banipur Chowk near here, on August 8. He said though the police had registered the case no action had been taken against them.
Arrested: The Bawal police has arrested Nihal Singh, his son Dharamvir besides Sunil, Abhai Singh and Shri Bhagwan in connection with the murder of Surjan Singh a former panch of Badhrana village. A piece of land is stated to be the cause of dispute. He was allegedly beaten to death by the accused, while he was returning to the village after meeting the Deputy Commissioner. The police has registered a case against the accused.

ROHTAK
Poisoned:
Santosh, wife of Phool Singh of Jasor Kheri village in Bahadurgarh subdivision allegedly poisoned to death her daughter Manisha (14), on Sunday, according to police sources. Manisha had come to know about her mother's alleged relationship with Jagvir of Panipat. The matter was investigated by the police and the accused confessed to having committed the crime. The Bahadurgarh police has registered a case under Section 302,328,34 and 120 of the IPC. However, no arrest has been made so far.

SONEPAT
Case solved:
With the arrest of two persons, the Mohana police on Tuesday claimed to have solved the murder of Ranbir of Giwana village who had allegedly committed suicide on July 27. The body was recovered from a canal near Dulehra village under Bahadurgarh police station in Jhajjar district. The SSP, Mr K. Selvraj said the arrested, identified as Kuldeep and Sheelak Ram were brothers of the victim.
Inaugurated: Mr Harish Chander Jain, SDM, here on Tuesday inaugurated a dispensary in the lepers colony. He said Jain Milan, a social organisation, had constructed the building and opened the dispensary for the needy. The Jain Milan as well as the District Red Cross Society, would also donate medicines.
Suicide: A youth who was reeling under debt reportedly committed suicide by jumping before a train near the Railway Station here on Tuesday. According to the Railway police, the victim belonged to Almora district of Uttar Pradesh and was employed in a factory along the G.T. Road.
Theft: Four electric motors worth several thousands were stolen from a factory at Bandepur village, about 3 km from here, on Monday. Steel furniture was being manufactured in it.
Distributed: The local unit of the Viklang Sewa Samiti here on Monday distributed 120 geometry boxes among the handicapped students of various schools.
Ration cards: Residents of the city are facing hardships due to non-availability of forms for new ration cards being prepared by the Food and Supplies Department. They said the officials concerned failed to distribute the forms in many areas and alleged that the forms were being sold on the black market.

SIRSA
Body recovered:
The local police on Monday recovered the body of a middle aged person from the field of Jang Singh, a farmer of Shahanpal village in this district. The body bore injuries inflicted by a sharp-edged weapon. The police is investigating the case on a complaint lodged by Gurdev Singh, a chowkidar.
Gamblers arrested: The local police has launched a campaign against gamblers in the district. Mr B.S. Sandhu, SSP, said here on Tuesday that the CIA had conducted raids at the local Sadar Bazaar arrested Ramesh Kumar Mahajan and recovered Rs 910 from his possession. The police had also arrested eight persons under the Gambling Act and recovered Rs 5700 from them.
Auditors demand: Dr Raj Kumar Nijat, Vice-President, Audit Examination Sanghthan in a charter of demands to the Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, has urged immediate implementation of their demands. He said more than 24 members of the sanghthan had passed their promotion exams and were waiting to be promoted as senior auditors for the past three years. He said the state government had also withdrawn auditors from the Agriculture Marketing Board and Municipal Committees of the state employed since 1997 which has caused heavy loss to state government.
