Three arrested with liquor

CHANDIGARH, Dec 9 — The police has arrested three persons for possessing liquor beyond the permissible limit. According to police sources, Vinod Kumar of Palsora was arrested from the Sector 32\33 dividing road and 24 bottles were recovered from his possession.

Gian Singh of Sector 20 was nabbed from the Sector 20\21 traffic lights with 11 bottles of liquor. Surjit Singh of Badali village of Ropar was caught from the Mullanpur barrier and 12 bottles were recovered from his possession. Cases under 61\1\14 of the Excise Act have been registered against them.

Car stolen: Mr Jagdish Bains of Sector 37 reported that his car (CH-OIZ-0952) was stolen from Punjab University. A case under Section 379 of the IPC has been registered at the police station west.

Gambler held: Kuldip Singh was arrested for gambling at a public place. A case under 13-A\3\67 of the Gambling Act has been registered against him at the central police station.

Cheating: Ms Tarsem Kaur of Phase IIIB2 here has complained to the police that she was allegedly cheated by a travel agent who took Rs 1.15 lakh from her for sending her son abroad.

She said the travel agent, Ms Rajinder Kaur, had asked for Rs 1.25 lakh for sending Manjit Singh abroad. She paid Rs 1.15 lakh and her son was sent to Moscow where Ms Rajinder Kaur’s husband and son were staying.

Manjit Singh , the complainant said, stayed for 15 days in Moscow and was later taken to Ukraine where he was allegedly left to fend for himself. Her son was later arrested and sent back to India. Ms Tarsem Kaur said she had to spend about Rs 50,000 to trace her son.

A case has been registered under Section 420 and 406 of the IPC.Back



 

Campus beat
5 lakh die of cancer annually

CHANDIGARH, Dec 9 — Early detection was best suited to prolong the life span of cancer patients, said Prof S.M. Bose, Professor of Surgery, PGI, in a lecture at Panjab University here today. Awareness about the disease was a key for success in management of the disease. The lecture on 'Cancer — what we need to know' was organised by the Panjab University Teachers Association (PUTA) under its special programme for social awareness.

About five lakh persons die of cancer in the country annually. Smoking, tobacco-chewing, chemical agents, radiation, pesticides and certain diets were main causatives of the disease. The risk factor could be genetic, hormonal, social or environmental, Professor Bose said.

Change in bowel movement, urinary bladder behavior, non-healing sores, unusual bleeding and thickening or swelling in any part of the body were warning signals of the disease. Difficulty in swallowing, nagging cough, hoarseness in voice and changes in warts and moles also needed attention. Biopsy was a confirming test, which should be done at the earliest.

The lecture was followed by a question answer session. Dr Harjinder Laltu, Secretary of the PUTA, proposed the vote of thanks. Prof P.P. Arya, President of the PUTA, in his welcome address, underlined the importance of public information about common and dreaded diseases.

Results declared: The results of re-evaluation and supplementary examinations of BCom (general) second year and MA (English) part II, held in September and April, conducted by Panjab University, were declared today. Results of BCom (general) first year will be declared tomorrow. A press note issued by the Joint Controller of Examination said the results of BA and BSc (general) third year were declared on December 7. Copies of the result gazette are available at the enquiry counter on all working days.

Release of books: Two books written by Chetna Vaishvani, "Ripples" (English poetry) and "Dhadkan" (Hindi lyrics), will be released on December 11 at Lecture Theatre I, PGI, a press note said here today. Prof N.K. Oberoi from Panjab University will preside over the function.

Health camp: A one-day health camp was organised by the NSS unit of Government College of Education, Sector 20, at Kajheri village today. A team of 200 members approached the villagers to make them aware of the danger of AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases, reproductive tract infections and leprosy.Back

Dhadi concert appreciated

CHANDIGARH, Dec 9 — Punjab Sangeet Natak Akademi today organised a Dhadi gayan of Mukhtiar Zafar and his party from Zira at Punjab Kala Bhavan, Sector 16.

The programme started one hour late since the performers failed to arrive at the venue on time. But it was appreciated by the few spectators present .

Mukhtiar Singh Zafar was the lead singer of the day. He was accompanied by Saudagar Singh Sukhia on the sarangi and the other Dhads included Sukhdev Singh and Ranbir Singh Rana.Back


 


Panchkula skaters get gold

CHANDIGARH, Dec 9 — Panchkula skaters stole the show in the recently concluded 13th Sub-Junior, Junior and Senior State Roller Skating Championship at Yamunanagar. According to the President of the Roller Skating Association of Panchkula, Ms Rajni Thareja, nearly 700 skaters from eight districts of Haryana took part.

As many as 75 skaters from various schools of the city excelled in roller hockey. In sub-junior girls, junior boys and girls, and senior boys and girls, Panchkula got gold medal. In sub-junior boys, Panchkula came second.

Meanwhile, 29 skaters from different schools of Panchkula will be part of the Haryana state team, which will take part in the National Skating Championship. These are — below 6 years — boys: Mudit Gupta; girls: Aishwarya Singh; 8 to 10 years — girls: Amber; 10 to 12 years — girls: Geetika; below 14 years — boys: Gautam, Daksh, Pankaj; above 14 years — girls: Meenu Madan, Meenakshi Kohli, Priyanka, Shriya, Indu Madan, Amrita, Heena, Seema; below 14 years — girls: Rajni Vashisht, Geetika, Pallavi, Anuradha, Sulabh Aggarwal; below 10 years — girls: Karishma Ahuja, Navita Anand, Jyoshita, Renuka; below 14 years — boys: Pankaj; above 14 years — boys: Nirmal, Navdeep, Amrinder, Sudhir, Kamal.

Cycling probables: The Chandigarh Amateur Cycling Association has selected 23 probables, boys and girls, for a coaching camp in preparation for the UT team, which will take part in the National Track Cycling Championship in sub-junior, junior and senior sections, to be held at Patiala from December 16 to 21. This was stated by Mr Rakesh Mohindra, Secretary of the association.

The boys' team is: Rajesh Dalal, Amitinder Singh,Vitul Kumar, Amanjit Singh, Ankur Kaul, Rohit Sharma, Harsimran Singh, Ravgun Singh, Vaibhav, Vivek Sharma, Gurbir Singh, Siddharth Syal and Indivar Sharda. The girls' team is: Kirandeep Kaur, Pooja Thakur, Gurpreet Kaur, Monika Sharma, Chetna, Rohani Sood, Shavika Arora, Gaganpreet, Aprajita and Amandeep.

Inter-school basketball: Bhavan Vidyalaya, Sector 15, Panchkula, won the Inter-School Basketball Tournament for schools of Panchkula in under-14 boys section. In the finals played today at Blue Bird School, Bhavan Vidyalaya defeated the hosts 17-15. Mr Anurag Aggarwal, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Panchkula, gave away the prizes.

The three-day tournament saw the participation of four schools of the town. In earlier matches, Bhavan Vidyalaya beat Manav Mangal School 19-16, Blue Bird School beat DAV School, Sector 8, 26-10 and Blue Bird School beat Manav Mangal 24-16.Back

CHANDIGARH, Dec 9 — The 32nd Central Revenue Sport Meet concluded here today. Mr A.M. Prasad, Member, CBEC, New Delhi, gave away the prizes. In the two-day meet, participants from Customs and Central Excise and Income Tax departments from four sub-zones, Allahabad-Kanpur, Chandigarh-Patiala, Bhopal-Indore and Delhi-Jaipur took part.

In kabaddi, IT Delhi beat CEx, Chandigarh, 48-18. Sanjay of Customs, Delhi, was declared best athlete among men and Paramjit Kaur of Income Tax, Jaipur, was declared best athlete among women. The best marchpast trophy went to CEx Chandigarh.

In cricket, Central Excise and Customs, Chandigarh, won the meet by defeating Central Excise, Indore, by 77 runs. The Chandigarh team scored 197 runs in 35 overs, while Indore was all out for 120 runs. Chandigarh won the hockey title by beating Delhi 6-0. In football, Chandigarh defeated Narcotics (Neemuch) 1-0.

St Kabir win: St Kabir School, Sector 26, beat St Joseph's High School by 35 runs in the ICSE Schools (Chandigarh) Cricket Tournament, being played at St Xavier's Senior Secondary School, Sector 44. St Kabir were all out for 91 runs in 19.2 overs. In reply, St Joseph's were all out for 56 runs in 13.1 overs.Back
