AMRITSAR
Child labour:
The local Labour Department in collaboration with Industrial Association and Trade Union organised a seminar on Wednesday on the abolition of child labour. The consensus which emerged from the seminar urged the government to evolve a master plan to rehabilitate the children who were forced to work at an early age. The participants felt the need to create a special fund in order to provide education to such children. The Additional Deputy Commissioner said the district would soon launch a literacy drive for these children.

BATALA
Appointed:
Mr Dev Raj Chachowalia was appointed president of the local unit of the BJP by Mr Daya Singh Sodhi, President BJP state unit. The appointment of Mr Chachowalia was hailed by several local leaders.

Strike: The local Bar Association observed a strike on Wednesday in protest against the alleged misbehaviour by a Punjab Police ASI, Mr Sita Ram on Tuesday. The ASI had allegedly misbehaved with a member of the Bar Association, Mr Gurinder Singh, and had abused and threatened him.

Eye camp: A three-day eye camp organised by Maharaja Tulsidas Charitable Trust Durga Mata Mandir concluded here on Wednesday. Dr Suri Kumar, Head AC Memorial Government Eye Hospital, Gurdaspur along with a team of doctors conducted about 50 eye operations on Wednesday. Over 250 patients were examined at the camp.

GURDASPUR
Arrested:
The district police arrested Rakesh Kumar of Killa Jamalpur village on Thursday and recovered one HMT watch, Rs 300 cash and a bicycle from his possession. According to Mr Varinder Kumar, SSP, the accused had looted Naresh Kumar of Dunera Khad village on Tuesday at pistol point by using a toy pistol. A case has been registered against the accused in Sadar Pathankot police station.

KHANNA
Bail granted:
The alleged suspects in the Harjit kidnapping case, Sunil Sharma and Ravi Sharma — have been released on bail by the Additional Sessions Judge, Ludhiana, Mr M.R. Batra, on Wednesday. The next hearing of the case will be on December 14, 1999.

NAWANSHAHR
Farmers' protest:
The local activists of the Punjab Kisan Sabha and Kirti Kisan Union held a protest rally on Wednesday in front of the local Doaba Cooperative Sugar Mill. Later, they organised a protest march from the mill to the SDM office. The protesters were demanding that the sugar cane price should be fixed at Rs 110 per quintal on Haryana pattern, withdrawal of the hike in diesel prices and waiver of loans worth Rs 5700 crore given to farmers.

Medical practitioners' protest: The district unit of the Medical Practitioners Association, Punjab, organised a protest rally here on Wednesday to protest against the suicides committed by two medical practitioners — Gurmit Singh and Surinder Kumar. The protesters also blocked traffic at Chandigarh Chowk, burnt the effigy of Dr Inderjit Singh of Ludhiana and submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner. Addressing the rally Mr Ramesh Kumar Bali, General Secretary of the association said Mr Parkash Singh Badal was responsible for the suicides, as his policies had rendered about 80,000 medical practitioners unemployed.

NRI Sabha: Dr Roshan Sunkaria, Deputy Commissioner-cum-Chairman of the district unit of the NRI Sabha, while presiding over a meeting of the sabha here on Tuesday said the sabha had received 35 cases pertaining to land grabbing of the NRIs and had settled 30 cases out of them. He also said a district-level convention of NRIs would be organised on January 2, here to discuss the problems being faced by them.

PATIALA
Eye camp:
The Lions Club (Patiala Fort ), in collaboration with the Red Cross Society, district Blindness Control Society, Civil Surgeon and Eye Department of the local Rajindra Hospital will organise a free eye check-up operation and lense implant camp on December 13 at the Government Rajindra Hospital.

PHAGWARA
Office-bearers:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the local Senior Citizens Council: Patron — Mr Hansraj Chopra; President — Dr Desraj Sharma; Senior Vice-President — Mr Surinderjeet Singh; Vice-Presidents — Mr J.S.Jaswal and Mr P.S.Virdi; General Secretary — Mr H.S.Parmar; and Cashier — Mr Biharilal Narang.

Demand: Dr Hardial Singh, General Secretary of the Sikh Intellectuals Council, district Nawanshahr, in a press statement here on Thursday demanded that a welfare department should be set up for general category as the caste-based reservation policy in admissions to various courses, jobs and welfare schemes had made people belonging to the general category economically backward.

Training centre: The District Rural Development Agency under the swarn jayanti self-employment scheme has set up a training-cum-production centre at Lakhpur village in Banga block of the district. The centre which has been set up at a cost of Rs 14.9 lakh has started imparting training of football and volleyball making to as many as 40 women belonging to the Scheduled Castes. According to an official press note issued here on Thursday each trainee would be given a stipend of Rs 200 per month and after the completion of training the women would be provided raw material for making football and volleyball and would be paid Rs 9 to 18 per piece.

TARN TARAN
Gang busted:
Five members of a dacoit gang have been arrested by the Chabbal police and a case has been registered against them under Sections 399, 402, IPC. Police sources said here on Tuesday that Mr Hardev Singh, SHO, heading a police party, on a tip-off, nabbed them during a naka at Bhucher village. The arrested are Baldev Singh of Ranjit Avenue, Amritsar, Banta Singh of Gurdaspur district, Bikramjit Singh of Toot (Valtoha), Amritpal Singh and Jodha Singh. A van and two revolvers of .455 and .303 bore were seized from them.

Camp: About 300 patients were examined for various ailments and given free medicines at a medical camp organised by the Lions Club Chandigarh Greater at its multi-purpose project building at Karsan on Thursday. Free X-ray, ECG and blood testing facilities were also provided.

Function: The local chapter of the World Wide Fund for Nature — India organised a function to welcome migratory birds at Sukhna Lake on Thursday. On-the-spot painting, nature quiz and bird identification competitions were held.

Sweaters given: Girls of Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, were given sweaters by Canara Bank employees at a simple function here on Thursday. Mr K. Raghunath, General Manager of the bank, highlighted the bank’s social activities.

Protest:
Employees of the phase I branch of the State Bank of India here staged a protest on Thursday demanding a wage settlement. The Secretary of the local unit of the employees’ body, Mr Kulbir Singh, said a mass signature campaign would be launched for an early wage revision. Dharnas would be organised at all district headquarters on December 16 in support of the staff’s demands.

AMBALA
AOC-in-C's visit:
Air Marshal S.Krishnaswamy, AOC-in-C, Western Command, while addressing a gathering at Air Force Station, Ambala Cantonment, on Wednesday congratulated the IAF personnel for their contribution to a successful completion of Kargil operation. He arrived here on a three-day visit on Tuesday. He also addressed the officers and airmen during his visit.

FARIDABAD
4 girls held:
With the arrest of four girls , the police has unearthed a call-girl racket in this industrial town. The police action came in the wake of complaints from residents of the town alleging that some hotels on the Neelam Bata Road and Neelam B.K. Hospital Chowk were being used by these girls to attract customers. A police party led by Mr Ramesh Paul, SHO, Kotwali Police Station, conducted a raid and arrested four girls.

REWARI
Distributed:
The Deputy Commissioner, Mrs Sunmita Misha Singh distributed artificial limbs to 51 disabled persons and tricycles to 22 others of Rewari, Gurgaon and Jhajjar districts at a camp organised at Dharukhera on Wednesday.

SONEPAT
Robbed:
Ram Partap, a resident of Bhadana village, was robbed of Rs 4,500 by three unidentified miscreants near Kakroi village, about 10 km from here, on Wednesday night. Ram Partap was going to his village on a bicycle when the incident took place. A report in this regard has been lodged at the Sadar police station.

Demonstration: Safai workers held a demonstration in front of the office of the municipal council here on Thursday in protest against the non-payment of two-month salary. They also shouted slogans in support of their demands and sat on a day's dharna outside the municipal office.

SHIMLA
Mela:
The five-day Jorh Mela concluded at Jorh village, about 16 km from here, on Thursday. Several persons from the surrounding villages thronged the village and had a holy dip in the Jorh Ji pond. Wrestling competitions were also organised on the last day of mela.

SUNDERNAGAR
Demand:
The All-India Gramin Bank Workers' Organisation (AIGBWO) has demanded immediate suspension of the Chairman of Kapurthala-Ferozepore Gramin Bank for his alleged involvement in a corruption case. According to a press note issued by the President of the AIGBWO the Chairman of the Gramin Bank was booked for allegedly taking bribe of Rs 5,000 for sanctioning a loan. The association demanded immediate action against the suspect, who is on deputation in this bank from PNB and urged the Finance Minister to do the needful.
