GUWAHATI, Dec 19 (UNI) — Dong in Arunachal Pradesh — and not Katchal of Andaman and Nicobar islands — will welcome the first rays of the sun in the next millennium in the country. Katchal in Andaman and Nicobar may be the first land mass in the world to receive the first rays of sun in the next millennium, but going by the Indian Standard Time it is actually “Dong” in Arunachal Pradesh which will welcome the millennium in the mainland India, scientists here say.
12 die in fire
MOSCOW, Dec 19 (DPA) — At least 12 persons were killed and eight injured in a fire at a Moscow state university student dormitory early today. Seven students succumbed in a lift while trying to flee the blaze in the 13-storey building. The cause was attributed to negligent use of open flame, according to Itar-Tass news agency.

Lava images
WASHINGTON, Dec 19 (ANI) — Images of fiery lava fountain pouring out of the surface of Jupiter’s moon were recorded by NASA’s Galileo space probe. According to the US space agency, the mile high curtain of lava is inside a giant volcanic crater. The images were released at a meeting of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco.

KARACHI, Dec 19 (UNI) — Amidst reports of increased naval exercises and threatening postures by the Indian Navy in the Arabian Sea, the resource constrained Pakistan navy would surely sit proud of having acquired the first state-of-the-art vessel Agosta 90B submarine in the region. One of the three Agosta 90B submarines arrived in Pakistan’s maritime water on December 16 and the formal induction of the vessel — known as Khalid — in the navy has been planned for December 21.
Man kills 4 of family
AGRA, Dec 19 (PTI) — Driven by greed for parental property, a 35-year-old man allegedly killed his father, two younger brothers and his sister-in-law here, the police said today. Ravimohan Kulshreshtha was arrested after the four bodies were recovered from different places in the city yesterday, the police said. Kulshrestha broke down during interrogation and confessed he had killed his family members on Friday last as he had entered into an agreement with a builder to give him his father’s house valued at Rs 25 lakh for construction of a commercial complex and received an advance of Rs 1.7 lakh.
