President’s rule recommended
PANAJI, Feb 9 (PTI) — The Goa Governor, Lt-Gen J.F.R. Jacob, has sent in his recommendation to the Centre for imposition of President's rule in the state, authoritative sources said here today. The Governor made the recommendation after the Congress Ministry led by Luizinho Faleiro resigned and the entire Opposition put in a demand for fresh elections. A detailed report about the recent political developments in the state had been sent to the President by the Governor, Raj Bhavan sources said.

31 LTTE men killed
COLOMBO, Feb 9 — At least 31 LTTE rebels have been killed in fresh fighting between the security forces and the LTTE in northern Sri Lanka, while guerrillas shot dead five members of a moderate Tamil group in Vavuniya. Naval boats destroyed rebel crafts killing 13 LTTE rebels in a major sea battle off northern Jaffna coast yesterday. In two similar incidents, troops ambushed 13 guerrillas near Paranthan and Mankulam.

Fodder scam case
PATNA, Feb 9 (PTI) — The Rashtriya Janata Dal President Laloo Prasad Yadav today appeared before a designated CBI court in a conspiracy angle case of the fodder scam. The Bihar Jan Congress chief patron and former Chief Minister Jagannath Mishra, however, could not appear in the court of CBI Judge S.K. Lal as he was admitted to a hospital in Delhi.

Bangladesh strike
DHAKA, Feb 9 (UNI) — Bangladesh came under a 48-hour shut down at the call of the Opposition from today to press for resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner and a fresh election schedule for the local body municipal election set for late this month. At least one person was gunned down and many injured as supporters of the ruling Awami League and Opposition BNP exchanged fire in the capital during the strike.

Stir call called off
CALCUTTA, Feb 9 (PTI) — The West Bengal Pradesh Congress today called off its proposed statewide general strike on Friday after a meeting at the residence of PCC chief A.B.A. Ghani Khan Chowdhury. PCC Working President Priya Ranjan Dasmunshi told reporters here that the strike was called off considering that President K.R. Narayanan was scheduled to visit the city on Friday.
