BATALA
Improvement Trust:
The Punjab Government nominated six members for the local Improvement Trust on Tuesday. These members were administered the oath of secrecy in the presence of the SDM, Mr A.K. Sinha. The members are: Mr Mohan Lal, Mr Kunan Lal Kansra, Mr Kulwant Singh, Mr Dev Raj Chachowalia, Mr Sohan Lal Sharma, and Mr Sajan Singh Bajuman. The members assured the general public that their problems relating to the trust, would be solved without any delay.

Cultural evening: A cultural evening was organised on Wednesday at Dr Daulat Ram Bhalla DAV Centenary Public School, here. Mr G D Jindal, Director, Public Schools, DAV College Managing Committee, New Delhi, was the chief guest.

BATHINDA
Hepatitis-B vaccination:
After the detection of a large number of patients suffering from hepatitis-B in the district, the AIDS India Society of Rampuraphul town has started a campaign to vaccinate the residents of the district against this disease. Mr Anil Saraf, president of the society, said about 700 persons were vaccinated at a camp organised on Sunday and another such camp would be organised on February 21.

JALANDHAR
Corps of Signals:
The 88th anniversary celebrations of the Corps of Signals concluded here on Wednesday. The Chief Signal Officer, Brig R.S. Chhatwal, addressed officers, JCOs and jawans on the occasion.

Cycle expedition: The 103 Air Defence Regiment commenced its golden jubilee celebrations by flagging off a cycle expedition, somewhere in the Western sector. Brig A.K. Verma, Commander, 715 (Independent) Air Defence Brigade, flagged off the expedition, which will pass through the states of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. The expedition will conclude at Nasik.

LUDHIANA
Forgery:
A senior clerk in the office of the SDM, Payal, has been arrested for forging affidavits the using signatures and seal of the Executive Magistrate. The accused, Nirmal Singh Jandi, has also been charged with impersonating as a clerk in the D.C.'s office. He was involved in forging affidavits for the transfer of vehicles, recording of DDRs for obtaining duplicate papers and registration of new vehicles in the DTO office.

NAWANSHAHR
Annual plan:
Capt Kanwaljit Singh, Punjab Finance Minister, said on Wednesday that the Badal government, with a view to boosting the all round development of the state, had implemented an annual plan of Rs 2,665 crore. He was presiding over the prize distribution function at the Government High School, Bachchori. He said the government, during its two years governance, had completed major development projects. He especially mentioned the Ranjit Sagar Dam Project in this regard.

Association:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the Green Park Colony Welfare Association (Jhill road) here: chairman — Mr Nasib Singh; president — Mr Kirpal Singh; general secretary — Mr Piara Lal; senior vice-president — Mr Gurcharan Singh; and finance secretary — Mr Ram Nath Raman.

Check up camp: The Dedicated Brothers group will organise 123rd free health check-up-cum-awareness camp on February 21. Medicines would be distributed free of cost at the camp. The camp would be held at Daffodils Public School here.

Kar seva: The local Aggarwal Sabha has decided to send two buses from here to participate in kar seva at the Durgiana Temple in Amritsar on February 21.

Free eye camp: The local Lions Club (Fort) will organise a free eye check-up and operation camp at Sheel village on February 21, according to a press release of the club here on Wednesday.

Function: The local Ram Kali Devi Welfare Handicapped Seva Society organised a sports function at the local Ram Kali Devi school for Deaf and Dumb. Mr Joginder Singh Khandari distributed mementoes to the winners, while Mr Gurcharan Singh donated Rs 5,100 to the society.

Sainik sammelan: The No 1 Armoured Division Signal Regiment, popularly known as the Airawat Signals, hosted a special sainik sammelan and cultural function to mark the week-long 88th anniversary celebrations of the corps. Col K.D. Arya, Commanding Officer of the regiment, conveyed best wishes to the officers and men of the corps.

Case registered:
A case under Section 304 of the IPC has been registered against Boota Singh, a resident of Pahuwind village, on Tuesday. Boota Singh was getting illegal power-supply through a kundi connection. This resulted in the death of Paramjit Kaur (5), daughter of his neighbour Sukhbir Singh, when she accidentally came in contact with the wire.

Opium seized: The Bhikhiwind police has seized 500 gram opium from Balbir Singh, a resident of Patti, from a naka near Sursingh village on Tuesday and a case under Sections 18, 61 and 85 NDPS Act has been registered.

Foundation Day: The northern region office of the Bureau of Indian Standards celebrated its foundation day on Wednesday where various events, including competitions in sport, were organised. Milan Kumar, S.K. Madan, S. Basu, Seema Chawla and Susheela Parsad were among the winners. Mr D.R. Kohli, Deputy Director-General (North) BIS, gave away the prizes.

Elected: Mr Gurmukh Singh Sethi has been elected President of the Sector 35-D Market Welfare Association.

Delegation: A delegation of Maloya residents met the Chief Engineer on Thursday and apprised him of their problems. Mr B S Jandiala, president of the Maloya Colony Welfare Association, said the road in the village were in bad shape and the parks in a state of disrepair. The sewerage system too had collapsed with the result that the gutters were overflowing in the village.

Funeral: Hundreds of persons participated in the funeral procession of Darshan Singh Mauji, central pracharak of the Sant Nirankari Mission here on Thursday. The 75-year-old Mauji from Kanpur, who was on a tour of the region, died at Dharamsala on Wednesday.

Blood donation: As many as 110 people donated blood in a camp organised by the Punjab Education Board Employees Association, here on Thursday. The camp was held in the memory of trade union, the late Kartar Singh Ranu. Dr Jasbir Singh Ahluwalia, Chairman of the board, inaugurated the camp. Mrs Jagir Kaur, Minister for Tourism and Cultural Affairs of Punjab, distributed gold medals to the wards of board employees who had attained top three positions in the middle, tenth and twelfth standard examinations during the previous session.

FARIDABAD
Woman murdered:
Sudesh Khanna, an old woman living in Sector 14 here, was stabbed to death on Tuesday by some unidentified persons. Except for a colour TV set nothing else was reported to be missing from the house of the deceased. The jewellery worn by the deceased was also intact. There was a scuffle between the victim and the assailant which was evident from a bunch of hair found in her hands.

Gas leakage: Panic gripped the Neelam-Bata road on Tuesday when chlorine gas started leaking from a cylinder at the thermal plant. Two personnel of the Fire Department, Mr Prem Chandra Sharma and Mr Bhajan Lal became unconscious while closing the valve of the leaking cylinder.

Open darbar:
The Additional Deputy Commissioner, Mr Sudhir Rajpal, chaired an open darbar at John Hall here on Wednesday. Most of the cases were settled on the spot and the departments concerned were instructed to take time-bound decisions in the remaining cases.

Chickenpox vaccine: Resentment prevails among residents of Nuh town against the district administration for not providing medicines at the General Hospital there. According to the residents the chickenpox vaccine was not available at the hospital at a time when the disease had affected many children in the town.

Case registered: The Punhana police has registered a case of attempt to murder against five persons. Mohamad Usman, a resident of Naigaon had lodged an FIR against five persons for allegedly attacking his family members.

KAITHAL
Prohibitory orders:
The District Magistrate Mrs Jaiwanti Sheokand, through an order promulgated under Section 144 of the Cr P C has banned the gathering of five or more persons and the carrying of weapons in the premises of schools and other educational institutions and in the area of 200 metres around the examination centres in the district. The orders will remain in force till March 27.

REWARI
Convicted:
Dr S K Kapoor, Additional Sessions Judge, has sentenced Babu Lal, Raju and Chhanga, to five years rigorous imprisonment and fined them Rs 10,000 each for attacking and causing grievous injuries to plaintiff Kartar Singh. According to the prosecution Kartar Singh was attacked by the accused on September 23,1995.

SONEPAT
Urged:
The district unit of the HUDA Public Health Karamchari Union on Wednesday urged the state government to order the immediate suspension of two senior HUDA officers presently posted at Hisar for their involvement in a case of harassing their subordinates.

Resentment: Resentment prevails among the residents of Kharkhauda town and its adjoining villages against the alleged black-marketing of kerosene by certain depot-holders in the area. Many residents alleged that the officers concerned were in league with the unscrupulous depot-holders.

SIRSA
Procession:
Members of the local Haryana Red Flag Labour Union, held a procession that ended in front of the Deputy Commissioner's residence here on Wednesday. Speaking on this occasion, Mr Atar Singh alleged that the labourers working in brickkilns were being victimised and were not being paid adequate compensation. He demanded that their wages should be increased, failing which they would be forced to go on strike. A charter of demands was also handed over to the authorities.

Run over: Deep Singh, a jeep driver of Landhari village in Hisar district was arrested by the Sirsa police on Wednesday on the charge of rash and negligent driving. According to sources, Anit, daughter of Guddar Singh of Bihar, was run over by the jeep driven by the accused on February 12 on the Hisar road.

Competition held: Essay and painting contests on safe use of LPG were organised by Bharat Petroleum at the local GRG School on Wednesday. Students of various educational institutions participated. Shevata Malik of Maharaja Agrasein School and Navjot Sandhu of GRG School stood first in the essay and painting competitions respectively.

Generator donated: Mr Lalman, a philanthropist, donated an 8 kv power generator to Krishan Goushala at Kalanwali on Wednesday. Mr Naresh Maheshveri, Secretary of the "goushala" said that he had also donated fodder worth Rs 8,000 to the "goushala" on "Makar Sakranti".

BILASPUR
Condemned:
Led by a former Health Minister, Mr Ram Lal Thakur, as many as 100 Congress activists, held a rally and later presented a memorandum to the Governor through the Deputy Commissioner here on Tuesday. They condemned the increase in the prices of essential commodities, including rice, wheat, sugar, fertiliser, LPG and electricity and said that law and order situation the district was deteriorating day-by-day. They alleged that Congress leaders and activists were being involved in false cases.

SHIMLA
Appointed:
Capt J.L. Manta (Retd) has been appointed president of the Ex-Servicemen Congress for the district. He was appointed on Wednesday by Col S.C. Sharma, who asked Mr Manta to recommend names of other office-bearers for the district committee.

Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Labour Officers and Inspectors Association, HP Labour Department: president — Mr Ranbir Sipahiya; vice-presidents — Mr J.S. Negi and Mr R.P. Sharma; and general secretary — Mr Padam Dev Sharma.

SOLAN
Houses for homeless:
The vice-chairman of 20 Point Programme Implementation Committee, Mr Karam Dev Dharmani, said here on Wednesday that current year's target of providing 4879 houses to the homeless would be achieved by the end of this month. He said Rs 75 lakh had so far been spent on providing aid to 296 families living below the poverty line.
