FAZILKA
Shop burgled: Thieves entered the showroom of M/s Chaman Lal Sushil Kumar at the Gaushalla a road on Friday and reportedly took away watches.

JALANDHAR
Arrested:
Raj Kumar, a clerk at the passport office here, was caught red-handed while allegedly accepting a bribe from Gurbachan Kaur of Wadala village in this district on Saturday. The police has registered a case.

KHARAR
Grant:
Ms Satwinder Kaur Dhaliwal, MP, Ropar, announced a grant of Rs 1 lakh from the MP Area Development Fund for the local Bar Association on Saturday. She announced this while attending a meeting of the association.

LUDHIANA
Seminar:
Dr G.P. Chander, Civil Surgeon, Ludhiana, organised a district-level seminar on "Pre-natal Diagnostic Techniques Act, 1994" here on Saturday. Dr P.S. Jassi, Director, Health and Family Welfare, inaugurated the seminar. He said there was a drastic fall in Punjab's sex ratio because ultrasonic machines were being used to determine sex of a child. This had created a serious situation.

PATIALA
Society:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the Bhindian Street Welfare Society: president — Mr Jaidev Singh; vice-president — Mr Pardeep Mittal; secretary — Mr T.M.Sayal; and treasurer — Mr Vijay Khanna.

Urged: The Punjab Medical Officers and Para Medical Staff Association of the PSEB has urged the board's Chairman to take steps against those employees who had constructed their house after obtaining loan from the board but staying in board accommodation. This was stated in a press note of the association here on Friday.

Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the district unit of the Deputy Commissioner Karamchari Association: president — Mr Harminder Singh Rana; Senior vice-president — Mr Harpreet Singh; general secretary — Mr Gurmail Singh Sohi; treasurer — Ms Balbir Kaur; and secretary — Mr Gurpreet Singh.

Programme: The National Theatre Arts Society organised a devotional congregation "Sarb Dharam Sai Sankirtan" here to promote brotherhood, national integration and spreading message of world peace, according to a press note of the society here on Friday.

Training programme: A training programme for teachers educating mentally handicapped children concluded here on Saturday at the Navjivini School of Special Education. As many as 22 teachers from different states participated. Dr N.S. Sodhi, Secretary, of the school, said the school had been selected by the Rehabilitation Council of India for imparting training to the mentally disabled children.

ROPAR
Strike call:
On call given by the Punjab Photographers Association, photographers in the state will observe a two-day strike on February 22 and 23 in protest against the imposition of sales tax by the State Government, according to a spokesman of the association here.

Declamation contest: As part of the World Consumer Day celebrations, the Consumer Forum of Chandigarh will organise a declamation contest on “Citizens charter” at Government College, Sector 46, on February 23. Three merit prizes and a consolation prize will be given.

World Thinking Day: The Bharat Scouts and Guides will observe World Thinking Day on February 22 at Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Sector 20. The programme will be presided over by Mrs Anuradha Gupta, President of the association.

PANCHKULA
Medical camp: A medical camp was organised at the General Hospital here on Sunday. As many as 100 diabetics were examined at the camp conducted by Dr Malik and Dr Bansal.

Family welfare camp: The Lioness and Lions Clubs of Panchkula Central organised a family welfare camp at Primary Health Centre, Pinjore, near here on Saturday. As many as 20 operations were performed during the camp.

Condemned: The local MLA, Mr Chander Mohan, has condemned the move of the city Administration and the Haryana Urban Development Authority to demolish unauthorised structures in Sector 21 here on Saturday. He has sought rehabilitation of the affected persons.

Criticised: The Confederation of Housing Societies of Haryana, Punjab and Chandigarh, has criticised the decision of the Haryana Government to acquire several acres near Mansa Devi. A spokesman of the confederation said the decision was anti-public, as the common man cannot afford the expensive plots auctioned by HUDA.

ZIRAKPUR
Eye camp:
The Bhabbat Gram Panchayat will organise an eye operation camp at Dharamsala village on March 13. It is the 27th annual eye camp being organised by this panchayat. According to the Sarpanch, Mr Dharm Singh, the Panchayat will provide spectacles, food and medicines to poor and needy patients, free of cost

AMBALA
Three killed: Three persons were killed in two road accidents on Friday. Darshana Rani and Sunny were killed when the rickshaw in which they were travelling was hit by a four-wheeler near Hari Palace in the city. A case has been registered. In another accident, Mr Kuldeep Singh of Zafarpur village was killed when the three-wheeler in which he was travelling was hit by a Tata Sumo near Duliani village.

HISAR
Agriculture workshop:
The Department of Agriculture, Haryana, and scientists of CCS Haryana Agriculture University will hold a three-day workshop on the university campus from March 5. According to Dr R Yamdagni, Director of Extension Education, the participants would inspect the rabi crop grown at research farm of the university . Prof J.B.Chowdhury, Vice- Chancellor, will inaugurate the workshop.

Horticulture prize: The Horticulture Department of CCS Haryana Agricultural University has won the first prize at the Ninth Horticultural Show organised by the Government of Andhra Pradesh at Hyderabad recently. According to Dr N.R.Godara, Professor and Head, Department of Horticulture of the university, the department exhibited varieties of sweet orange, lemon mandarin and narangi ( hill mandarin).

Girl abducted:
A minor Dalit girl of Lahli village was allegedly abducted by a youth of the same village, near Kalanaur town, in this district on February 15. According to a complaint of girl's father , the police has booked a case under Sections 363, and 366 of the IPC.

SHAHABAD
Five killed:
Three persons of a family belonging to Ludhiana were killed in a road accident near a local petrol pump on the GT Road here on Saturday. In another accident, two persons travelling in a Delhi-bound tourist bus were killed in a head-on-collision between the bus and a tanker near Ratangarh village, 3 km from here, on Saturday. Four other occupants of the bus were injured and admitted to the Civil Hospital.

Blood donation camp: As many as 68 units of blood were collected in a blood donation camp organised here on Saturday by the local branch of the State Bank of Patiala and the local unit of Bharat Vikas Parishad. The camp was inaugurated by Mr J P Kaushik, Managing Director, Cooperative Sugar Mill, Shahabad.

SIRSA
Lok Adalat:
As many as 267 of the 409 cases were settled in a Lok Adalat held at Judicial Complex here on Friday, according to Mr B. Diwakar, Chief Judicial Magistrate.

Child killed: Suman (6), a daughter of Dharma of Kagdana village in this district was crushed to death by a jeep near the village. The police has registered a case against the jeep driver on a complaint of her father.

BILASPUR
Campaign:
Himachal Pradesh State Cooperative Bank has decided to start a campaign against fake finance companies which are operating in the state and are allegedly looting people by misleading them, Mr Krishan Kumar Kaushal, Chairman of the bank, said here on Sunday. He said the bank would opened new branches at Suharghat, Kandraura, Kalol, Bamm, Ladraur, Trifalghat and Bhakra in the district during this financial year.

CHAMBA
Inquiry ordered:
The state Forest Department has ordered an inquiry into a scandal of illegal felling of trees which was reported in the Tundah forests in Bharmour subdivision of this district last week.

SOLAN
Charas seized:
The Saproon police arrested Mahesh Chand and seized 320 grams of charas from his possession on Saturday.

Envoy's visit: The Ambassador of the Lao People's Democratic Republic to India, Mr Kideng Thammavong, will arrive here on February 24 on the invitation of the Indo-Lao Friendship Society, Haryana. Mr I.D. Verma, Secretary-General of the society, said here on Sunday that the envoy would visit Kundli Murthal and Khewra village.

Attack Condemned: The Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board Junior Engineers Association has condemned the attack on Mr Prem Paul, Junior Engineer, posted at Arki in this district. The association held a meeting here on Saturday and demanded an action against the culprits.
