CAT’s purview widened
NEW DELHI, Jan 19 (PTI) — The ambit of the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT), dealing with cases of Central Government employees, has been extended to 29 more government institutions. These 29 institutions came under the purview of the CAT on January 1 this year following a notification issued by the Ministry of Personnel last month. The CAT, which has 17 benches all over the country, was earlier hearing cases pertaining to nine Central Government departments.

Yeltsin better
MOSCOW, Jan 19 (AP) — A hospitalised Boris Yeltsin was today feeling better, but doctors want to conduct more tests to determine whether he will need surgery to repair his bleeding ulcer. Sergei Mironov, his chief doctor, said the President wasn't expected to leave the hospital for two weeks to three weeks, and won't be allowed to travel for up to three months, Itar-Tass news agency reported. Mr Yeltsin was hospitalised on Sunday.

Tornado kills 21
MOUNT AYLIFF, SOUTH AFRICA, Jan 19 (PTI) — At least 21 persons were killed when a tornado hit the rural areas around the small town of Mount Ayliff in South Africa's eastern Cape province, the police said today. About 25 persons had been admitted to the Mount Ayliff hospital after the tornado struck last afternoon. The other injured had been transferred to hospitals in the neighbouring Kwazulu Natal province.

4 Jamaat men shot
KARACHI, Jan 19 (DPA) — Four members of the Muslim fundamentalist Jammat-i-Islamai party were shot dead and three were wounded when gunmen attacked their house in a village near Shikarpur town in southern Pakistan's Sindh province, reports said today. The incident resulted in the deaths of three brothers and a son of one of the brothers, villagers said.

Dalit houses burnt
MUNGER, Jan 19 (PTI) — Armed miscreants set ablaze a tiny Dalit hamlet in Bihar's Munger district and drove away its 100-odd inhabitants late last night, the police said today. At least six persons were injured in the attack on Laliya bundh, which followed a prolonged dispute over a piece of government land, Munger Deputy Superintendent of Police Amarjeet Balihar said. The Dalits had constructed jhuggis on vacant government land and applied for houses under the Indira Awaas Yojna.
