Price Watch
Mango prices going up
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, July 23 —The price of mango has started going up in the local market during the past two days.

During a survey of the market it was found that if a kg of 'dasheri' variety of mango was priced between Rs 20 and Rs 25 just two days back, it was available at Rs 30 to Rs 35 per kg today. The wholesale price of the fruit has increased from Rs 120 to Rs 150 per 7 kg pack. The price of 'kupi' variety of mango has also increased from Rs 20 to Rs 25 per kg in retail and from Rs 130 to Rs 160 per 8 kg pack. There was no change in the price of the juicy 'langra' variety as one could still purchase it for Rs 25 a kg in retail and for Rs 135 per 7 kg pack in the wholesale market.

The hike was attributed to shrinking arrivals of the fruit from Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra. "The problem is that the mango crop is almost over in these two states. The price is likely to go up further," predicted Mr Sham Monga, a trader.

'Jamun' is another fruit which has recorded a major jump in its price. A kg of the fruit priced at Rs 60 two days back, could be relished today for Rs 80 in retail.

On the other hand 'mausambi' has started coming within the reach of the common people owing to more arrivals of fresh crop in the market from Maharashtra. A dozen of the fruit, priced at Rs 80 just two days back, could be purchased today for Rs 50. The wholesale price of the fruit has come down from Rs 180 per 3 dozens to Rs 135 per 3 dozen. Traders predicted that the price was bound to decrease as arrivals were likely to pick up during the next week.

The prices of most fruits remained stable during this period. A kg of grapes were still priced at Rs 80 in retail and at Rs 125 per 2 kg pack in the wholesale market. Similarly, plum could be purchased at its old price of Rs 40 a kg and Rs 180 for a 6 kg pack. One could buy royal variety of apple between Rs 40 and Rs 50 a kg in the retail market.

There was no change in the price of papaya and banana as these could be purchased for Rs 20 a kg and Rs 20 a dozen, respectively.
