Medical camp:
The Bharat Vikas Parishad, (BVP) Batala will organise a free medical skin disease camp on Sunday, at the community hall near Khajuri Gate, according to Mr K.N Sharma, Secretary of the BVP. He disclosed that the team of doctors be led by Dr Rakesh Bharti, Deputy Medical Commissioner, Punjab Health System Corporation, Amritsar, and Dr Ravi Saini, senior resident doctor, Skin Department, Government Medical College, Amritsar, will examine the patients.

FEROZEPORE
Caught:
Dr Hardial Singh Gill of the Civil Hospital, Baghapurana in the Moga district was caught red handed by the DSP (Vigilance), Mr Saroop Singh, for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 2,000 from Mr Gurnam Singh, a resident of Ladneke village. According to Mr Hardial Singh Mann, SP, the doctor had accepted the bribe for giving evidence in a case pending before the court. The same doctor had, earlier, issued a medico legal report in the case, he added.

GARHSHANKAR
Shot at:
Surjit Singh, ASI, Punjab police posted in Ludhiana allegedly shot at Gurmej Kaur the wife of his brother, Balbir Singh at Thuana village, 10 km from here. The cause is stated to be a land dispute. A case has been registered against the accused at Mahilpur police station. The victim was admitted to DMC Hospital, Ludhiana. The accused is at large.

MOGA
Inquiry ordered:
The Deputy Commissioner, Moga, has ordered a magisterial inquiry against Jang Singh, Sub-Inspector, posted at Baghapurana police station. A case under Sections 16/38 of the IPC was registered against him on Friday. He had allegedly manhandled a retired army personnel at Alamkalan village three days ago under the influence of liquor.

Appointed: Mr Satinder Sharma, a member of the Moga Bar Association, has been appointed Chairman of the legal cell of the Punjab Pradesh Youth Congress.

NAWANSHAHR
Tribute to martyrs:
The National Youth Association, Banga, organised a programme, 'Pranam Shaheedan Nu', on Wednesday to pay tributes to the Kargil martyrs. Mr Charanjit Singh Atwal, Speaker, Punjab Assembly presided over the function. He also inaugurated a free ambulance service started by the association to help needy patients.

Harassed subscribers: A number of telephone subscribers here, have complained of poor service and harassment by the Telecom Department. The subscribers complained that the department had changed the dates of issuance and remittance of the telephone bill without giving prior information to the public. One subscriber, Mr Joginder Singh, a disabled soldier, said he had to visit the billing section of the department several times to get a duplicate bill, as he had not received the original.

Appointed: Mr Surinder Paul Singh has been appointed President of the Gobindgarh Steel Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mandi Gobindgarh, its Executive Officer disclosed here on Thursday.

SANGRUR
Police custody:
Mr Manohar Singh, Inspector, Weights and Measures Department, has been remanded to the police custody by a Judicial court till July 23. He was caught red handed by Mr Mandeep Singh, DSP, (Vigilance) on July 19, while accepting a bribe of Rs 5000 from a petroleum dealer.

Suicide: Two youths of the area committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance on Wednesday. The deceased have been identified as Jaswant Singh (25), a resident of Bharowal and Raju of Khawaspur village.top

Dharna staged: Five trade unions, namely CITU, AITUC, INTUC, BMS and HMS, staged a joint protest dharna in front of the office of the Assistant Labour Commissioner, here on Friday, to press for their demands. The organisations are demanding implementation of labour laws, upward revision of minimum wages, abolition of contract labour system and alleged anti-working class policies being adopted by employers. Workers participated in the dharna in large numbers.

Memorandum given: A delegation of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, led by its President, Mr Satinder Singh, met the Adviser to the Administrator and submitted a memorandum and demanded that the special drive started by the police to round up persons should be stopped immediately. The Advisor assured the delegation that she would look into the matter and do the needful.

Club meeting: The Lions Club Chandigarh Plaza is holding its general meeting and induction ceremony at a Sector 35 hotel on Saturday at 8.30 p.m. Mr Janak Gupta, the past district governor, will the chief guest. There will be a discussion on illiteracy and family planning project, to be taken up by the club for the year 1999-2000.

Programme organised: A cultural programme in memory of Kargil martyrs was jointly organised by the Maloya Colony Welfare Association and the Shiromani Punjabi Likhari Sabha Punjab at Maloya Colony here on Saturday. On this occasion, a draft for Rs 15,000 was handed over to Mr Ashish Kundra, the SDM (South), who was the chief guest, for the welfare of the families of martyrs. The gathering was addressed by Babu Singh Jandiala, President of the association.

Project day: The Annual Project Day of Bhavan Vidyalaya, Sector 15 here is being celebrated on Saturday from 9 a.m to 1 p.m. The programme on the day is titled as 'Towards a better tomorrow'. The chief guest on the occasion will be Mr Alok Mittal, SP of Panchkula.

Award presented:
Dr Indur Grover, Professor and Head, Department of Home Science, Extension Education College of Home Science, CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar, has bagged the Extension Scientist Award (1996-98). The award was conferred on her by Mr Sompal, Minister of State for Agriculture and Water Resource, at Vigyan Bhavan, Delhi recently.

Workers association: The following have been elected office-bearers of the local branch of All India Telegraph Engineering Workers Association (Line Staff and Group-D): President — Mr Karnail Chand; Vice-President Mr Ram Avtar Singh; Secretary — Mr Devidayal; and Treasurer Mr Jaipal.

Medal instituted: Guru Jambheshar University has instituted a Ruchi Sikri memorial medal in memory of Ruchi Sikhri, a student of the university. She died in a road accident on December 14, 1998.

KAITHAL
Spurious fertilisers:
The police has registered a case under Sections 7/10/85 of the Essential Commodities Act, against three partners, as well as, against a firm manufacturing zinc sulphate. According to an FIR lodged the police by the Deputy Director of Agriculture, Mr B.S Saini, the accused were running a partnership firm and selling the spurious zinc sulphate manufactured by a firm of Hisar. Samples taken by the officials were sent to the quality control laboratory, Faridabad, and the report revealed that the samples contained no zinc sulphate in it as against the requirement of 21 per cent.

SIRSA
Electrocuted:
Sher Singh, a resident of Rania village 20 km from here, was electrocuted on Thursday. He died on the spot.

Suicide: Ram Bilas of Dhani village committed suicide after administering poison to his son on Thursday. The bodies of Ram Bilas and his son were cremated after post-mortem.

SONEPAT
Medical assistance:
The Haryana Accredited Press Reporters Union on Friday expressed concern over the deteriorating health of its President, Dr Shanti Swaroop Sharma, and urged the state government to provide medical and financial assistance to him.

Database:
Environmentalist and medical plant expert, Dr Arun Chandan, has urged the Chief Minister, Mr Prem Kumar Dhumal, to take steps to save the herbal wealth of state from west. He regretted that the lax attitude of the government had resulted in patenting of Rose apple, Bitter gourd and Brinjal by some Americans. Dr Chandan, in a press note appealed to the CM, to get a database of herbal plants and traditional medicinal practices of Himachal prepared by the Department of Ayurveda at the earliest. He demanded that the local herbs and their products, be declared a national property to ward off the threat. According to him compilation of a database of traditional practices will help in bringing farmers and traditional practitioners in the national mainstream.
