ABOHAR
Remand
: The local court remanded Sajjan Singh and Gurmeet Singh in judicial custody on Wednesday on a charge of smuggling poppy husk from Rajasthan. They were arrested by the Sadar police.

Case registered: The police registered a case under Sections 376, 452, 34, IPC, on Wednesday against three persons for alleged gangrape of a woman who had come to meet her brother a Dhanishaff, near here. No arrest has been made so far.

AMRITSAR
Convocation
: The convocation and prize distribution function of the local DAV College of Education for Women was held here on Wednesday. The Vice-President of the DAV Management Committee, Mr R.S. Sharma, called upon the teachers to work diligently to justify their role as nation builders. Later, the Principal, Dr K.K. Gupta, conferred degrees on 325 graduates and postgraduate students.

FATEHGARH SAHIB
Appointments:
The appointments of the district presidents of the Youth Akali Dal, Tohra faction, will be made on June 10, according to a press note issued here on Thursday by Mr Jaswant Singh, Press Secretary, of the dal.

GURDASPUR
Suicide:
Mamta (17) of Kazipur Mohalla, Pathankot and Vinod Kumar (20) of Bhanguri village, near Pathankot, reportedly committed suicide by consuming poison on Wednesday. In another case, Inderjit Singh was killed and his brother, Iqbal Singh, was injured when the motorcycle on which they were travelling rammed into a standing truck near Kataru Chak village on Wednesday. The deceased was a resident of Saili Kullian, Pathankot.

CM's visit: Mr Prakash Singh Badal, Chief Minister, will visit the border areas in this district on June 5 to distribute Rs 1.05 crore among the farmers whose land is lying beyond border fencing. The distribution will be in the form of compensation at a rate of Rs 3,000 per acre per year.

Funds distributed: As many as 112 ex-Army officials were provided employment in private sector during last year. Mr Husan Lal, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue), said this while presiding at a meeting of the district Sainik Welfare Board in Panchayat Bhavan, here on Wednesday.

HOSHIARPUR
Dharna
: Members of the Tehsil Revenue Patwar Union held a dharna in front of the tehsil complex on Wednesday in support of their demands. Mr Shivdarshan Singh, General Secretary of the district unit of the union, criticised the SAD-BJP government for its anti-employee attitude.

NAWANSHAHR
Demonstration
: Members of the district unit of the Medical Practitioners Association, Punjab, led by Dr Ramesh Kumar Bali, state General Secretary, held a demonstration against the Punjab Government on Wednesday. They were protesting against the lathi-charge on medical practitioners on May 24 at Chandigarh.

Rally: Members of the BSP, led by Mr Harbhajan Lakha, a former MP, organised a rally in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office on Wednesday in protest against the alleged atrocities committed on Dalits at Jethukmazawra village. They submitted a memorandum to the DC to forward to the Governor, Punjab, and demanded arrest of culprits.

PATIALA
Bank official held
: The local Vigilance Bureau has registered a case under the Anti-Corruption Act against Shwinder Singh, Field Officer, State Bank of Patiala, Bhadson. According to a press note of the bureau, he was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 2,000 for sanctioning a house building loan.

Call for rally: The local unit of the Punjab and U T Employees Joint Action Committee will stage a rally on Friday in protest against the hike in house rent by the Punjab Government, according to Mr Darshan Singh Labana, General Secretary of the committee.

Rally proposed: The kisan wing of the SAD( Amritsar) will stage a rally on June 17 in front of the PSEB office here in protest against the non-acceptance of its demands. Mr Satnam Singh Behru, President of the wing, said farmers demanded 24-hour single phase supply in rural area, a 14-hour regular supply for paddy sowing and tubewell connections to farmers waiting since 1985.

Camp: A free ayurvedic camp was organised at Government Ayurvedic Hospital in which as many as 350 patients were treated. The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Jasbir Singh Bir, inaugurated the camp and announced a grant of Rs 50,000 for the hospital.

PHAGWARA
Five held:
The police has arrested five persons and claimed to have solved many robbery cases. The DSP, Mr P. Singh, said here on Thursday that two pistols and two scooters had been recovered from them. The accused are identified as Rasbir Singh, Gurvinder Singh, Lal Bahadur, Kamaljit Singh and Lakhwinder Singh. A case under the Arms Act has been registered against them.

PHILLAUR
YC rallies:
The Punjab Youth Congress will organise as many as 18 rallies in the state from June 13 to July 4 to expose corrupt, selfish and anti-people policies of the SAD-BJP government. This was announced here on Wednesday by the Punjab Youth Congress President, Mr Davinder Singh Babboo.

Elected: Mr Rohit Sood Bambi has been elected the President of the Market Welfare Association, Sector 37-C, for two years, according to a press note.

Office-bearers: The following have been elected the office-bearers of the Welfare Association of Housing Board Colony (Aman Colony), Dhanas: President — Mr Kalyan Chand Rana; Vice-President — Mr Bahadur Lal; General Secretary — Mr Raj Kumar Dogra; Joint Secretary — Mr Pyare Lal; Propaganda Secretary — Mr Sobha Raj; and Treasurer — Mr Raj Mal Thakur.

Resigned: Mrs Radha Rani, General Secretary of the local unit of the Mahila Nyaya Morcha and the Samajwadi Janata Party, on Thursday resigned from the party and joined the Congress.

Voluntary disclosure: Mr Joginder Singh Bhogal, a former member of the Local Advisory Committee, on Thursday urged the Adviser to the Administrator, Mrs Vineeta Rai, to extend the Voluntary Disclosure Scheme to industrial consumers also, so as to regulate their power load and ensure that action was taken against those who drew power beyond their sanctioned load.

PANCHKULA
Relief sought: The Zila Patarkar Parishad has urged the Chief Minister, Mr Bansi Lal, to provide a financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh to the bereaved family of Jansatta reporter Varinder Sachdeva who died in a road accident. The President of the parishad, Mr S.D.Sharma, said a CBI inquiry should be conducted into circumstances leading to the death of the journalist. The parishad mourned the death of the scribe.

Seminar: A seminar on "Who is responsible for mid-term poll" is being organised by the local Press Club here on June 5. The state Parliamentary Minister, Mr Attar Singh Saini, would be the chief guest. A former Member of Parliament, Mr Satya Pal Jain, and a member of the Rajya Sabha, Mr Lachman Singh, would also participate in the seminar.top

Trader robbed:
Three miscreants snatched Rs 45,000 from Vinod Kumar, a trader, at gunpoint at Meham town, 30 km from here, on Wednesday. The police has booked a case under Section 392 of the IPC.

SIRSA
Corruption case:
The State Vigilance Bureau has registered a case of corruption against the manager and staff of Dabwali branch of Land Development Bank. According to police sources, a case under Sections 420, 467, 468, 471 and 120-B, IPC, has been registered against the 10 employees of the bank, including a former manager, for allegedly sanctioning loans.

SONEPAT
Case registered:
The police has registered a case against two persons of Rampur Kundal village in connection with the alleged murder of Poonam, whose body was found near the cremation ground of the village three days ago. However, no arrest has been made so far.

Dharna:An indefinite dharna launched by the HUDA Public Health Karamchari Union, in front of the HUDA office, entered the fourth day on Thursday. A large number of employees raised slogans against the local authorities and the state government.top

BILASPUR
Seeds distribution:
Improved quality of seed maize has been distributed among the three development blocks of this district, said the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Ramesh Kapil, here on Wednesday. He said officials of the Agriculture Department had been directed to maintain timely supply of seeds and fertilisers in the district. He said under the backward area sub-plan, Dalits and poor families were being provided seeds at 50 per cent subsidy.

Traffic control measures:In order to control vehicular traffic, the Deputy Commissioner has banned the movement of vehicles in main market and Gandhi Market here from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Contest results: Shagun Gupta of Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Bilaspur, Anil of Government Senior Secondary School, Jhandutta, and Suresh Kumar of Government Senior Secondary School, Barthin, were declared first, second and third, respectively, in the district-level poster painting competition held by the Health and Family Welfare Department on "Tobacco prohibition" here on Tuesday. In a slogan writing competition Ajay Kumar Thakur of Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Ghumarwi, Anukampa Thakur of Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Bilaspur, and Vibhore Sharma of Government Boys Senior Secondary School, Bilaspur, won first, second and third positions, respectively.

KASUMPATI
Assurance:
The Krishak Sangharsh Samiti of 59 villages adjoining Shimla thanked the government for giving an assurance regarding the merging of these villages into the Shimla Municipal Corporation. A delegation of farmers from the Kasumpati constituency met the Chief Minister who assured them, says a samiti spokesman on Thursday.

NURPUR
Threat:
The Himachal Pradesh Roadways Transport Corporation Employees Federation has criticised the HRTC management for its failure to regularise the services of the ad-hoc workers who had completed 12-year of service. Mr Rajnesh Sharma, state General Secretary of the federation, has threatened to launch an agitation in case their demand was not accepted.

Shop gutted: A shop of Rajinder Kumar was gutted in a fire at Sakri village, near Nagrota Surian, on Wednesday. A short-circuit is reported to be the cause of the fire. The adjoining post office also caught fire in which office record was damaged.

SUNDERNAGAR
In-laws booked:
Following the death of Sarla Devi, who reportedly died at the local Civil Hospital on Wednesday after consuming poison, the police has registered a case against her husband, Tara Chand, and her parents under Sections 498-A, 306, 34, IPC. The case was registered on a complaint of her father.
