9 sentenced to death in Pak
KARACHI, June 4 (AP) An anti-terrorist court today
sentenced to death nine members of a minority ethnic
party for gunning down a former provincial Governor,
court officials said. The nine men are members of the
Mutahida Quami Movement, a political group that
represents Indian Muslims settled in Pakistan after 1947.
The victim, Hakim Said, former Sind Governor was shot
dead on October 17, 1998.Fishermen abducted
COLOMBO, June 4 (UNI) The Liberation Tigers of
Timal Eelam (LTTE) abducted four fishermen along with two
boats in the sea off Kokilai in Trincomalee yesterday,
while troops killed four terrorists in separate
encounters in the embattled north, the Defence Ministry
said today. The Tigers also removed fuel tanks from some
boats and fled towards Mullaitivu.
Fire toll mounts
NEW DELHI, June 4 (PTI) Death toll in Monday's Lal
Kuan fire tragedy in the Capital rose to 49 today with
one more person succumbing to burns even as the police
arrested a partner of the transport company where the
killer chemical, which blew up the victims, was stored.
The 49 victims, 40 were men, six boys and three girls.
Hemkunt Sahib
RISHIKESH, June 4 (PTI) The doors of Hemkunt Sahib
in the Garhwal region, a shrine of the Sikhs, were thrown
open to devotees from today. Situated at an altitude of
14,000 feet, the place was chosen by Guru Gobind Singh,
tenth Sikh Guru, for meditation.
