Cultural Scene
Seeing beyond the wall

CHANDIGARH: Raj Jain, an eminent local artist, is holding his sixth solo show at Indusind Bank Art Gallery. The theme for his works is ‘wall’.

Wall, in the artist’s opinion, assumed significance and became an integral part of human existence. It has protected us from the vagaries of weather and has also been a wit-ness to historical events. “Besides these”, Raj says, “social norms also act as a wall in our lives”. What holds ground is that how we surmount it and see beyond it. If there is despair on one side, there is hope on the other. To show that the world moves on the greased wheels of this one feeling ‘hope’, I have shown light from one angle or the other in my paintings and in some this is indicated by a rainbow.

A former Professor of the College of Art, Chandigarh, Raj has been working on this subject for the past 10 years.

Working in water colours, he has used a technique which is different but has retained the luminosity because he is representing something which is not visible all the time .

The exhibition will be open till June 29.Back

Earlier, the drive was suspended following a protest by Mr R.L. Arora, leader of the ruling group in the MCC, in Sector 23 last month. Mr Arora had alleged that the officials were adopting a "pick-and-choose" policy while removing the encroachments.

Most groceries silent
From a Correspondent

CHANDIGARH, June 16 — In spite of fighting in the Kargil sector of Jammu and Kashmir, the prices of nearly most of the groceries, except refined ghee, Dalda, atta, sugar and gur, today remained stable in the local market here.

During a survey of the market, it was found that the price of atta remained stable. The retail price of a bag containing 10 kg atta was Rs 98 whereas its wholesale price was at Rs 95. Fifteen days back, its retail price soared to Rs 102.

The price of rice didn't see any fluctuation. The commonly consumed 'parmal' rice was available at Rs 12 per kg while its wholesale price remained stable at Rs 1150 per quintal. Two months back, its retail price was Rs 11 per kg.

Likewise, the price of pulses did not change. The retail price of 'chana dal', 'moong dal', 'masur dal' and 'arhar dal' per kg remained stable at Rs 17, Rs 32, Rs 24 and Rs 32, respectively, while 'mah sabat' (1kg) priced at Rs 27. At the same time, 'rajmah' and 'white chana' was priced at Rs 38 and Rs 32 per kg, respectively.

Mr Sajjan Kumar, a trader, said that due to less demand of pulses in summer, the prices remained stable. He added that though new pulses had arrived in the market, the rates had not come down.

Similarly, the prices of 'suji' and 'maida' did not see much change. The retail prices of suji (1kg) and maida (1kg) was same at Rs 8.50 while their wholesale prices remained at Rs 7.50 per kg. Compared to rates a fortnight ago, both suji and maida was cheaper by 50 paise per kg. Besan did not see any fluctuation. A kilogram of 'besan' was priced at Rs 20 whereas a quintal at Rs 1800.

The spice front also remained silent. The prices of popular brands were more than the locally made spices. MDH haldi, mirch, degi mirch and channa masala, each weighing 100 gram, were available for Rs 10, Rs 14, Rs 20 and Rs 22, respectively. The local made spices weighing 100 gm each were sold at Rs 2 less than the retail prices of the popular brand spices.

Contrary to this, refined ghee and Dalda showed a downfall in retail prices which nose-dived by Rs 5 per litre. A litre pack of Ginni's refined ghee was sold at Rs 45. A packet containing 1 litre of Dalda was priced at Rs 38 whereas its wholesale rate remained Rs 35.

Similarly, the retail price of sugar saw a slight downfall. Compared to last week's Rs 16.50 (1kg), sugar was cheaper by 50 paise per kg. The wholesale price of a quintal of sugar remained at Rs 1,550 compared to last week's Rs 1,590.

Likewise, a kg of gur was priced at Rs 14 compared to Rs 11 per kg three months back. Its wholesale price was Rs 1,250 per quintal compared to Rs 950, a couple of months back.Mr Satpal, a grocery sh op owner, attributed this rise in the price to the soaring temperature. He said during summer, the weight of gur decreases and melting is more, so retailers do not have more stock.Back
