BARNALA
Annual function:
The annual prize distribution function of the local Lal Bahadur Shastri Arya Mahila College was held here on Saturday. Mr N.S. Walia, SDM, Barnala, was the chief guest. He announced a development grant of Rs 11,000 for the college from the Red Cross Relief Fund.

Probe sought: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) expressing concern over the assault on Dr Triloki Nath, PCMS officer-cum-eye specialist, who was on duty at the local Civil Hospital, by Tirath Dass Sindhwani, a local journalist, has sought the Chief Minister's intervention and urged him to order a probe into this.

BATHINDA
Blood donation camp:
About 20 inmates of the local Central Jail donated blood at a camp organised by NIIT and the Blood Donors Council. In a press note issued here on Sunday, Mr Jawahar Goyal, Managing Director, NIIT, said to encourage blood donation among jail inmates, mementos were presented to them.

Club gets land: Mr S.R. Ladhar, Deputy Commissioner-cum-Chairman, Improvement Trust, has given a 500 square yard plot to the local Sahara Welfare Club on lower rates. He was addressing a gathering at the club and announced Rs 50,000 grant for the club.

FEROZEPORE
Memorandum given:
A deputation of teachers of local colleges led by Prof S S Sandhu, district President, Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union, met the Minister of State for Cooperation and Sainik Welfare, Punjab, Mr Janmeja Singh Sekhon, on Saturday and gave him a memorandum seeking the release of new UGC scales and pension gratuity.

College function: The Minister for Local Government and Labour and Employment, Punjab, Mr Balramji Dass Tandon, will preside over the annual convocation and prize distribution function of the local RSD College on March 6. This was stated by the Principal of the college, Mr Amrik Arora, here on Sunday.

Dharnas: Members of the Bharatiya Khadya Nigam Karamchari Sangh will stage dharnas at all district headquarters in Punjab on Thursday in support of their demands, according to the Senior Vice-Chairman of the local unit of the sangh, Mr Karnail Singh. Their demands included the settlement of the pension scheme, settlement of wage revision of employees from January, 1997, and new recruitments.

Grant for school: The Minister of State for Cooperation and Sainik Welfare, Punjab, Mr Janmeja Singh Sekhon, has announced a grant of Rs 1 lakh from his discretionary funds for the primary school building of Nurpur Sethan village near here. He was addressing a public function at the village on Sunday.

HOSHIARPUR
Gold ornaments snatched:
Two scooter-borne persons snatched a gold chain, gold ear rings and some cash from Ms Manjit Kaur while she was going to Susoli on her moped on Saturday. According to the police, the culprits followed her from Chabewal, where she works. They hit her moped from behind due to which she fell down. A case under Section 382 and 34, IPC, has been registered.

MALERKOTLA
Function:
The annual prize distribution function of the J.M. Shri Kundana College for Women, Ahmedgarh, 20 km from here, was held on Friday. Mr Anil Kumar, Chief Executive of Shreyans Paper Mill was the chief guest.

Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the local Rotary Club for 1999-2000: Presidents — Mr Rajpal Singh Dhaliwal; and Secretary — Dr Mohammad Sabbir.

NAWANSHAHR
Exchange programme:
A group study exchange team from the Rotary Club, Texas (USA), under a cultural exchange programme visited the town on Friday. The team visited Shivalik Public School, Kirpal Sagar and the blood bank run by the local Blood Donors Council. A function was also organised here which was presided over by Mr Ashok Kumar Sikka, SDM.

Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the local unit of the Vishva Hindu Parishad: President — Mr Harbans Lal Bhardwaj; Vice-President — Mr Jagmohan Khanna; General Secretary — Mr Tilak Raj Sehajpal; Secretary — Mr Vijay Kumar Verma; and Treasurer — Mr Kewal Krishan Sehajpal.

PATIALA
Protest march:
Teachers and employees of private schools in the district took out a protest march through bazaars of the city here on Saturday. They sought the implementation of the Fourth Pay Commission Recommendations and pay parity with schools of Delhi.

SAMRALA
Grants announced:
The Speaker of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, Mr Charanjit Singh Atwal, has announced grants of Rs 1 lakh for the construction of pucca streets at Mushkbad village, Rs 25,000 for the repair of the village primary school and Rs 60,000 for houses to Scheduled Caste persons.

Appointed: A local advocate, Mr Surjit Singh, has been appointed the General Secretary of the Sikh Budhijivi Council, Samrala subdivision. The appointment has been made on the recommendation of Dr Sukhbir Singh, President of the council, Punjab.

SANGRUR
Ban smoking:
The district unit of the Indian Chest Society has urged the Union Railway Minister, Mr Nitish Kumar, to impose a ban on smoking on railway platforms and in train, instead of imposing a ban on the sale of cigarettes and bidis on railway platforms. In a letter written to the minister, Dr Surinder Singla, district convener of the society, has suggested the imposition of penalty on passengers caught smoking.

Elected: Hotel owners of the city on Friday formed the Hotel Association of Chandigarh and elected Mr B.B. Bahl President of the association. Other office-bearers are Vice-President - Mr Paramjit Singh Tong; General Secretary - Mr Ashok Bansal; Joint Secretary —Mr Dinesh Gupta; and Treasurer — Mr Swatanter Lamba. All 24 members of the association elected Colonel Harsharan Singh Sandhu President of Honour of the association.

Chetna parv: The Chandigarh Social Welfare Advisory Board is celebrating 1999 as social awareness year (chetna parv). In a release issued here on Sunday, the chairperson of the board, Ms Kamla Sharma, stated that during the year, efforts will be made to sensitise society about the social problems of marginalised groups. March will be celebrated as ‘women’s empowerment month’.

Retired: Mr S.R. Kalra, Deputy Manager and Principal, Regional Training Centre, Chandigarh I & II, retired on Sunday after serving National Insurance Company for over 35 years. Mr Kalra started his career at Chandigarh as trainee development officer.

Barbers: The following were on Sunday elected office-bearers of the Roadside Barber Workers Union: chairman — Mr A K Sen; President — Mr Mohammad Ayub; Vice Presidents — Mr Barlawa Ram and Mr Mohammad Dilshad; General Secretary — Mr S. K. Sen; and Joint Secretary — Mr Sukhbir Singh.

Reinstatement sought: Members of the Education Department Class IV Workers Union on Sunday urged the authorities to reinstate Mr Kalu Ram, Vice-President of the union with immediate effect and discontinue putting women employees on night watchman duties. This was stated by Mr Kamla Bisht, President of the union.

Marriages solemnised:
The local unit of the Arya Samaj celebrated the 175th birth anniversary of Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati by solemnising marriages of two poor girls at B.N. Senior Secondary School in Sector 12-A here on Sunday.

AMBALA
New courses:
Mr D.S Dhesi, Additional Principal Secretary to the Haryana Chief Minister, said here on Saturday that BCA and BCom courses would be started at Government College here from the next academic session. He was speaking at the annual prize distribution function of the college.

FATEHABAD
Annual function:
The annual prize distribution function of the local Manohar Memorial College was held here on Saturday. Mr Mani Ram Godara, Home Minister, Haryana, was the chief guest. The minister announced a grant of Rs 51,000 for the college from his discretionary fund.

HISAR
Awarded:
Dr D.V Malhotra, Professor, and Dr A.K Nichani, Associate Professor, both from Department of Veterinary Medicine, CCS Haryana Agriculture University have been awarded the Ram Lal Aggarwal Gold Medal and Dr D.C Blood Gold Medal, respectively, for 1998 in recognition of their contributions to the field of veterinary medicine. These awards were conferred by the Indian Society for Veterinary Medicine at its annual convention held at Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology, Bhubaneswar, recently.

Convocation:
The annual convocation and prize distribution function of the local Chhotu Ram Kisan College was held here on Saturday. Dr M.L. Ranga, Vice-Chancellor, Kurukshetra University, was the chief guest. He gave away degrees to the graduates.

KURUKSHETRA
Exhibition:
A science exhibition was inaugurated by Mr K. Mahesh, a physicist of Kurukshetra University, on the premises of University College on Saturday. The exhibition has been organised to celebrate National Science Day.

SIRSA
Medical camp:
A two-day general health check-up camp was organised by the local branch of the Indian Medical Association at Kharian village in the district on Saturday. Dr Avtar Singh, Deputy Commissioner presided.

YAMUNANAGAR
Seminar on safety:
The Haryana Safety Council will organise a seminar on "Safety in Engineering Industries" on Thursday at Thapar Industries Club here. Mr Hardeep Kumar, President of the council and Chief Inspector of factories, will inaugurate the seminar.
