BATALA
Prize distribution:
The 51st prize distribution function of Baring Union Christian College here was held on Saturday. Dr H.S. Soch, Vice-Chancellor, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, was the chief guest. Dr Soch said the contribution of Christian missionaries in the field of service was immense. He urged students to learn the spirit of service fostered at Christian institutions.

FEROZEPORE
Saplings planted:
Army officers, jawans and their family members planted more than 2,000 saplings at Sehjra Sanctuary in the cantonment on Saturday. Speaking on the occasion, Brig O.P.S. Chauhan, Commander, Sehjra Brigade, said the unit was very concerned about the pollution of the environment. The sanctuary was adopted by Sehjra Brigade of Golden Arrow Division about three years back.

JALANDHAR
Prize distribution:
Dr Inder Pal Singh, an eminent educationist and Pro Vice-Chancellor, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, called on teachers and students to bring learning closer to living while presiding over the annual prize distribution function of B.D. Arya Girls College, Jalandhar cantonment, on Saturday.

KAPURTHALA
Unnatural deaths:
Two unnatural deaths have been reported in the district during the past 24 hours. Jaswinder Singh (27), a resident of Miani Bole, committed suicide by taking some poisonous substance on Friday. Amya (27), wife of an Army official, who sustained burn injuries from a gas stove, succumbed to her injuries. Both the bodies were brought to the local Civil Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

LUDHIANA
Seminar:
The Vice-Chancellor of Punjab Agricultural University, Dr G.S. Kalkat, has called for collaboration with European universities in the areas of information technology and agroprocessing. Dr Kalkat was speaking at the concluding day function of the three-day workshop-cum-seminar on "Agriculture to Industrial Society in the Global Information Economy" being sponsored by the European Union-India cross-cultural innovation network here on Saturday.

MALERKOTLA
Sangat darshan:
Mr Jaspal Singh Jassi, SDM , has directed the villagers to remove encroachments within a week. He said this at a sangat darshan programme held in Bodhai Kalan village on Friday. He also listened the grievances of the villagers.

MOGA
Prize distribution function:
Mr Tota Singh, Education Minister for Higher Education, Punjab, on Sunday presided over the annual prize distribution function of the local Guru Nanak College. The Principal of the college, Mr Surjeet Singh Gill, read the report of the school.

Bodies recovered: The Baghapurana police has recovered two bodies from villages. According to the police on Sunday, the body of a youth was recovered from a well at Langeana Purana village who reportedly committed suicide. Another body has been recovered from Kaleke village who reportedly died under mysterious circumstances. The bodies have been sent for a post-mortem examination.

PATIALA
Camp:
As many as 500 patients were examined and 20 operations were conducted in a three-day free medical check-up camp organised in memory of Dr Y.P. Soni at Soni Hospital, Rajpura, according to Dr Rajan Soni, chief organiser of the camp, here on Sunday.

Kar seva: The local unit of the Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Suraksha Samiti at its meeting held here on Sunday decided to participate in a kar seva at Dukhniwaran Gurdwara here on March 9. Mr Sanjeev Bhardwaj said this in a statement that other allies of the samiti would also participate in the seva.

Lok Adalats: The Assistant District Attorney, Mr Gurdeep Singh, said here on Saturday that the next Lok Adalats would be held at Rajpura on March 27, at Fatehgarh Sahib on April 10, at Amloh on May 15 and at Nabha on May 22.

Medical camp: The local Shree Jain Mahavir Seva Sangh organised a medical camp at the Government Primary School building at Kherra Jattan near here. As many as 476 patients were examined by doctors and medicines distributed free of cost by the sangh, according to a press note here on Saturday.

Ex-services league: The following have been nominated office-bearers of the Indian Ex-Services League (Punjab and Chandigarh), Patiala district: President — Sgt Prabhjot Singh; Senior Vice-President — Sub M.S. Sethi; Vice-President — Cad Haqiqat Singh; General Secretary — Sgt S.C. Chopra; and Finance Secretary — Capt S.P. Singh.

Engineers association: The following have been elected office-bearers of the PSEB Diploma Engineers Association (Patiala zone): President — Mr Chhaju Singh Gill, Senior Vice-President — Mr Harjinder Pal Sharma; Secretary — Mr Amarjit Singh Rosha.

Demanded: A meeting of the district unit of the Punjab Subordinate Services Federation was held under the presidentship of Mr D.C. Sharma here on Saturday. It demanded 15 per cent house rent, promotion after four, 9 and 14 years of service and immediate dispersal of bonus.top

Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Sector 23-D Residents Welfare Association: Chairman — Mr R. C. Gupta; President — Mr R. C. Sharma; Vice-Presidents — Mr Amarjit Arora and Mr Paul Singh; General Secretary — Mr M. L. Sandel; and Treasurer — Mr Surjit Singh.

Distributed: Stationery items and clothes were distributed among poor and deserving students by the Sivananda Divine Mission at a function held at the Sector 29-A Sivananda Seva Sadan on Sunday. Prayers followed by havan and community kitchen were also organised. A cultural programme was conducted. Mrs Promila Sharma of the mission gave away the prizes.

PANCHKULA
Plot sought:
The Ghoomer Academy of Arts and Culture has urged the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) to allot it a one-acre plot in the township. The issue was raised at a general body meeting of the academy held here on Sunday. A spokesman said branches of the academy would be set up in Punjab, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. Besides, regular classes on folk dances and arts would be started in the coming financial year.

Eye camps: As many as 2,347 patients were examined during a series of eye camps organised by the Rotary Club jointly with the Rotary Club of Dagenham, UK, at Kalka and other adjoining areas. About 3,100 poor patients were provided with spectacles free of cost during the camp.top

AMBALA
Address:
Female illiteracy was responsible for the backwardness of society, said Mr Vishnu Bhagwan, Secretary, Education, while delivering the convocation address at GMN College in the cantonment on Friday. Stressing the need for universal education, he said it was high time the government laid emphasis on the education of girls so that they get their rightful place in society.

Liquor vends: Liquor vends in the district were auctioned here on Saturday for about Rs 34 crore, thus showing an increase of about Rs 6 crore over last year's revenue.

HISAR
Farm workshop:
Prof J.B. Chowdhury, Vice-Chancellor, CCS Haryana Agricultural University, exhorted farm scientists and extension workers to take stock of the problems of the peasantry in the state and strive hard to find a viable solution to their problems. Professor Chowdhury was addressing farm scientists and officers of the Department of Agriculture at the agricultural officers' workshop here on Saturday.

Case registered: The city police has registered a case against four persons in connection with threatening a girl student of Guru Jambheshwar University. On the basis of her complaint a case has been registered under Sections 341, 506 and 34 of IPC. No arrest has been made so far, the police said on Sunday.

Council election:
Mr S.Kumar was unanimously elected president of the local Municipal Council at a meeting of the council held here on Saturday. Mrs Vidyawati was also unanimously elected vice-president of the council.

SIRSA
Poppy seized:
Kalyan Singh of Kurkaran village in Rajasthan was arrested by the police on Saturday at Tappi village in this district and seized 10 kg of poppy husk from his possession. A criminal case under Sections 15, 16, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act was registered against him.

SONEPAT
Seven injured:
Seven persons were injured, four of them seriously, when a truck loaded with bricks collided with a jeep on the Gohana-Kharkhauda road near Sikandarpur Majra village, 30 km from here, on Saturday. The injured were admitted to the Medical College and Hospital at Rohtak.

Six arrested: With the arrest of six persons the Gohana police on Sunday claims to have solved a case of theft committed in two poultry farms at Barota village recently. According to sources, the police raided at Ghazipur Mandi in Delhi where they were arrested. However, the main culprit is still absconding.top



Himachal Briefs
BILASPUR
Dispensary:
The 56th ayurveda dispensary of the district was inaugurated at Dhuni-Panjail, 35 km from here, on Friday evening by the president of the HP unit of the BJP, Mr Suresh Chandel. Mr Chandel said essential commodities like onions, salt and even wheat, rice and pulses were purchased and hoarded by some political leaders to create artificial scarcity and increase prices in a bid to tarnish the image of the government.

CHAMBA
Bridge built:
The Gehra bridge on the Chamba-Bharmour highway which had been washed away due to flash floods in October last year has been constructed as a bailey bridge. It was opened for vehicles this week. Mr K. Sanjaymurthy, Deputy Commissioner, said here on Saturday the bridge had been opened for vehicles after about five months and consequently, all activities had resumed in the Bharmour tribal subdivision of Chamba district.

Rally held: The district unit of the Himachal Gyan Vigyan Samiti on Saturday organised a rally at Chamba in support of its demands which include the formation of a women's commission in the state, 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and the Assembly and a ban on liquor, dowry and female foeticide. A memorandum was presented to the Deputy Commissioner.
