ABOHAR
Shop burgled:
Thieves entered a booth in the Subdivision Court and Tehsil complex on Wednesday and took away a photostat machine and some electronic goods.

One killed: Surender Kumar (30), a milk vendor was killed when his moped was allegedly hit by a truck near Fazilka bypass here on Thursday. The police has registered a case against the truck driver, Arvind Kumar under Section 304-A and 427of the IPC. The driver who belonged to Fatehgarh Choorian village, however, managed to escape.

AMRITSAR
Complainant:
A complainant landed himself in the police net on Thursday. Mr Parveen Sinha, SP (City), said on Thursday that the father of one Suntia had lodged an FIR with the B Division police station that his daughter had been abducted. The SP on investigation found that Sunita had gone to the house of her paramour Mohammad Farooq. Mr Sinha said the girl had been handed over to the parents. The FIR would be cancelled and a case would be framed against the father.

Appointed: Guru Nanak Dev University has appointed Dr Harbans Lal, Chairman, Department of Pharmacology, University of Texas, USA, as visiting honorary Professor of Emeritus in recognition of his contribution in the field of Sikhism and research on Punjab. This was stated by Dr R.S.Bawa, the Registrar of the university. He said the departments of English and Punjabi on the Regional Centre campus, Jalandhar, had been given the status of full-fledged departments. The departments of Journalism and Mass Communication and Laws on the regional campus had already been granted autonomous status by the university.

BATHINDA
Charges denied:
Mr Hari Om, a clerk at the local Improvement Trust who has been suspended by higher authorities for wrong allotment of booths, has denied the charges. In a press note issued here on Friday, he said the Chairman of the Improvement Trust had been apprised of the defaulters, and alleged that certain officials of the trust were trying to implicate him in a false case.

FEROZEPORE
Inaugurated:
A green hut constructed by Sehjra Brigade in the Sehjra sanctuary was inaugurated here on Thursday by Mrs Shashi Padha, wife of Maj-Gen K.C. Padha, VSM, GOC, Golden Arrow Division. Brig O.P.S. Chauhan said the sanctuary had as many as 8000 trees of 60 varieties, a lake and jogging tracks.

GURDASPUR
Dowry death:
Paramjit Kaur of Babri Nangal allegedly committed suicide recently after sprinkling kerosene as her in-laws were harassing her for bringing little dowry and giving birth to a daughter instead of a son. Mr Varinder Kumar, SSP, in a press note issued here on Thursday said Rajinder Kumar, her husband, Sewa Ram, her father-in-law, and Balvinder Kumar, her brother-in-law had been arrested.

DCC chief: Mr Sat Mahajan and Mr Kaul Singh Thakur, President and General Secretary of the Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee, respectively, while talking to reporters at the local Circuit House on Thursday said by appointing Mr Suresh Kumar as the local DCC chief the party had given weightage to Dalit community. They added that the new team of Mr Suresh would be announced after a three-day tour of the district.

JALANDHAR
Urged:
The Rashtriya Jagriti Manch (Punjab) has urged the Central Government to introduce flights to western countries from Raja Sansi Airport, Amritsar, keeping in view the tercentenary birth celebrations of Khalsa Panth. In a communication to the Prime Minister, here on Thursday, Mr Rajat Mohindru, the President of the Manch, said Punjabis settled all over Europe, would come to India to celebrate the 300th birth anniversary of Khalsa.

LUDHIANA
Surgeons’ forum:
Prominent surgeons here have formed the ‘Ludhiana surgeons’ Forum'. Mr Waheguru Pal Singh Medical Superintendent, Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, has been nominated its convener.

Police gesture: The Ludhiana traffic police has decided to honour those who bring accident victims to hospitals. This step is aimed at further reducing the number of accidental deaths and remove fear of police harassment.

Seminar:
A seminar was organised by the Punjab Union of Journalists on "Punjabi Journalism in 21st Century" at Students Home, Punjabi University, here on Thursday. Mr Gurbachan Singh Bhullar, Editor, Punjabi Tribune, and Dr Gulzar Singh Sandhu, former Editor, Punjabi Tribune, spoke on the occasion.

Doctor awarded: The Indian Dental Association of California has declared Dr Malkiat Singh, MDMS, Principal, Government Dental College, Patiala, “the teacher of the decade”, according to Dr R.Salvaan, president, IDAC.

Coaching: The IAS and Allied Services Training Centre at Punjabi University will start coaching for the second batch of the PMT and CET for the general and the SC and ST category candidates from April 1, according to Dr G.S.Bajwa, the Director of the centre. He said the SC and ST candidates would be provided free coaching and stipend as per rules.

Urged: Mr Kulbir Singh Sadkheri, general secretary, Punjab State Karamchari Dal, in a statement here on Thursday urged the Punjab Government to regularise the services of all daily wage employees who have been working for many years.

UGC scheme: A two-day series of the UGC scheme extension lecture on communication perspective on learner-based methodology in teaching of English concluded at the Government College of Education, Sector 20, here on Friday. Experts gave lectures about the latest developments in the field.

Blood donation: A total of 100 units of blood were donated at a camp organised jointly by the SBI, Ram Darbar branch, and the Lions Club Chandigarh Grace, on Friday.

Protest: Members of the executive committee of the Mandir Sidh Baba Balak Nath in Sector 31 on Friday protested against the Chandigarh Administration’s decision to seal the front entry to the temple to construct a the permanent exhibition ground.

Religious function: The Shri Ram Naam Sumrin Satsang will celebrate the Shri Ram Janamotsav on March 21 at Nehru Park in Sector 22. Over 2,000 devotees will recite the sundar kand path. A free bus service will be available for the devotees from Panchkula.

Disabled Day: The Punjab Physically handicapped Association will organise a seminar on “21st century and the disabled” at the Sector 35 Kisan Bhavan on March 21, Mr Ajit Sailani Chairman, of the association, announced here on Friday. More than 100 delegates are expected to participate.

Shoba yatra: The Hindu Parv Mahasabha will organise a shobha yatra on March 23 to mark Ram Navmi celebrations in the city. The shobha yatra will start from the Sector 23-B Sri Sanatan Dharam temple and move through various parts of the city before concluding at the Sector 27-B Sri Sanatan Dharam temple.

Five booked:
The police has booked Sanjay Kumar, his father Agnu Ram, sister Sangeeta, mother Shivvati and brother Krishan Kumar under Section 304-B of the IPC for allegedly burning Sanjay’s wife, Mrs Sangeeta, to death. The accused are residents of Hari Nagar in the cantonment.

BHIWANI
Camp:
Mr Chhattar Singh Chauhan, Speaker, Haryana Vidhan Sabha, inaugurated a free medical camp organised by the Ayurvedic Department at the local Kirorimal dharamshala here on Thursday. The camp was organised by the department with the cooperation of Swami Dayanand Giri to commemorate the 14th death anniversary of Swami Mohangiri.

FARIDABAD
Eight injured:
More than eight persons were injured, one of them seriously, when some armed persons attacked a shopkeeper in Sector 2 (NIT) here on Thursday.

FATEHABAD
Four arrested:
The police has arrested four persons for fraudulently obtaining a fake court decree of a piece of land in their favour. According to the SP, Mr Rajbir Deswal, Mr Bharpur Singh, a resident of Ludhiana, had lodged an FIR with the police at Rattia in this district, alleging that his brother Mohan Singh in league with others had fraudulently obtained a fake court decree of his 340 kanal and 19 marlas of agriculture land situated in Telewara village in this district. The police registered a case under Sections 428, 465, 467, 474, 471 and 120 of the IPC and arrested the accused.

Opium seized: The police yesterday arrested two persons under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and recovered 900 gm of opium from their possession. According to reports, the police at Bhattu Kalan in the district got a tip-off that Satbir, a resident of Gandali village and Atma Ram, a resident of Chuli Bagrian village were preparing opium at the residence of the former. The district police chief, sent a police party to raid the place and arrested both the accused red-handed. A case under Section 18 of the NDPS Act has been registered against them. In another case the police at Jakhal in this district has arrested Bhan Singh and Jalla, both residents of Bagram village in Punjab, and recovered poppy husk from their possession.

Factory worker murdered: A 30-year-old factory worker was found murdered in a factory premises on Thursday. The victim has been identified as Bhoj Ram. The police has sent the body for post-mortem. No arrest has been made so far.

Durbar:
An open durbar was held at Israna block, 20 km from here, on Wednesday. Mr Anurag Rastogi, Deputy Commissioner, presided. As many as 55 complaints were received. Mr Manoj Yadav, SP, was also present.

ROHTAK
Music programme:
Padma Bhushan Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and his sons Amaan Ali and Ayaan Ali, accompanied by Tanmay Bose on the tabla enthralled the audience in the Maharshi Dayanand University on Wednesday. The progamme was organised by the Music Department of the University. The Vice-Chancellor who was present on the occasion honoured Pandit Kundan Lal, a veteran musician.

Award: Dr Promila Batra, Reader, Psychology Department, Maharshi Dayanand University, was conferred with Dr (Mrs) Dayal D.Parkash Memorial Young Psychologist Award during the annual convocation of the Indian Psychological Association held on March 13 at the Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut. The award was given away by the Vice-Chancellor of the CCSU.

SIRSA
Suicide:
Sukhdev Singh (20), a registered medical practioner and who was working as a doctor at Nanakpur village, reportedly committed suicide by consuming poison here on Thursday. According to informed sources, he had been suffering from depression due to some domestic problem.

JHAKRI
Power committee:
The Central Parliamentary Committee on Power will shortly visit the Nathpa-Jhakri power project where the workers’ unrest and an indefinite strike is on for the past one month. This was declared by Mr Basudev Acharya, the Chairman of the committee and a Lok Sabha MP, while addressing a workers rally in Sha village, near Jhakri, on Wednesday.

NAHAN
Three injured: Three shops were damaged and two scooters smashed near Chowgan on Wednesday when a loaded truck (no. H.P.-18-4905) rammed into the shops. Three persons were also injured. The driver lost control of the vehicle while coming from the Naya Bazar side. The local police has registered a case.

Fraud: According to Prithvi Raj, Superintendent of Police, Sirmour, Tarsem Lal, a resident of Raipur Madan of Una district, was arrested at Sangrah, 60 km from Nahan. Impersonating as a brigadier he was allegedly collecting money from people on the pretext of providing them jobs in the Army. A case under Sections 170, 171, 419 and 420 of the IPC has been registered.

DCC office-bearers:
Mr Lajja Ram, who took over as the District Congress Committee President from Mr Arun Sen, on Monday has appointed 17 additional office-bearers to the party's district body.

SUNDERNAGAR
Minister's announcement:
Residents of Mandi district were told by three ministers, Mr Mohinder Singh, Mr Mansha Ram and Mr Parkash Chaudhary that Rs 15 crore would be spent on developmental works in the district in the current financial year. Interestingly the total budget for various developmental schemes in this district is Rs 4 crore.
