AMRITSAR
Ban sought:
The anti-Corruption Forum has urged the Chief Minister, Mr Parkash Singh Badal, to impose a blanket ban on direct recruitment of class IV employees by certain departments, including municipal corporations. In a press note, the president of the forum, Thakur Hari Singh, has alleged that some Class IV employees were directly recruited under "pressure" from politicians.
Awarded: Two botanists, Dr S.S Bir, Professor Emeritus, Punjabi University, Patiala, and Prof I.S. Grover from Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, have been awarded for excellence in plant and environmental sciences for the year 1999 by the Society of Botanical Sciences of Guru Nanak Dev University. The award carries a citation and an honorarium of Rs 5,000/-.
Painting competition: An all-India on-the-spot painting competition was organised here by the ICS. The city wise results would be declared in May.

Fair price shop: A fair price shop for police personnel and their families was inaugurated at the local Police Lines by Mr Lok Nath Angra, SSP on Tuesday

GARHSHANKAR
Dead:
Iqbal Bahadur who was working as a chowkidar at Punjab Agriculture University's Agriculture Science Centre-Bahowal was found dead under mysterious circumstances. His hands and legs were tied and his body bore injury marks.
Farmers agitation:
The president of the state unit of the Punjab Kisan Sabha, Mr Rachpal Singh, and the vice-president, Mr Darshan Singh Mattu, in a statement here on Tuesday, said that the organisation would start the second phase of its agitation from July 15. They said the agitation would continue till the farmers' loan amounting to Rs 5700 crore were waived by the government.

HOSHIARPUR
Milk rates:
Resentment prevails among residents of the district against the authorities’ failure to withdraw the recent increase in the prices of milk and curd by dairy owners and halwais. The rates of milk had been increased from Rs 13 per kg to Rs 14 kg and of curd from Rs 18 per kg to Rs 20 per kg.
Convicted: In a case of forcible abortion of Narinder Kaur of Ahrana Khurd, the District Sessions Judge, Mr R.N.Gupta has convicted her husband, father-in-law, mother-in-law and a nurse, Sarabjit Kaur, of Jagirpur village under Sections 315 and 120 of the IPC. They were sentenced to two years' rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 500 each.

MALERKOTLA
Poison:
Akhtari, a resident of the local Jamalpura Colony died on Monday after consuming poison. The police has registered a case under Section 174 of the IPC. The cause of the suicide is not known.

MOGA
Fire:
Goods worth several thousands of rupees were destroyed in a fire which broke out in the house of a farmer at Khosa Randhir village of Baghapurana police station in this district. the cause of the fire is not known.

NAWANSHAHR
Office-bearers:

PATIALA
Annual function:
Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Public School celebrated its second annual function here on Tuesday. It was organised by the B.N. Khalsa Education Trust. A cultural programme was also held on the occasion. The Principal, Mr Gurnam Singh, highlighted the activities of the school.
Training course: The IAS and Allied Services Training Centre at Punjabi University will start a two-month course for the PCS (Judicial) from May 17. This was disclosed by Dr G.S. Bajwa, Director of the centre here on Tuesday. He said those interested could apply on a prescribed form.

Blood camp: A blood donation camp was organised by the HDFC bank and the Indian Red Cross Society here on Tuesday. The camp was organised on the premises of the bank.
Nominated: Mr Dharam Paul Gupta, President of the local unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday nominated Mr Pramod Bindal as Secretary of the unit.
Clarification: Mr D.P. Shingal is Assistant General Manager, Punjab, in the State Bank of India and not Deputy General Manager, Punjab, as erroneously reported on Wednesday.
Mourned: Chandigarh Eagles, Retired EME Officers Association, which met here on Tuesday, under the chairmanship of Brig Ramesh Chander (retd), paid tributes to Major J.D.S. Dhaliwal, who died in a road accident in Jammu and Kashmir.
Meeting put off: The annual meeting of the Punjab Government College Retired Teachers Welfare Association, scheduled to be held on May 7 at the Government College for Men, Sector 11, has been postponed to May 12 at the same place.
Water shortage: A meeting of the Parent-Teacher Association of Government High School, Sector 47, held under the presidentship of Mr Ramesh Kumar Chandolia here on Wednesday alleged that there was an acute water shortage in the school. The association demanded immediate replacement of water tanks and provision of a booster pump in the school.

Found dead:
Ran Singh, a resident of Badholi village in Naraingarh subdivision, was found dead in a garden on Monday. A case of murder has been registered against Bobby and Leela of the same village.

BHIWANI
Symposium:
The all-India Sahitya Parishad, Bhiwani, will organise a symposium on "Conversion in the present context" in the Neki Ram auditorium on Sunday on the occasion of Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti. Mr Atam Prakash Dadu will be the chief guest while Dr Kamal Kishore Goenka, Delhi University, eminent journalist D.B Vashisth, Dr S.K Khandelwal and Dr Harish Chander Verma will be the speakers. Famous poet Lakhan Singh and other literary personalities will also be honoured.

FATEHABAD
Anganwari Workers:
The Deputy Commissioner, Mr V.Rajashekhar, has lauded the role of anganwari workers in the implementation of various welfare schemes. He was speaking at the prize distribution function organised on Wednesday at the local Bal Bhavan under the integrated child development scheme. The Additional Deputy Commissioner, Mr Arun Kumar Gupta, and senior officers were present.

KAITHAL
Teachers’ protest:
A large number of teachers staged a dharna in front of the office of the District Education Officer here on Monday in support of their demands. The teachers submitted a memorandum to the Education Minister, regarding their demands. Addressing the teachers, Mr O.P. Shastri, state secretary of the teachers’ union, urged the government to remove anomalies in their pay scales and demanded the regularisation of the services of the teachers appointed on an ad hoc and contract basis.

ROHTAK
Potable water:
Students of the local Model School have to drink "hot" water in this scorching heat as water coolers, in the school are out of order. Only one of the six water coolers is functioning properly which is not adequate for nearly 3300 students.

SIRSA
Crushed:
A young man was crushed to death by a train on Tuesday. The deceased was identified as Ramesh Chawla, a commission agent in the local grain market, and a letter written in his hand was found in his pocket by the police. The Railway police is investigating the case.
Demands: Mr Babu Ram Gupta, president, Sarv Karamchari Sangh, Mandi Dabwali, and Mr Mandar Singh Odhan, president, Haryana Roadways Workers' Union, Mandi Dabwali, in a statement strongly criticised the state government for not implementing the long-standing demands of employees in the state. They demanded that the pending bonus of employees of Haryana Roadways and arrears of overtime be released immediately. They also demanded that daily wage employees and ad hoc employees be regularised.
Cases settled: Over 110 cases received in the weekly open durbar were settled at the local Patwar Bhavan on Monday. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Arun Gupta, Additional Deputy Commissioner, urged senior officers to ensure that public grievances were redressed at the earliest.
Arrested: Sunil Kumar alias Anil, a driver, was arrested by the local police in a criminal case on Monday on the charge of rash and negligent driving. He was accused of hitting Joginder Singh with his jeep on March 28, leading to Joginder Singh's death.
Kisan Sabha: Mr Jai Chand Saharani and Mr Jaswant Singh Josh, convener and president, respectively, of the Akhil Bhartiya Haryana Kisan Sabha, Sirsa, in a statement on Tuesday demanded that in order to save farmers from losses being faced by them in the production of cotton, a board of various departments, including Weather, Science, Agriculture and Power be constituted. They said members of this board should be directed to educate farmers on cultivation techniques and measures to be taken for saving crops from diseases.
Suicide bid: Kalu Ram (30), a resident of the local Kutcha Mohalla, allegedly tried to commit suicide by hanging himself at his home on Monday. He was saved by his brother and admitted to the Civil Hospital Sirsa.

YAMUNANAGAR
Indian Medical Association:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the Indian Medical Association, Jagadhri-Yamunanagar branch, for 1999-2000: President — Dr Parmesh Goel; Vice-Presidents — Dr Mahabir Goel and Dr Anil Aggarwal; Secretary — Dr D.C Mittal; and Treasurer — Dr J.K Gulati.
Accident: One person died in a road accident near a workshop at Jagadhri on Tuesday. Harjinder Singh (30) of Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar was going home on a bicycle when he was hit by a truck. He died on the spot. The police has registered a case under Section 279 and 304 A of the IPC.

BILASPUR
Polio eradication:
The World Health Organisation, the Government of India and the Himachal Government jointly organised, a workshop on "Polio eradication in the zonal hospital here which was attended by 25 medical officers, 15 ayurvedic doctors and 25 other Health Department officers. The Chief Medical Officer, Dr M.L. Mahajan, said on Tuesday that the participants were educated on special survey techniques.
Revised pension: The HP Police Pensioners’ Welfare Association has expressed resentment against the non-payment of revised pension on the basis of the fourth Punjab Pay Commission. Drawing attention of the state government to the plight of the pensioners, the president of the association, Mr Krishan Lal Chopra, submitted a memorandum demanding immediate payment of the revised pension from January 1,1996.
Construction work: Construction work on the Rs 92 lakh Mandwan bridge is in full swing and will be completed at the earliest. Laying the foundation stone of a community centre building at Lehad village on Monday, the Cooperation Minister, Mr Rikhi Ram Kondal, also announced a grant of Rs 2 lakh for metalling the road from Jhandutta to Mandwan.
Training centre: The Himachal State Handloom and Handicrafts Development Corporation will soon open a rug weaving training centre for youths belonging to the Scheduled Castes at Mandimanwan village. The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Ramesh Kapil, said on Tuesday that 20 youths would be provided training in the first batch and later they would also be given financial help to start, their own ventures.
