|200 feared dead in ferry capsize
DHAKA, May 9 (AP) Prevented by high winds and strong currents, rescuers today gave up hope of finding the 200 persons missing after an overcrowded ferry overturned in a turbulent river in southern Bangladesh. The steel-bodied ferry sank during a storm yesterday with 300 persons on board in Meghna river in Barisal district, 120 km from here. Witnesses said as many as 100 persons swam ashore or were rescued by local fishermen.
AGARTALA, May 9 (PTI) At least 3,000 persons have taken shelter in relief camps following flashfloods in Dharmanagar sub-division of North Tripura district, official sources said today. Sources said all low lands of the sub-
division were submerged due to the flood in the rain-fed Juri river which also washed away several small bridges and roads.
|Hooch toll rises to 101
DHAKA, May 9 (PTI) The death toll from spurious home-brewed liquor consumption in Narsingdi, about 35 km from here, has risen to 101 after 37 more deaths were reported overnight, even as condition of at least 36 more persons admitted to different hospitals were reported to be critical, a leading Bangladeshs English daily reported today.
Top ULFA man killed
GUWAHATI, May 9 (PTI) Three persons, including a top ULFA militant, were killed and two others injured in separate incidents in Assam since yesterday, official sources said here today. The self-styled action group commander of ULFA, Jayati Deka, was shot dead by troops of the Armys 21 Mountain Division today in an encounter at Barbila village in lower Assams Nalbari district.
