Staines' murder: 1 more held
BARIPADA, (Orissa), May 13 (UNI) In yet another
major breakthrough, the police has arrested Rabi Soren
(21), an accused in the killing of Australian missionary
Graham Staines and his two minor sons in January at
Manoharpur in Orissas Keonjhar district. Mayurbhanj
Police Superintendent Pradip Kapoor told newspersons that
acting on a tip off a special squad led by Sub-Inspector
Manoj Kumar Mahanto of local police station raided the
house of Rabi Sorens brother-in-law at Radhapur
under Patna police station in Keonjhar district last
night and arrested the accused. Rabis arrest was
the third in a row made by the police during the last
three days. All three arrested were close associates of
key accused Dara Singh, who is on the run carrying a cash
reward of Rs 5 lakh.CBSE results
NEW DELHI, May 13 (UNI) The Central Board of
Secondary Education (CBSE) affiliated schools can get the
class X and XII results on E-mail. "Schools desirous
of having the results on e-mail may intimate their e-mail
addresses on cbsedli nda.vsnl.net.in at the
earliest," a CBSE statement here today said. The
results would be announced soon.
NTPC threat
NEW DELHI, May 13 (PTI) National Thermal Power
Corporation (NTPC) today reiterated its threat to cut
power supply to Delhi from June 1, if the Delhi Vidyut
Board (DVB) failed to assure payment of dues about Rs
2,000 crore within a time frame of one to two years.
"We have asked for a reasonable time schedule from
the DVB as to when they would pay their debts and the
current dues. They have to respond to the NTPCs
notice before June 1, failing which, the corporation
would start regulating power to the national
capital," Power Minister P.R. Kumaramangalam told
reporters on the sidelines of a seminar organised by
Central Electricity Authority (CEA) here.
Explosion kills
41
BEIJING, May 13 (Reuters) A huge gas explosion
ripped through a coal mine in China's northeastern
province of Shaanxi, killing 41 persons and injuring 12,
the China Coal daily reported today. It said the blast
occurred on Monday morning while 96 workers from a
construction firm were setting up the mine.
Jaswant's visit
MOSCOW, May 13 (PTI) The visit of External Affairs
Minister Jaswant Singh to Moscow will go on as per
schedule despite the fresh political row dogging Russia
after the sudden sacking of Prime Minister Yevgeny
Primakov. The visit of Mr Jaswant Singh will be as per
schedule and he will hold talks with care-taker Foreign
Minister Igor Ivanov on May 24 and 25, diplomatic sources
told PTI.

PANAJI, May 13 (UNI) Dr Kashinath Jhalmi, former
Opposition leader and prominent Maharashtrawadi Gomantak
Party (MGP) leader, was among the four candidates, who
filed their nomination papers here today for the June 4
assembly elections in the state. Dr Jhalmi filed his
candidature from the Priol constituency. The other
candidates were Ms Fatima D'Sa, a Goa Rajiv Congress
nominee, Mr Minino Jose Cardozo, an Independent, and Mr
Pandurang Nagendra Nagvekar of the MGP.
Order on
passport
NEW DELHI, May 13 (PTI) The Delhi High Court today
set aside an order of the passport authorities to revoke
the passport of the wife of Iqbal Memon, alias
mirchi one of the main accused in the 1993
Mumbai serial bomb blast cases. Setting aside the
passport authorities order, Justice CM Nayar said there
was no case pending against Ms Harja Iqbal Memon in any
court and asked the passport authorities to re-examine
afresh within four weeks her application for a universal
passport.
New US envoy to
China
WASHINGTON, May 12 (AP) Retired Adm. Joseph W.
Prueher, who led all U.S. forces in the Pacific during a
particularly tense period in U.S.-Chinese relations, has
been picked to be Americas Ambassador to Beijing,
the White House said today. Mr Prueher (56) would succeed
Mr James Sasser, who has wanted to leave for some time.
