Pulse polio:
A 10-member team of different non-government organisations (NGOs) has laid stress on taking effective measures to make the general public aware about the forthcoming rounds of the immunisation programme in the district. In its report sent to UNICEF on Saturday, a team led by Lion Raj Aggarwal said a number of people were still ignorant about the next three rounds of the pulse polio drive.

FEROZEPORE
Caught red-handed:
Superintendent of Police Hardial Singh Mann said on Friday that Block Development and Panchayat Officer (BDPO) Gurbachan Singh was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 2,000 from Kewal Singh, former sarpanch of Kabarbachha village for not taking any action on a complaint received against the complainant (Kewal Singh). A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against the BDPO.

KHANNA
Currency racket:
The local police has busted a fake currency racket and seized fake currency worth Rs 1 lakh. According to SSP R.L. Bhagat, Manohar Lal and Roni were arrested following a tip-off at a naka organised on the Maloud Kupkalan road. The accused had tied the currency notes round their legs.

LUDHIANA
Karva Chauth:
The working committee of the local unit of the BJP has threatened to launch an agitation against the authorities of a local convent school for allegedly punishing girl students for applying henna on their hands and wearing bangles on Karva Chauth. The committee demanded that the school authorities should apologise for the same.

PATIALA
Small-scale industry:
Small-scale industry is the backbone of the Punjab’s economy and there is a need to strengthen the small-scale sector, said Mr J.M.L. Srivastava, Special Secretary, Minister of Agriculture, while delivering the inaugural address at "Alumni-99" a get-together of Punjab School of Management Studies organised at Punjabi University on Saturday.

Toys donated: Students of the local Government Bikram College of Commerce donated toys and games to disabled children at a function organised at the college premises on Saturday after the bhog ceremony of the Ramayana’s path. Mrs Aparajita Malhotra, Principal, was also honoured on the occasion.top

Lecture: Importance of commercialisation of infrastructure in the country was central to a lecture by Mr Pradeep Singh, a former IAS officer and visiting faculty at Harvard University, at the Panjab University Business School here on Saturday. Mr Pradeep Singh divided his lecture in three main parts — why infrastructure has not been commercialised in India, why infrastructure should be commercialised and how should commercialisation should be done?

HISAR
Vehicle overturns:
Two persons, including a four-year-old girl, were killed and four injured when a Tata Sumo carrying them overturned near Bhuna, about 40 km from here, on Saturday night. The vehicle was on its way to Uklana Mandi. The deceased were identified as Vikky Kansal (25) and Munni (4), residents of Uklana Mandi.

Scientist's visit: Dr Dawn I. Pysarchik, Associate Dean, International Studies, Michigan State University (USA), concluded her three-day visit of the Home Science College of CCS Haryana Agricultural University on Sunday. According to Dr Indu Grover, Dean, College of Home Science, during her visit Dr Pysarchik reviewed the progress of different projects initiated under the agriculture human resource development project.

Medical camp: As many as 1200 head of cattle were treated at a one-day camp organised by the Krishi Gyan Kendra of CCS Haryana Agricultural University at Bhirrana village on Saturday. The camp was organised in collaboration with the Lions Club. Thirty surgical operations were performed at the camp.

PANIPAT
Health scheme:
A health package scheme was launched by the Health Department for the treatment of weavers of the local Mittal International on Saturday. The scheme is financed by the Haryana State Hathkargha Nigam. Deputy Commissioner Sandeep Garg said subsidy of Rs 1,19,000 was given by the World Bank through the nigam to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Panipat, for providing free medical aid to the weavers of the town.

ROHTAK
Patrol duties:
The Deputy Commissioner has ordered that all able-bodied adult male of the district shall be liable to perform patrol duties at night with a view to prevent sabotage and to ensure the security and safety of railway bridges, tracks, trains, telephone lines, telegraph lines, canals, etc situated in the jurisdiction of their villages. The order shall remain in force till further orders.

Road mishap: Rohtas of Chhichhrana village died on the spot when a jeep overturned near Kheri Meham village on Saturday. The Meham police has registered a case under Sections 279 and 304-A of the IPC following a complaint by Chander Singh in this regard.

Forgery cases: The police registered two cases of forgery on Saturday. Ram Kishan of Gochhi village filed a complaint stating that Pope Singh and Mange Ram of Arya Nagar here sold their truck to him by preparing forged documents while the vehicle was purchased on a bank loan. A case has been registered under Sections 419, 420, 467, 468 and 471 of the IPC . In another case, Ajay Sachdeva complained that Rockland Investment Company has embezzled Rs 3,11,061. The police has registered a case under Sections 420 and 406 of the IPC.

Dairy seminar: Dairy experts and veterinarians have called for adoption of the new feeding strategies and techniques in order to meet the challenges of the changing scenario in the dairy business. These views were expressed at a seminar on "Dairy nutrition" held here on Saturday. Dr S.K. Khurana, Deputy Director, Animal Husbandry appealed to veterinary doctors and experts to visit the remote areas of the state to make farmers aware of the new developments in the field.

SIRSA
Attacked:
Suresh (29) and Sanjay (27) of Talwara village in the district were injured seriously when they were attacked by unidentified persons while returning from Ellenabad. They were fired at as soon as they got off a bus. They were also attacked with sharp-edged weapons. The police has registered a case.

SONEPAT
Four arrested:
The district police chief said on Sunday that four youths had been arrested in connection with the alleged robbing of Mr Pawan Kumar, a lecturer and a resident of Model Town on Thursday. He said the fifth person involved in the case was still at large. A case of looting has been registered against the accused.

Annual function: Haryana Governor Mahabir Prasad on Saturday urged the educationists and parents to imbibe national character among the children. He said this while presiding over the 25th annual function of the Motilal Nehru School of Sports at Rai, 15 km from here. A cultural programme was also presented by students on the occasion. top

BILASPUR
Found dead:
Minakshi, a daily wage earner in the Block Development Office here, was found dead in her room at the working women's hostel near Circuit House on Sunday morning under mysterious circumstances. The Additional Superintendent of Police said her body had been sent for the post-mortem. The deceased was unmarried and belonged to Padiyalag village, near Ghumarwin.

Attack on scribe: The Himachal Pradesh Journalist Federation on Sunday condemned the attack on Ramshahr-based journalist Geetaram Kaushal, near Nalagarh, a couple of days ago. The federation urged the district authorities to take immediate suitable action against the culprits.

JWALAMUKHI
Land evicted:
The Divisional Forest Officer-cum-Collector, Mr Pardeep Thakur, has ordered the eviction of 20 hectare of the Government forest land in the Dehra forest division of Kangra district under the anti-encroachment drive. The department has so far settled 126 cases of land encroachment under the HP Public Premises and Land (Eviction and Recovery) Act, 1971.

Junior engineers: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Dehra unit of the Himachal Junior Engineers Association: president — Mr Ashwani Dheer; secretary — Mr Rahesh Sharma; and cashier — Mr Milap Sharma.

Dead: Ajay Kumar of Kuthar village near Haripur has died under mysterious circumstances. The deceased was an army personnel and was on leave. The reason behind his death was not known. The police has registered a case.

Youth killed: A 20-year-old youth was run over and killed by a car near Pragpur on the Jwalamukhi-Hoshiarpur road on Friday night. The police has registered a case and arrested the car driver from an adjoining village.

NAHAN
Truck impounded:
The Sirmaur police has impounded a truck carrying 20 deodar sleepers without permit at Sangrail, 60 km from here. A case under Section 379, IPC, and Sections 41 and 42 of the Indian Forest Act has been registered in this regard.
