Roadways driver arrested

CHANDIGARH, Nov 10 — The police has arrested the driver of a Rajasthan Roadways bus for causing the death of an unknown pedestrian due to allege negligent driving near the Makhan Majra turning point late last night.

According to police sources, the unknown person was hit by the bus and was rushed to the PGI where he succumbed to his injuries. Satish Kumar, the driver of the bus, RJ 14 C 9173, has been arrested and the bus impounded.

A case under Sections 279, 304 - A, IPC, has been registered.

Arrested: The police has arrested Varinder Pal, a resident of Sector 20, on the charges of stealing two scooters from various parts of the city

Sources said the accused was arrested last night for roaming in the Industrial Area under mysterious circumstances. On preliminary interrogation he confessed that he was a thief and had stolen the scooters, one of which was recovered from Sector 46 today afternoon. More recoveries are expected.

Theft cases: Separate cases of theft and burglary have been reported from various parts of the city. Cases have been registered.

Mrs Kamlesh, a resident of Sector 36, reported that someone had burgled her house and decamped with household goods besides Rs 50,000 in cash.

Mr J K Datta, a senior Excise and Taxation Customs officer, reported that someone had removed the tyres of his car along with some accessories.

Ambala resident Anurag Sablok reported that his scooter CHT 1932 was stolen from Sector 17.

Six held: The police has arrested six persons for quarreling and registered a case under Sections 107 \ 151. Those arrested include Subash, Tipu, Badal, residents of Sector 29, and Sham Sunder and Ram Bilas, residents of colony Nor 4.

Intimidation: A case under Sections 186, 332, 353, 427, 506 of the IPC was registered against Pawan Kumar and his brother, Arjun, for alleged manhandling and criminal intimidation of an Inspector of the Food and Supplies Department.

The Inspector, Harbans Lal, was working in his office when the two men approached him with a demand for getting a particular work done. When the official resisted the move, the two allegedly manhandled him following which a complaint was filed with the police.Back



 

Price Watch
Fruit prices fluctuate

CHANDIGARH, Nov 10 — The prices of a number of fruit have witnessed fluctuation in the local market during the past one week.

During a survey of the market today it was found that delicious variety of apple has become costly during this period. If a kg of the fruit was priced between Rs 20 and Rs 25 during last week, it was available in the market today for Rs 30. According to traders the hike was owing to lesser arrival in the market from Himachal Pradesh during this period. Similarly, golden and Kinnaur varieties have also registered a hike as the price of the former increased from Rs 30 to Rs 40 a kg and that of the latter from Rs 40 to Rs 50 a kg during this period. The wholesale price increased from Rs 500 to Rs 600 per 17-kg pack and from 600 to Rs 700 per 17-kg pack, respectively.

On the other hand guava has become cheaper during this period. If a kg of the fruit was priced at Rs 20 in retail just four days ago, it could be purchased today for Rs 15 a kg in the retail market. The wholesale price has come down from Rs 12 to Rs 8 a kg during this period. There was no change in the price of grapes as these could be purchased for Rs 80 a kg in retail and for Rs 150 per 3 -kg pack in the wholesale market.

Pomegranate has also become cheaper during this period. A kg of the fruit priced at Rs 50 last week, could be purchased today after paying Rs 40. The wholesale price of the fruit has come down from Rs 160 to Rs 130 per 3.5 kg pack.

Dates which have just registered their entry in the market was priced at Rs 40 per kg. In the wholesale market the price was Rs 30 a kg. There was no change in the price of banana as it could be had after paying Rs 20 per dozen in retail and Rs 120 per 100 pieces in the wholesale market. The same was the case with papaya as it could be purchased for Rs 20 a kg in retail and for Rs 15 a kg in the wholesale market.

While the price of orange decreased from Rs 50 to Rs 40 a dozen, there was no change in the price of mausambi as it could be had for Rs 50 a dozen in retail and for Rs 115 per three dozen pieces in the wholesale market.Back


 


CBSE basketball tourney begins

CHANDIGARH, Nov 10 — The CBSE Cluster XI (Chandigarh and HP regions) Basketball Tournament for girls began here today at IS Dev Samaj Girls Senior Secondary School, Sector 21. It was inaugurated by Mr Yog Raj Sachdeva, Regional Officer of the CBSE in Chandigarh, and the guest of honour was Mr G.P. Gautam, OSD (Sport) of the CBSE in New Delhi.

Today, though four matches were scheduled to be played, only three could be held due to a walkover.

The credit for holding this three-day event goes to Ms Sumati Kanwar, Principal of the host school, herself an international basketball player.

In the first match, Carmel Convent School, Sector 9, defeated GAV School, Solan, 32-10, with the halftime score being 26-06.

In the second match, Central School for Tibetan, Shimla, defeated Guru Teg Bahadur Public School, Sector 15, 18-8, with the halftime score being 16-03.

Kalsang Wan Gmo scored 12 points and Pema Youdon, Sonam and Chime Dolkar scored two points each for the winners. Gurpreet scored six points for the losers.

Sacred Heart School, Sector 26, got a walkover against Lawrence School, Sanawar.

In the last match of the day, Bhavan Vidyalaya, Sector 27, defeated Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36, 22-14. The halftime score was 15-08. Rajita Thakur was the highest scorer for the winners, while Ramneet scored eight and Prabhjot six points for the losers.

Inter-school karate: Varun of Government High School, Mani Majra, and Manpreet of Government High School, Behlana, got gold medals in the below-34 kg and 38 kg categories, respectively, in the UT Inter-School Karate Championship for under-17 boys organised by the Education Department here today at SPS-41.

Results: Varun (GHS, MM) 1, Harish (GHS-41) 2, Manoj (GMSSS-21) 3; below 38 kg — Manpreet (GHS, Behlana) 1, Parmod (GHS, MM) 2, Kanwar Nav Nihal Singh (St Joseph's-9) 3.

Below 42 kg — Manoj Rawat (GHS-41) 1, Panna Lal (GHS, Mauli Jagran) 2, Kamlesh (GHS-40) 3; below 46 kg — Vijay Prasad (GHS-41) 1, Jatinder (GHS, MM) 2, Anish Gupta (St Joseph'-9) 3.

Below 50 kg — Mandeep (GHS-40) 1, Kewal (GHS, MM) 2, Jasbir Singh (St Joseph'-9) 3.

Mandeep Kumar of GHS-40, Vijay Parsad of GHS-41 and Manoj Rawat of GHS-41 were adjudged the best fighters in their weight categories.

Golf tourney: The Sappers Cup Golf Tournament for men, women and juniors will be held at Shivalik Golf Course, Chandi Mandir, on November 14, according to Mr Gurdial Singh, Secretary of the club. Entries close with the club Secretary on November 12.

The tournament will be a team event and each team will comprise two players, selected by a draw out of the total entries received. The event will be open to men with a handicap of 18 and below, women with a handicap of 24 and below and juniors upto the age of 14 with a handicap of 24 and below.

The tournament will be played over 18 holes in all categories and the results will be declared based on stable-ford competition, considering full handicap.

The first prize will be given to the team scoring maximum points, based on individual score, women putting and women golfers. The tournament will be played in accordacne with rules approved by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrew's and the local rules approved by the tournament committee.

School soccer: Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, defeated Sanjay Public School, Sector 44, by a solitary goal today in the UT Inter-School Football Tournament for under-19 players held at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 22, here. The goal was scored by Amarinder Singh in the 10th minute of the match. However, the match was played amidst protests and quarrel between the two team officials and players.

Yoga championship: The four-day UT Open Yoga Championship will begin here tomorrow at Government Yoga Centre, Sector 23, according to Mr Subhash H. Tekchandani, Secretary of the Chandigarh Amateur Yoga association.

Softball meet: Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 10, and Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 33, defeated Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 27, 16-15, and Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 47, 10-7, respectivley, to reach the final of the UT Inter-School Softball Tournament being played here.

Shooting star of YPS

CHANDIGARH, Nov 10 — Gurparneet Singh Sekhon, a Class VII student of Yadvindra Public School, SAS Nagar, is the only boy of this region to secure gold medal in the .177 air rifle sub-junior men's event with a score of 308 out of 400 in the third All-India Kumar Surinder Singh Inter-School Shooting Championship which concluded on November 5 at Meerut. He broke the previous record of 294/400.

Gurparneet who took to this game only two years ago, is the son of a businessman who encouraged him to take up the game.

Gurparneet practices at the Sector 25 shooting range under the guidance of Col T.S. Dhillon. He had earlier bagged a bronze medal in the All-India G.V. Mavlankar National Shooting Championship held at Ahemedabad in the last week of October. He had won this medal in the sub-junior men's section by scoring 294 out of 400.

His father said Gurparneet was also good in studies and had secured 80 per cent marks in his previous class.

School cricket: St Stephen's School, Sector 45, in the under-14 and Shishu Niketan Senior Secondary School, Sector 22, in the under-16 section, scored convincing wins over DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, and DAV Public School, Sector 8, by 15 and 45 runs, respectively, today in the UT Inter-School Cricket Tournament organised by the Education Department here at St John's High School (under-14) and DAVSSS-8 (under-16). Government Model High School, Sector 36, defeated Government Model High School, Sector 44, by six wickets in another match of the under-14 section held at St John's-26.

Brief scores: (Under-14) St Stephen's-45 — 89 all out in 18.5 overs (Raj Angad 35, Vidit Khosla 13, Tanjit Singh 4 for 16, Gurkirat Singh 3 for 14, Rajneesh 2 for 16). DAVSSS-8 — 74 all out in 20 overs (Abhijeet 10, Vishu Arora 10, Amit 10, Sukrit 5 for nine).

GMHS-44 — 77 all out in 18.2 overs (Mukul 16, Ujjwal 17, Varinder 2 for three, Navtej 2 for three). GMHS-36 — 78 runs for four in 14 overs (Ramanpreet 18).
